Reds place ace Greene on 15-day injured list and sign veteran left-hander Miley to 1-year contract

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds placed ace pitcher Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a right groin strain and signed veteran left-hander Wade Miley to a one-year contract.
Miley, 38, who had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in May 2024, gets a $2.5 million salary while in the major leagues and $300,000 while in the minors. He would earn a $15,000 performance bonus for each inning pitched from one through 100.
He signed a minor league contract with the Reds on Feb. 4 that included an opt-out clause if he didn't reach the big leagues by June 1. The 14-year veteran executed that clause on Sunday but remained in Cincinnati while he pursued potential deals with other clubs, and he stayed in touch with the Reds.
'I was able to spend some time with the family, just being a dad, going to Little League games,' Miley said. 'I'm appreciative of the Reds organization and the way they handled it. We always stayed in contact. I feel healthy. I'm really excited to be back. I'm ready to go to work.'
Miley is the third left-hander in the Reds rotation, joining Nick Lodolo and Andrew Abbott. He made 34 appearances including 32 starts for the Reds in 2020-21, going 12-10 with a 3.55 ERA. He tossed the 17th no-hitter in Reds franchise history, and his first, on May 7, 2021, at Cleveland.
Miley has posted 108 victories for eight different teams in his 14 seasons. Manager Terry Francona said Miley's veteran presence is a welcome addition for the Reds' young rotation.
'He and (Reds president of baseball operations) Nick (Krall) talked multiple times,' Francona said. 'I know how much he appreciated Nick's honesty. We were going to have him in the bullpen and then knowing at some point we would probably need him. Well, it happened a little quicker.'
Francona said Miley will be available out of the bullpen for Wednesday's series finale against the Brewers. If he's not used, he'll pitch the first game of the upcoming Cleveland series, then move into the rotation.
'He was in full (uniform) early this morning,' Francona said. 'It's really welcome. We've been waiting for him. He's a bright light. He brings a lot. His ability to compete, he won't shortchange you.'
It was another setback for Greene who made three starts since a 15-day stint on the injured list last month due to a groin strain he sustained May 7 during a start in Atlanta.
In Tuesday night's 4-2 win over the Brewers, Green threw 85 pitches before leaving the game after five innings when he felt discomfort in his groin. An MRI was scheduled for Wednesday morning, but Francona said there was no need to wait for the results.
'We talked to him, we talked to trainers, it was kind of an easy decision even without seeing the MRI,' Francona said. 'We've got to get him healthy.'

Anthony Richardson's latest injury shows why Colts brought in Daniel Jones

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts knew they had to prepare for something like this. Even though the team had no way of knowing Anthony Richardson's surgically repaired right shoulder would suddenly develop into a problem again this summer. But one of the lessons of Richardson's first two NFL seasons is that the possibility of injury cannot be ignored, and while everybody outside the building has spent most of their time debating the merits of an open competition based on the inconsistencies of Richardson's development, the reality is Richardson's injury history played a central, inescapable role in the team's decision to sign Daniel Jones. Indianapolis hasn't been trying to hide its motivation. 'The No. 1 thing we have to figure out, and what Anthony's got to work through, is staying healthy,' GM Chris Ballard said in January. 'He's got to be able to stay healthy. And that to me, is probably the biggest question right now, because now we're going on two seasons in a row where he's dealt with injuries.' Predicting a player's ability to stay healthy might be an NFL general manager's toughest task. For every player who can't shake the injury bug, there's an exception to the rule. Drew Brees couldn't get Miami's team doctors to clear his surgically repaired right shoulder after a devastating injury in San Diego; Brees signed with the Saints instead and didn't miss a game due to injury for the next nine seasons. Matthew Stafford played in just 13 of a possible 32 games in his first two seasons with Detroit, undergoing the same surgery to repair his AC joint that Richardson went through as a rookie, then played every game for the next eight seasons. The Colts could hope for a story like Brees or Stafford. Indianapolis had to prepare for the possibility that Richardson's injury issues would continue. 'We've got to have competition at the position, just for one, for the fact that competition makes everybody better,' Ballard said in January. 'And then two, he's not proven he can play 17 games.' The actual numbers are worse. Richardson has missed 17 of a possible 34 games in his first two seasons due to injury. Drafted with the No. 4 pick in 2023 to develop into the franchise quarterback the Colts desperately need, Richardson missed a game with a concussion as a rookie, suffered a sprained AC joint that cost him the rest of his rookie season, got knocked to the sideline for two more games by a Pittsburgh hit in October of 2024 and then missed the final two games of the season due to back spasms that stemmed from a disc issue discovered on an MRI. A midseason benching in 2024 somewhat complicates the numbers. But Richardson has never started more than five games in a row in the NFL. When Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen kept saying the team needed consistency at the position this offseason, most people thought about Richardson's accuracy issues. Consistency is also about having the same quarterback in the huddle for more than five games at a time. For all of the justifiable criticism about the Colts' decision to hand a raw prospect like Richardson the starting job right away, the injuries have arguably limited the young quarterback's development more than any other factor, and it goes beyond Richardson losing an entire offseason to rehabilitation after his rookie season. An NFL coaching staff typically needs half a season to learn a new quarterback, find what he does best and tailor the offense to his skill set. When Steichen was Philadelphia's offensive coordinator, the Eagles treaded water for the first half of the 2021 season, then made drastic, sweeping changes to the offense and set Jalen Hurts on a path to a Super Bowl. Philadelphia is far from the only team to go through that cycle. Green Bay's Jordan Love didn't hit his stride until midway through his first season as a starter. Houston's C.J. Stroud had to go through a rough October stretch as a rookie. Before Richardson arrived in Indianapolis, the post-Andrew Luck Colts often started slow with a new quarterback at the helm each year, then found a rhythm once the staff had time to learn the quarterback's tendencies and tailor the offense to his skill set. Injuries haven't given Steichen and the rest of the Colts offensive staff a chance to learn Richardson the same way. A surprising start to his rookie season was cut short by the sprained AC joint he suffered in 2023. Indianapolis spent too much time hunting the big play after Richardson's eye-popping highlights in the opener against Houston, but he was also knocked out of the Pittsburgh game just three weeks later, throwing the offensive picture into chaos for the rest of the season. The Colts headed into the offseason looking for something they could count on at quarterback. Anthony Richardson injury: Colts QB Anthony Richardson to miss mandatory minicamp due to injury to throwing shoulder ''I think it's the most consistent guy,' Steichen said at the beginning of the quarterback competition in April. 'At the end of the day, you've got to be able to move the football consistently up and down the field, and (be) making good decisions, you know what I mean? … You can have splash plays, but if you're doing that sparingly and up and down – I think it's got to be on a consistent basis, to get to where we want to go.' Availability is a key component of consistency, and it is still too early to know how Richardson's latest setback will affect him moving forward. The Colts have set no timetable for Richardson's return, although Steichen believes the quarterback will be back at some point in training camp. The possibility remains that this week's shoulder injury ends up being the final hurdle before Richardson puts his injury issues behind him. But Indianapolis can't bet on that happening.

