JPJ Sarawak seizes 28 luxury vehicles this month, warns other owners to renew road tax and insurance
KUCHING (Aug 21): The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has seized 28 luxury vehicles of various makes and models in Sarawak under its Ops Kenderaan Mewah this month.
JPJ Sarawak said the seizures were made after the vehicles were found to have committed multiple offences, primarily involving expired road tax and the absence of valid insurance coverage, both of which are offences under the Road Transport Act 1987.
'This type of offence should not occur, especially involving vehicles that are symbols of status and luxury,' JPJ Sarawak stressed in a statement yesterday.
The department said it believes there are still luxury vehicles in the state being driven without renewed road tax and insurance coverage.
'Therefore, JPJ Sarawak urges all vehicle owners, especially luxury vehicle owners, to always ensure that their road tax and insurance coverage are renewed before using their vehicles on the road.
'JPJ Sarawak will not compromise with any violation of the law that could pose safety risks to other road users,' said the department.
Meanwhile, a woman accompanying her boyfriend to reclaim his luxury multipurpose vehicle (MPV) that had been seized earlier found the vehicle she was driving also failed a JPJ inspection.
Checks revealed that the Toyota Land Cruiser had no valid road tax or insurance, and it was subsequently seized on the spot at the JPJ Sarawak Complex here yesterday (Aug 20).
'The situation before JPJ enforcement officers was akin to 'surrendering', and more ironically, the woman had come to the JPJ Complex to send her boyfriend who intended to reclaim his Toyota Vellfire that had earlier been seized under the same operation,' said the department.
JPJ stressed that the incident underscored its commitment to continue Ops Kenderaan Mewah consistently to ensure full compliance with road traffic laws by luxury vehicle owners and drivers.
The department reminded the public to always ensure their road tax is renewed and insurance coverage is valid before using their vehicles.

JPJ seizes 38 luxury cars during crackdown on expired road tax and insurance in Butterworth
BUTTERWORTH: A total of 38 luxury cars have been seized by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in a crackdown on owners driving without valid road tax and insurance. JPJ director Zulkifly Ismail said those caught include businesspeople and VIPs with Datuk titles. "This operation has been carried out across the state of Penang since June (until Thursday, Aug 21). "The main objective is to curb the use of luxury vehicles without valid road tax and insurance," he said during a press conference at JPJ Seberang Jaya here on Thursday (Aug 21). He said action was taken under Section 23 of the Road Transport Act 1986 for road tax offences and under Section 90 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for insurance-related offences. He said in several cases, inspections also revealed that some of the drivers did not possess a valid driving licence. Zulkifly said the operation aims to prevent national revenue losses, as many luxury car owners attempt to evade paying road tax and insurance. He said most importantly, the operation seeks to ensure road safety. He said vehicles operating without valid road tax and insurance not only deprive the government of revenue but also pose serious risks to other road users, as any accident involving such vehicles could result in significant financial and safety repercussions. Among the luxury vehicles that were seized are Rolls Royce, BMW, Porsche and others. "Based on our records, the Rolls Royce stands out with the highest road tax rate which is RM54,000 a year," he said. He said this particular vehicle was taken action against for two offences, driving with an expired road tax and without valid insurance. Commenting further, Zulkifly said one of the most common excuses given by vehicle owners during inspections is that they "forgot" to renew their road tax. "If we look at the cases here, some vehicles have expired for six months, some for a year, and the longest one even dates back to 2023, that is two years overdue. BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Penang Road Transport Department has confiscated 38 luxury vehicles valued at over 10 million ringgit during its ongoing Ops Luxury enforcement campaign. Penang JPJ Director Zulkifli Ismail stated that the operation specifically targeted luxury vehicles operating without valid road tax and insurance coverage. 'The seized luxury vehicles include Rolls Royce, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Ferrari, all of which had no LKM and insurance for between six months and more than two years but were still used on the road.' Zulkifli revealed that a Rolls Royce valued at over three million ringgit had the highest outstanding road tax at 54,000 ringgit annually. 'The total amount of unpaid road tax for all the seized vehicles is RM77,400,' he said during a press conference at the Penang JPJ office here today.
