Court grants bail to CPF member accused of son's murder
The woman, a mother of four, appeared for a formal bail application on July 24, facing a single count of murder after allegedly stabbing her adult son to death on July 5 at their home in Alexandra.
The prosecution said that the incident followed an argument in the kitchen, sparked by the son's apparent intoxication. The dispute escalated, culminating in the fatal stabbing, witnessed by two of the accused's minor children.

Describing the charge as a schedule five offense, a serious crime requiring stringent bail scrutiny, the state acknowledged its gravity but did not oppose bail. 'There is no element of premeditation that the state is alleging,' the prosecutor said, emphasising that the act was not planned. The state further urged the court to balance the interests of justice with the needs of the accused's children, especially her infant.
The defence presented the accused's affidavit, which underscored her deep roots in Alexandra. In the affidavit, the accused revealed that Alexandra is not only her home, but her family's home, and her place of work as a CPF member. She further noted that she does not have any travel documents. It was on the basis of this affidavit that the defence assured the court that the accused posed no flight risk.
The defence further said the accused has no prior convictions, no pending cases, or protection orders. In the affidavit, the accused also committed to not interfering with the witnesses or the ongoing investigation should she be released on bail.

After a two-hour adjournment, the magistrate delivered her ruling. 'There is no evidence before this court that she may attempt to flee justice,' the magistrate stated, citing the accused's lack of travel documents and strong community ties. She also found no evidence suggesting the accused would commit further crimes, intimidate witnesses, or disturb public order.
Bail was set at R5 000, with conditions that, among others, the accused would report to the Alexandra Police Station once a week, be moved to an alternative home, and have no contact with witnesses, though she was allowed to reunite with her infant child. The case was postponed to August 13, for further investigation.
Alex News knows the identity of the accused, but has chosen to withhold it to protect the privacy of the minor witnesses involved.

Cop and prosecutor get bail in R1.6 million extortion case
The Pretoria court granted bail to a prosecutor and police officer accused of extorting R1.6 million from a businessman. A police constable and suspended prosecutor are out on bail after allegedly extorting R1.6 million from a detained businessman in exchange for his release. The Pretoria Magistrate's Court granted bail of R5 000 each to Advocate Avinash Ramapararat (45) and Constable Abdul Haig Shaik (37) on Wednesday on charges of extortion. Ramapararat is a suspended prosecutor who was based at the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Unit (SCCU). Shaik is a police officer stationed at Wierdabrug Police Station. Extorting R1.6 million from detained businessman Shaik is accused of contacting a businessman in February 2024 and asking him to come to the Wierdabrug Police Station in relation to a theft and fraud case that Agynt Commodities had opened. The case related to a coal transaction between the two companies in 2023. ALSO READ: Crime Intelligence CFO, co-accused granted bail in burglary cover-up Shaik detained the businessman upon arrival and put him in a holding cell. 'While in custody, the two accused allegedly demanded a payment of R1.6 million in exchange for the businessman's release,' National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said. 'The complainant paid the money and was later released.' Incident reported to Hawks Mahanjana said that after following up on the case at the police station many months later, the complainant was told that the case number he had been issued had nothing to do with his issue. The businessman then reported the incident to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), which led to the arrest of both accused on 25 July 2025. In addition to the current matter, the pair also faces separate charges of extortion and corruption in a case before the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court. Cases postponed to October The Pretoria Magistrate's Court postponed the matter to 24 October 2025 for the Director of Public Prosecutions' decision, while the separate matter will return to court on 27 October 2025 for disclosure. 'The NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to combating corruption, including within its ranks. Advocate Ramapararat was placed on suspension pending finalisation of internal disciplinary processes,' Mahanjana said.

Sigh of relief as murder accused in Fose case is released
Scores of community members of Durban Deep, Roodepoort and anti-GBV organisations came out in their numbers to support the grieving family of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, who was mutilated and killed in the area. Image: Itumeleng English / Independent Newspapers The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has announced that it has withdrawn charges against Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi in the murder case of 14-year-old Likhona Fose. The withdrawal of charges comes two weeks after Mnisi was released on bail of R5,000 after the Roodepoort Magistrates Court learned that the evidence of the State heavily relied on a report given by a community member, who had stated that Mnisi was the last person to be seen with the teenager. Mnisi, who was on parole at the time of the incident, was linked to the case through a single witness who later became uncooperative, as there was no forensic or additional evidence tying him to the crime, with the court finding the State's case too weak to proceed. On 2 July, Mnisi's girlfriend, Pinky Gantso, testified at his bail hearing to provide an alibi for the day Fose disappeared. Gantso detailed Mnisi's movements on 31 May 2025, painting a picture of a man following his normal routine, with Gantso saying Mnisi had visited her in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, on the same day that Fose disappeared, and on his return, proceeded to travel to Dobsonville, Soweto. Mnisi told members of the media outside court that he was relieved that the court had found in his favour. "I am so happy that the charges have been dropped against me, I was innocent all along because I was not involved in this," he said. The teen's mutilated body was discovered in an open field in Durban Deep, west of Johannesburg, on June 1, following her disappearance on May 31. Mnisi was charged with the murder and during his application to be released on bail, Mnisi raised an alibi that he did not know the deceased and that his phone records would prove that he was in Daveyton on 31 May 2025, the day Fose went missing. In a statement on Wednesday, NPA spokesperson Phindile Mjonondwane stated that subsequent to Mnisi's bail hearing, the NPA had given instructions to the investigating officer to probe his alibi, and indeed, his phone was linked to a tower in Daveyton. "Furthermore, there were more statements obtained from other witnesses that confirmed that Minisi could not have been the last person to be seen with the deceased. The decision to withdraw charges is therefore fair and responsible under these circumstances. "The investigation continues to unearth what transpired on the day Fose was brutally killed. At this stage, we urge community members to work with us in our attempts to find justice for the affected family.

WATCH: Charges dropped against Mnisi in Likhona Fose murder case
14-year-old Likhona Fose's mutilated body was discovered in a veld near her Durban Deep home in June 2025. Mduduzi Mnisi walked out of the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court a free man on Wednesday after the state withdrew murder charges against him in the killing of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, a former pupil at Ikusasalethu Secondary School. The case, which had gripped the West Johannesburg community since Fose's death, took a dramatic turn after prosecutors received new information that cast doubt on Mnisi's involvement in the crime. WATCH: 'New information came to light' A presiding magistrate confirmed that the withdrawal of charges followed the emergence of crucial evidence that was not available during Mnisi's bail application. 'There was new information which came to the fore,' said the magistrate. 'When the state received that particular information, subsequent to the bail application, the state decided to withdraw the charges against the accused. A certificate authorising the withdrawal was issued by the senior public prosecutor.' Mduduzi Mnisi at Roodepoort Magistrate's'Court, West of Johannesburg, 30 July 2025.
