Slow US-China trade deal may push Trump's tariff deadlines; rare earth metal supplies may face disruption: Report
Trade deals between the US and China are moving at a pace slower than expected, which may lead to extensions of the current tariff deadlines, according to a report by SBI Funds Management.
The report highlighted deadlock amidst ongoing trade talks between both the nations with both sides showing limited progress in finalising a deal. The report points at a critical standby in global supply of rare earth metals which may get affected owing to China's domination in supplying 90% of the global capacity, reported ANI.
China's dominance over rare earth metals could prove detrimental for global automobile industry, especially electric vehicle production in the US, Europe, and India.
China on Tuesday responded to Trump administration's renewed tariff plans with warning of potential retaliatory measures.
Beijing also indicated that it may also take action against countries that align with Washington's efforts to marginalize China within global supply chains. The warning was published as a part of an official commentary in People's Daily. The article called the US tariff strategy, labeling it 'bullying,' and argued that 'dialogue and cooperation are the only correct path', reported by Reuters.

Newly laid bund road to ease traffic on two busy roads in Coimbatore
The newly laid bund road. Photo by P Sreedharan COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has opened a new road from Lanka Corner Railway bridge to the Vincent Road Junction to ease traffic congestion on the Big Bazaar Road and Vincent Road. The road is said to reduce at least 30% of the vehicle flow heading towards Bazaar Street up to Ukkadam. The road, laid on the bunds of Valankulam Lake, terminates a few metres away from the Ukkadam- Sungam bypass roundabout. The one-way stretch of 805 meters is open to two vehicles and cars proceeding towards from the Government Hospital Road. This initiative is part of the city corporation's traffic management plan to have better mobility within the city limits. According to a corporation officer, "The road is about seven meters wide and can handle cars as well. Except for heavy vehicles, the rest of the vehicles heading towards Ukkadam can use this route. The entire day, irrespective of peak hours, the Vincent Road remains congested as too many vehicles use this narrow road as an alternative to reach Ukkadam. Many people visit the eateries on this road, resulting in traffic. Also, it is the shortest route to reach Ukkadam flyover up ramp on the Sungam Bypass." The corporation is planning a similar alternative route along the Royal Theatre that will be connected to this newly laid bund road. The corporation official said, "To cater to the congestion caused by vehicles coming from the Goodshed Road that get through Vincent Road, a similar bund road has been planned along the Royal theatre. Goa's idol makers battle PoP threat ahead of festivities
Panaji: As Ganesh Chaturthi nears and concerns rise over market penetration of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols, the Goa Handicrafts Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (GHRSSIDC) has begun surveying markets to prevent the sale of PoP idols. Over the last four years, the number of registered traditional idol makers rose from 367 to 475, said GHRSSIDC managing director Damodar Morajkar. Despite the corporation's subsidy scheme, traditional idol makers struggle with rising costs, insufficient aid, and labour shortages. Morajkar said the survey to identify PoP idol sales began on Aug 8, and so far, GHRSSIDC's inspection has flagged none. He said that the inspection will continue until Aug 24. 'Local mud clay idols are the customer's first choice, due to our awareness campaigns. The Shadu Mati and coconut fibre idols from Maharashtra are also in demand, but not as much as the local clay ones,' Morajkar told TOI . GHRSSIDC offers a subsidy of Rs 250 per idol for up to 250 idols to the local idol makers. As of July 2025, GHRSSIDC received 367 local vendor applications for registration. The clay idols are heavier, with rich colours being another distinguishing feature. Umakant Poke, a third-generation sculptor from Morjim, Pernem, said that because certain vendors sell PoP idols, local sculptors catch negative attention from handicraft officials. 'They think we are selling PoP idols. We are hard-working people, and trying to earn money with our honest efforts,' Poke said. HC order paves way for disabled bank staffer's promotion after 5 yrs
1 2 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court has directed a public sector bank to give a physically disabled man working with the bank his promotion within 45 days, which was held back for nearly five years. It also directed the bank to give him a posting in Kolkata where he can have a support system. However, the division bench of justices Sujoy Paul and Smita Das De on Aug 14 directed that he would not get arrears of pay from the date of his restoration of promotion but his seniority and pay would be made on the basis of the post where he has been promoted. Anirban Pal joined the bank in 2005. In 2015, he met with an accident, resulting in 70% disability. In 2016, Pal did not participate in the promotion process (from Scale-III officer to Scale-IV) fearing transfer from Kolkata, but when he saw his two other colleagues with physical disabilities getting promoted without transfer, he applied. In Oct 2018, he was promoted but transferred to Patna.