Trent Alexander-Arnold told he's still nowhere near as good as 35-year-old RB

England manager Thomas Tuchel has been told that Kyle Walker remains a better all-round player than former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, as the Three Lions prepare to face Finland and Senegal over the next few days. Advertisement England has been blessed with top-quality right-backs in recent times, with Walker, 35, and Alexander-Arnold also facing competition from Chelsea's Reece James. Walker's club career took an unexpected turn this year, as he was sent to AC Milan on loan for the second half of the season — after reportedly being snubbed by Real Madrid — following a disappointing start to the campaign. Although Madrid wasn't keen on Walker, Alexander-Arnold has found a place on the Spanish team's roster. Liverpool acted quickly to replace him with Jeremie Frimpong, and the right-back's former Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz could also join the Reds. Former England winger Chris Waddle suggested that Walker should get the nod. "It's a really strange one," Waddle said of Walker's current career situation while speaking to "He's been in and out of the team at Milan. "It was a good move to go there, and when I watch him play he clearly has the pace to deal with the top-level stuff, but he's still been an inconsistent starter. Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among England's best right-backs "Now, that might be because he doesn't fit their tactics right now, or because they just played so many games, but even if it was a sensible move to make at the time, it hasn't quite gone as he'd have hoped. Advertisement "At the same time, it's hard to name a better English right-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold can be exceptional but he's not outstanding as a true defender. "He's got his talents, there's no denying it, with exceptional passing and dead-ball delivery, but if it's him or Walker, we're not blessed in that position for a young right-back who does what you expect. I think Kyle is the pick of the two right now, his all-round game puts him ahead of the rest." Alexander-Arnold's move from Liverpool to Real Madrid was confirmed at the end of May, with the Spanish club paying the Reds an $11 million transfer fee — despite the player's Liverpool contract being due to expire just a few weeks later. That's because Madrid wanted Alexander-Arnold to be part of Xabi Alonso's squad for the start of the Club World Cup, which gets under way in the middle of June. Madrid could have waited until July 1 to sign Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer, and he would have been eligible to play in Los Blancos' remaining games in the tournament, but the Spanish giant was keen for the player to have a period of integration in the weeks building up to the revamped event.

Who is Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal? Liverpool linked with teenager also wanted by Newcastle

Liverpool is reportedly interested in 19-year-old Rennes center-back Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, as the club continues to consider its defensive options ahead of next season. While Virgil van Dijk is staying put for another two years, there is uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future ahead of the expiration of his contract next year, while Joe Gomez is coming back from hamstring surgery and Jarell Quansah has just experienced a regressive campaign. Advertisement The Reds were interested in Dean Huijsen, but he plumped for Real Madrid, and a link has now emerged with another young defender in Ait Boudlal. Liverpool has already signed one defender in Jeremie Frimpong this summer, while Florian Wirtz could also be on the way. There is also interest in Ait Boudlal from other clubs in France as well as two clubs in Spain. Who is Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal? Given his young age and lack of top-level game time, most soccer fans are unlikely to have heard of him, but he is highly rated. In October last year, Ait Boudlal was named by English newspaper The Guardian as one of world's best 2006-born players. In February, he was sent on loan to French second tier side Amiens for the remainder of the campaign, and went on to make nine appearances, with eight of those coming as starts. Le360 Sport reports that Ait Boudlal is noted for "his ability to pass, his defensive intelligence, and a maturity rare for his age." Reds' transfer window state of play Boudlal is one of several players Liverpool is pursuing ahead of next season, with the club also working on deals for more high-profile targets in Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. Advertisement Wirtz recently decided that he wanted to join Liverpool ahead of Bayern Munich, and there is belief that a deal could be wrapped up before the summer's first transfer window closes on June 10 — even if it isn't, the window reopens less than a week later and runs until the beginning of September. Talks are also ongoing over Kerkez, who the club has identified as its preferred long-term successor to Andy Robertson, who will turn 32 next season. Robertson was asked about Liverpool's interest in Kerkez ahead of Scotland's friendly with Iceland on Friday and responded: "We're not daft, it looks as if a deal could potentially be done. "But, until that is done, I've not even given that a second thought. I back myself. I've got confidence in my own ability and that drives me forward."
