10-year-old skim boarder catches waves and attention
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – 10-year-old Giorgio Tomasi ranked first in the semifinals of the Menehunes division at the Skim USA Tour's PCB Spring Break Jam 2025.
The third stop of the Skim USA Tour, was the PCB Spring Break Jam, held along the shores of Panama City Beach.
Among them was 10-year-old Giorgio Tomasi, better known as 'SkimGio,' who was quietly making waves of his own.
The Tomasi family traveled to Panama City from Naples, Florida, last Thursday in preparation for the event.
However, since age seven, the sport has been treated as more than just a hobby by young Tomasi, it has become a way of life.
Over time, lessons were learned, equipment was fine-tuned and techniques were developed.
'All you need is a good board. That's not like a wooden one, because those things can snap easy hitting big waves,' Tomasi said.
His goal for stop three of the tour was met Saturday when first place was earned in the Menehunes division semifinals.
The lead was secured through a difficult move rarely seen at his age level, 'the 540 big spin'.
'You're on your feet and you spin the board four times,' Tomasi said.
A score of 16.90 was awarded, placing him nearly a full point ahead of his closest competitor.
At just 7 years old, a sponsorship had already been signed with ZAP Skimboards, where his potential was recognized early on.
Like many young riders, a preference for water temperature and wave conditions has been formed through experience.
'They are still good waves. This is a bit cold for me, in Naples it is a bit warmer,' Tomasi said.
While larger waves are often preferred by more advanced skimboarders, the conditions in Panama City were described by Tomasi as ideal for his size.
'Probably just around the right height, just a little bit choppy,' he said.
After receiving the highest score in his age group Saturday, Tomasi is scheduled to compete in the Menehunes championship Sunday morning.

Local Special Olympics torch run marks 39 years
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Special Olympics athletes know most events have a start and finish. A torch run Friday started at Cobbs Hill Park. 'I know it's a little rain, but we got through it,' Special Olympic athlete Jacob Babcock said. At the run, Babcock reconnected with some of the members of local law enforcement who ran with him during the pandemic. 'So me, Erin, John 'Pre,' and all them and Brett Sobrieraski and Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter, we all came together, it was such an amazing process,' Babcock said. He's talking about Rochester Police Detective Erin Rogers. She helps with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. 'As soon as you see the athletes and see how excited they are to see you and how they're supportive of you, there's nothing better than that and you just want to support them back,' Rogers said. Cori Piels, also an athlete, will tell you that relationship means a lot. 'It's so nice to have the support of law enforcement. If we didn't have them, we wouldn't be doing this,' Piels said. The two groups have been doing the torch run together for 39 years. The event gives Chris Teich and everyone else a chance to celebrate all things Special Olympics. 'It embodies family, friendship, leadership and so much more,' athlete Chris Teich said. This year's course took them through Park Ave and all the way to Parcel 5 where they stopped running, making it look like this event is one of those that has a finish, but because of the bond between all of them, there's no end in sight. Fairmont cuts the ribbon on new pickleball courts
FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — Marion County residents now have a new way to have fun after the City of Fairmont cut the ribbon Friday for its new pickleball court at Windmill Park. The courts were previously used as basketball courts, which the city converted for $120,000. City officials said they're trying to provide opportunities to keep the community active and get in on the latest sports trends, all while keeping people in Fairmont.
