Blumenthal becomes bipolar charity ambassador
TV chef and restauranteur Heston Blumenthal said he was back in the kitchen and "thinking more clearly" as he takes on an ambassadorial role with a charity following his bipolar disorder diagnosis.
The 58-year-old said since he spoke publicly he had received thousands of messages from others living with the condition.
Blumenthal runs a number of award-winning restaurants, including the three Michelin starred The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire.
He has become an official ambassador for Bipolar UK, having been diagnosed with the condition in 2023.
According to Bipolar UK, the mental health condition is an episodic disorder characterised by sometimes extreme changes in mood and energy which has the highest risk of suicide of any mental health condition.
"I laughed out loud after receiving a message from a woman who told me that during a manic episode she thought the TV was talking to her," Blumenthal said.
"The reason I laughed out loud was because I experienced the same thing."
Famous for his experimental dishes such as snail porridge and bacon and egg ice cream, Blumenthal said medication initially dulled his culinary imagination.
He was diagnosed after being admitted to hospital in November 2023 and said he was now more involved with the The Fat Duck than for years.
"When I first came out of hospital the medications were so strong I was zombified - I had no energy at all," he said.
"As my medications have been changed and my levels of self-confidence and self-awareness have gone up I realise my imagination and creativity is still there.
"It was at levels that were so extreme before... looking back I can remember during my manic highs I was interrupting myself with ideas."
Bipolar UK estimates more than one million adults in the UK have bipolar disorder, about 30% more than the number of people with dementia.
But it is estimated at least 500,000 people are undiagnosed.
"It's an honour to have Heston onboard as an ambassador," Simon Kitchen, chief executive of Bipolar UK, said.
"We hope that his experience will encourage more people to seek help if they are struggling with their own diagnosis or are in the process of seeking one."

Michelin to remove access to health centers for retirees
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Starting next year some Michelin retirees will lose access to health centers they have been using for years. Michelin North America, which operates multiple manufacturing facilities and a corporate office in the Upstate, confirmed Monday that, beginning in 2026, Michelin Family Health Centers will only be available to active employees and their dependents. For years, Michelin has operated health clinics at certain facilities, offering primary care, urgent care, lab services, exams and preventative health programs. The clinics have historically been available to all employees, retirees and their dependents. 'We recognize that this change may impact retirees who have utilized these facilities, and we are dedicated to making this transition as smooth as possible,' said the company in a statement. 'Retirees will continue to have access to all other providers covered under their health plans, along with the additional benefits that reflect our core value of respect for people.' Retirees will continue to have access to Michelin Family Health Centers through January 1, 2026. The company said it recently informed 'eligible retirees' of the change. You can read the company's full statement below. 'At Michelin, we are committed to supporting our employees and their families. Recently, we informed eligible retirees that, effective January 1, 2026, the Michelin Family Health Centers — onsite medical facilities at select U.S. locations — will be available exclusively to active Michelin employees and their dependents.' 'We recognize that this change may impact retirees who have utilized these facilities, and we are dedicated to making this transition as smooth as possible. Retirees will continue to have access to all other providers covered under their health plans, along with the additional benefits that reflect our core value of respect for people.' Michelin-rated chef arrested on domestic violence charges at West Palm Beach home
A renowned chef and the owner of the lone Michelin-starred restaurant in West Palm Beach is facing domestic battery charges after police alleged he assaulted a woman during an incident at his home. Jacob Bickelhaupt, the chef and owner of Konro restaurant, is facing one count each of domestic battery causing bodily harm and domestic battery following his arrest June 2 by West Palm Beach police. According to his arrest report, Bickelhaupt repeatedly punched and kicked the woman, leaving her with two black eyes, and with swelling and bruising on her face. The woman reportedly went to Palm Beach International Airport after the attack to try to buy a flight to her family's home but suffered a seizure at the ticket counter. She received emergency care at St. Mary's Medical Center. During a hearing June 3 at the Palm Beach County Jail, Circuit Judge Daliah Weiss ruled that Bickelhaupt, 41, is indigent and assigned a public defender to represent him. She set his bail at $90,000 and ordered that he be placed on in-house arrest with an ankle monitor if he is released. As a matter of policy, the county Public Defender's Office does not comment on active cases. After his arrest, Bickelhaupt requested to speak to an attorney and did not make other statements to investigators, his arrest report said. In June 2017, Chicago police arrested him on charges that he assaulted a woman, throwing her to the ground and striking her in the head with a bottle, according to multiple published reports. He pleaded guilty to a charge of simple battery and was ordered to undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing, complete a domestic violence program and pay fines. Shortly after the Chicago arrest, Bickelhaupt closed 42 Grams, his popular restaurant on Chicago's north side that at one time also earned Michelin-star status. In 2023, he opened Konro in West Palm Beach, on Park Place off South Dixie Highway near the Norton Museum of Art. It is a menu-free tasting restaurant with 10 counter seats and a steep, three-figure per person price tag for admission. In 2024, the Michelin Guide announced it would be rating Palm Beach County's restaurants, and in April, Konro was awarded a single Michelin star, making it the county's first and only restaurant to carry a star from the vaunted guide. According to Bickelhaupt's arrest report, his current accuser told investigators that he repeatedly attacked her over the span of two hours, even as she tried to leave the home. Once the attack stopped, the woman packed a bag and called for a ride to PBIA, where she collapsed, the arrest report said. Officers detained Bickelhaupt that night and took him to police headquarters for questioning. Julius Whigham II is a criminal justice and public safety reporter for The Palm Beach Post.
