Investigation names over 95,000 Russians killed in Ukraine

Yahoo23-02-2025
The names of over 95,000 Russians who died fighting in Ukraine have been verified in a joint investigative project by the BBC's Russia service and the independent media outlet Mediazona, the BBC reported on Feb. 22.
Over 5,000 names have been added to the list of Russian casualties since Jan. 24. The project has been collecting data on losses since February 2022.
While the project confirmed over 95,000 deaths since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, the true death toll is believed to be much highter. Military analysts consulted by researchers estimated that the list likely represents only 45% to 65% of Russia's total casualties.
The current list includes 16,171 Russian convicts who were recruited from penal colonies to fight in Ukraine. The total number of convicts who have died on the front lines is likely much higher. Prisoners could account for a third of Russia's military losses since the full-scale invasion, researchers said.
Russia has been recruiting prisoners for the war in Ukraine since the summer of 2022.
Investigators verified the names of the dead using data from official reports, newspapers, social media, and graveyards.
Russia has not released official figures on its military deaths in Ukraine since September 2022, when the Kremlin claimed only 5,937 personnel had been killed in the war.
President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Feb. 15 that nearly 250,000 soldiers fighting for Russia's armed forces have been killed in the war against Ukraine.
Russian forces have suffered heavy losses in recent months amid Moscow's accelerating offensive in eastern Ukraine. Troop losses reached record levels in November and December, with casualties continuing to mount in 2025.
According to Ukraine's Khortytsia group of forces, Russia lost more soldiers fighting in the direction of Pokrovsk, a small city in Donetsk Oblast, than its total losses in the Second Chechen War.

Trump-Zelensky meeting: Live updates as European leaders convene at White House over Russia-Ukraine war

The Ukrainian president is being joined by key E.U. officials in his Oval Office discussions with Trump, who left his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin without a ceasefire deal. President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are scheduled to meet at the White House on Monday afternoon to discuss Russia's war in Ukraine. Zelensky, whose last trip to the Oval Office unraveled in spectacular fashion, will be joined by European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in his meeting with Trump. The sitdown comes three days after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, in a highly-watched summit that ended without a ceasefire deal. Trump has been trying for months to secure an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. He framed the Alaska talks as the first step in reaching a 'peace agreement' between Moscow and Kyiv. In a post on Truth Social Sunday, Trump said Zelensky 'can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.' The president suggested Ukraine must cede Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, and agree that Ukraine will never join NATO — two key demands made by Putin. Meanwhile, Russia continues to strike Ukraine. At least seven people, including a child, were killed in a Russian drone strike on an apartment complex in Kharkiv on Monday, Ukrainian officials said. Zelensky Hopes for a Less Fiery Oval Office Discussion

The last time President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine met with President Trump at the White House, it did not go well. In a remarkable blowup on Feb. 28, during what was to be a visit to coordinate a plan for peace, Mr. Trump and Vice President JD Vance berated Mr. Zelensky as the cameras rolled. This time, Mr. Zelensky is bringing reinforcements: At least seven European heads of state will join him in a show of unity against Russia. The group has helped coach Mr. Zelensky on how to better engage with Mr. Trump and met with the Ukrainian leader on Sunday to prepare. Mr. Zelensky's last meeting with Mr. Trump, intended to talk about a way out of the war and finalize a deal in which Ukraine would give the United States a share of its mineral revenue, was dramatically cut short after Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance took turns yelling at Mr. Zelensky. They accused him of being ungrateful for U.S. support and told him he was in no position to set terms of a peace deal. Mr. Trump told Mr. Zelensky, 'You don't have the cards right now.' 'I'm not playing cards,' Mr. Zelensky replied. 'I'm very serious, Mr. President. I'm the president in a war.' 'You're gambling with World War III,' Mr. Trump retorted. Mr. Vance jumped in and asked, 'Have you said 'thank you' once this entire meeting? No.' 'A lot of times,' Mr. Zelensky responded. 'Even today.' Mr. Zelensky ended up leaving the White House early and Mr. Trump suspended military aid to Ukraine a few days later. (President Trump later agreed to resume U.S. military assistance and the mineral deal was eventually signed.) Monday's meeting comes on the heels of Mr. Trump's summit on Friday with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, the first face-to-face meeting between the American and Russian leaders since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022. Mr. Zelensky was not invited. While the meeting ended inconclusively, Mr. Trump on Saturday backed Mr. Putin's plan for a direct peace agreement that would most likely have Ukraine cede territory to Russia. On Monday, Mr. Zelensky will meet first with Mr. Trump. Then they will be joined by the larger group for a working lunch and meeting. The group's goals, according to President Emmanuel Macron of France, are to show a united front between Europeans and Ukrainians and to defend the interests of Europeans. Mr. Macron and Mr. Zelensky will be joined by Germany's chancellor, Friedrich Merz; Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain; Giorgia Meloni, Italy's prime minister; NATO's secretary general, Mark Rutte; and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Union's executive arm.
