ALOR STAR: The Rural and Regional Development Ministry has allocated RM360.36 million this year to implement 77 rural entrepreneurship programmes nationwide, targeting 27,300 beneficiaries.
Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang said the allocation would be channelled to 10 agencies under the ministry, including the Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda).
"Of the total, Keda is receiving RM4.4 million to run six components under its entrepreneurship development programme across Kedah.
"These include incentives to enhance skilled entrepreneurs, padi field development, rural agriculture projects, and training in skills and organisational management.
"Our aim is not just to produce new entrepreneurs, but also to support their growth through knowledge-sharing, market access and physical facilities such as business premises," she told a press conference at the Keda Entrepreneurs Gathering 2025 here today.
Also present was Keda chairman Datuk Seri Jamil Khir.
Rubiah said since its establishment in 1981, Keda had received RM2.3 billion for comprehensive development efforts across Kedah, covering infrastructure, the economy, human capital and agriculture.
Among its achievements are the construction of 262km of rural roads, the development of 62 new housing settlements, and the provision of 492 business lots to support local entrepreneurs.
"In terms of human capital, Keda has trained over 34,000 participants through 891 short-term courses. Keda College, established in 1989, has produced over 8,400 graduates, with an employability rate of 96.7 per cent.
"Keda does not operate in isolation. We encourage collaboration between ministry agencies to fast-track development efforts. Our goal is not only to produce entrepreneurs, but to shape them into sustainable industry players ready to compete globally," she said.
Rubiah also highlighted key challenges faced by rural entrepreneurs, including a lack of capital, proper business premises, market networks and technical know-how.
These, she said, must be tackled holistically by the government and relevant agencies.
She expressed hope that Keda's 44th anniversary celebration would spark a new wave of growth in the rural entrepreneurship ecosystem, creating more economic and employment opportunities for the people of Kedah.
The event also marked the debut of the Keda Entrepreneur Awards 2025, in conjunction with the agency's anniversary, to honour outstanding entrepreneurs nurtured under its programmes.

Rubiah (fourth right) during the on-site briefing. – Ukas photo KUCHING (June 6): Construction of the multi-purpose hall at the Sarawak branch of the Institute for Rural Advancement (Infra) is currently at 60 per cent completion, which is significantly behind its target of 83 per cent. According to the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the RM5.68 million project is being closely monitored following the delay, with efforts underway to ensure it is delivered according to schedule. Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Rubiah Wang, visited the site recently to assess the situation and receive an on-site briefing from project stakeholders. Implemented by Mindagang Resources Sdn Bhd and supervised by the Special Project Team 2 of the Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia, the project, which started on December 20, 2023, was initially expected to be completed by August 19 this year. But with just over a year remaining before the new targeted completion date, Rubiah said her ministry is expected to intensify monitoring efforts to address any further delays and bring the project back on track. 'We want every sen spent to bring direct benefit to the people, not just building structures, but creating inclusive and conducive spaces for rural community development,' she said. Among the key facilities being built under the project are a main hall, badminton court, male and female prayer rooms, changing areas, an AV room, lobby, stage, switch room, accessible toilets, and ablution areas. Rubiah said the site visit demonstrated the ministry's commitment to ensuring rural infrastructure projects proceed according to standards and deliver value to local communities. Selangor Aero Park to advance Malaysia's regional air cargo hub ambitions
SEPANG: The development of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will strengthen Malaysia's ambition to become a leading air cargo hub in ASEAN, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 square kilometres and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other ASEAN country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the ASEAN market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the ASEAN region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership. 'We also aim to attract investments from aerospace supply chain industries, which includes the production of aerospace components, related technologies, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services,' he said. He expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft MRO operations at KLIA. To support this vision, he said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia is currently reviewing KLIA's air traffic control system to address the anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo flight traffic. 'We anticipate a significant increase in air traffic at KLIA, involving both passenger and cargo aircraft. A comprehensive redesign of the air traffic control system is currently underway to enhance operational efficiency and optimise traffic management,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke added that an announcement on the KLIA Aerotrain project will be made soon.
