Will Smith drives home game-winner as Dodgers rally past Reds
Former Cincinnati closer Alexis Diaz (1-0) picked up his first win of the season and his first-ever with the Dodgers with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Alex Vesia picked up his fourth save in five chances with a scoreless ninth.
Cincinnati starter Nick Lodolo struck out a season-high 11 in 5 1/3 innings, reaching double-digit strikeouts for the first time since Apr. 29, 2024, when he also struck out 11 at San Diego. Most impressively, he fanned Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani three times in the first five innings.
The Cincinnati southpaw allowed six hits and two runs before being pulled after a Freddie Freeman sharp groundout to first.
Reds' reliever Graham Ashcraft then struck out Ohtani for the so-called "Golden Sombrero" in the seventh. It was the sixth four-strikeout game in Ohtani's career.
Ohtani narrowly escaped the indignity of five strikeouts when he flew out to right on a 2-2 count in the ninth, just prior to Smith's go-ahead double to left against reliever Emilio Pagan (2-3).
Coming off his first career complete game shutout last Wednesday in Washington, Lodolo threw 94 pitches and was in line for his fourth win in as many starts until the Dodgers' rally. He finished July with a 3-1 record and a 1.89 ERA in five starts.
Scott Barlow recorded the final two outs of the sixth, but Ashcraft couldn't protect a 4-2 lead in the seventh as Smith and Freddie Freeman produced two-out RBI singles.
Tommy Edman gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead against Lodolo in the second with his 12th homer of the season, an opposite field line drive that just cleared the wall down the right field line.
The Reds bounced back against Los Angeles starter Tyler Glasnow in the fourth on a two-run homer from Jake Fraley and a solo homer from Noelvi Marte for a 3-2 lead. Glasnow allowed four runs on four hits over four innings, walking five and striking out three.

Clayton Kershaw shines as Dodgers shut out Rays
August 2 - Freddie Freeman hit a solo homer and doubled in two runs, Clayton Kershaw tossed six shutout innings, and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers opened a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 5-0 win on Friday night. Clayton Kershaw (5-2) gave up five hits with no walks and struck out three for his 217th career win and first since June 26. Justin Wrobleski followed by allowing one hit with five strikeouts over three innings for his second career save. The Dodgers recorded their fourth shutout of the season -- and first since April 20 -- while improving to 4-3 on their nine-game road trip. Christopher Morel and Jonny DeLuca had two hits apiece for Tampa Bay, which has lost four straight games and 10 of 14 since the All-Star break. Los Angeles took a 2-0 lead against Shane Baz (8-8) in the first inning. Shohei Ohtani drew a one-out walk, moved to third on Will Smith's double, and both runners scored on Freeman's double to right field. The Dodgers tacked on two more in the fourth, when, with runners on the corners and one out, Alex Freeland singled in a run for his first career RBI. Tommy Edman then came across on Mookie Betts' sacrifice fly. Ohtani and Freeland each had two hits for Los Angeles, which entered Thursday's action with a three-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West. Freeman began the fifth inning with his 12th homer of the season, a 376-foot shot to right field. Freeman has homered in back-to-back games and reached base safely in 17 straight contests. Baz allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings and lost his fifth straight start. He walked two and struck out eight. The Rays put runners on the corners with two outs in the sixth inning, but Kershaw escaped unscathed after DeLuca flied out to center. Tampa Bay was shut out for the ninth time this season and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The Rays played without first baseman Jonathan Aranda, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist fracture suffered during Thursday's game against the New York Yankees. --Field Level Media

Dustin May now set to make Red Sox debut Wednesday
August 2 - Dustin May's Boston Red Sox debut will come Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals, three days later than originally planned. Manager Alex Cora told reporters Friday that the right-hander's first start for Boston was pushed back to ensure that Lucas Giolito did not go too long between starts. Giolito, who last pitched Tuesday in a win at Minnesota, will take the mound instead of May on Sunday in the series finale against the visiting Houston Astros. Brayan Bello will open the following home series against the Royals on Monday, Garrett Crochet will start Tuesday, and May will pitch the finale Wednesday, according to Cora. The Red Sox acquired the 27-year-old May from the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of Thursday's trade deadline in exchange for outfield prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard. May, who missed the 2024 season due to recovery from surgeries on his elbow and his esophagus, was 6-7 with a 4.85 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) for the Dodgers in 2025. He appeared in parts of five seasons for Los Angeles from 2019-23 and has already set career highs for appearances, starts, innings (104), strikeouts (97) and walks (43). His ERA is so far the highest of his career as well. --Field Level Media

NFL WAG reveals brutal reality of the league after her husband's shock release in wake of horrific neck injury
An NFL WAG has revealed the brutal reality of the league after her husband was released by his team during his recovery from a broken neck. It was revealed on Wednesday that the Cincinnati Bengals had cut running back Zack Moss, following an official announcement from the team. Moss, 27, was previously on the non-football injury list pertaining to a neck injury that cut his season short in 2024. Moss' wife, Jessica, had previously taken to social media to talk about 'one of the hardest weeks' after Moss returned to the Bengals' training camp. Then, after the running back was officially cut from the side, Jessica returned to TikTok to open up about the brutal decision. In a video posted on the platform, she said: 'I'm on my daily walk with my two kiddos after finding out that my husband was just released from his job. 'For those who don't know, my husband is a running back for the Bengals and I received a text from him this morning saying that he was just released by the team. 'This wasn't super surprising news to me because he is injured - he's recovering from a neck injury. For those who don't know, neck injuries are very severe, especially in the NFL. 'Obviously the team had their reasons for releasing him or whatever but 'lack of talent' isn't one of them. He's a great pass blocker, one of the reasons that Cincinnati wanted him. But anyway, I wasn't going to let that keep me in a bad space'. In a previous video that Jessica posted, she revealed that Zack had been suffering from 'scary symptoms' as a result of the injury. 'He is recovering from an injury from last season. He fractured his neck and he is not completely healthy yet. He has some scary symptoms and we are just rehabbing and doing everything [he] can to get healthy.' Last season, Moss signed a two-year contract worth $8million. He then re-structured his deal for a contract worth $1.7m in 2025. Cutting him leads to the Bengals eating a $1.88m dead cap penalty, but will net Cincinnati $1.2m in cap savings. Moss' return from injury coincided with an already-packed running back room at Paycor Stadium. Jessica, who wed Zack in October 2022, is often seen supporting her husband at training Moss' absence led to the rise of Chase Brown, a 2024 draft pick, as one of the best young running backs in the NFL. Add to that the selection of Texas Tech rusher Tahj Brooks in the sixth round of this year's draft and the re-signing of Samaje Perine, and the Bengals seemed chock full of running back options. According to The Athletic, Moss discussed retirement with Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. However, with three young children, Moss hoped to earn more NFL money before eventually calling it quits.
