U.S. men's swimming rankings going into 2025 Toyota National Championships

The new Olympic quad could usher in a new era for U.S. men's swimming.
Bobby Finke is the lone individual Olympic men's gold medalist entered so far in next week's Toyota U.S. Championships, the meet that determines the team for the World Championships in July and August in Singapore.

Three other Olympic champions — Caeleb Dressel, Chase Kalisz and Ryan Murphy — were not on the initial entry list.
Dressel has raced in one meet since Paris and Kalisz strictly in November 2024 trials, according to USA Swimming's database. Murphy said he is taking a break from competition in 2025 with an eye on coming back later in the quad for a 2028 Olympic bid.
At nationals, the top two finishers per event — plus up to the top six in the 100m and 200m freestyles for relay purposes — make the team for worlds, should they meet a minimum qualifying time and the total roster not exceed 26 swimmers per gender.
Shaine Casas, who placed ninth in the 200m individual medley in his Olympic debut in Paris, goes into nationals with the country's best time in 2025 in the 50m and 100m backstroke and 50m and 100m butterfly, plus the 200m IM.

The U.S. Championships determine the team for this summer's World Championships in Singapore.
The last time somebody won five events at one spring or summer nationals was at the 2008 Olympic Trials (Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff). Granted, the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly, two events that debut at the Olympics in 2028, haven't always been held at national meets.
Carson Foster, the Olympic 400m IM bronze medalist, has the top U.S. time in 2025 in the 400m IM, plus in the 200m and 400m freestyles.
Then there's Finke, a three-time Olympic gold medalist in the distance freestyles who again tops the seeds in the 800m and 1500m.

Pregnant wife of former Knicks first rounder Danilo Gallinari speaks for first time since surviving shark bite

Italian sports journalist and wife of former New York Knicks first-round pick Eleonora Boi spoke publicly for the first time after being attacked by a shark in Puerto Rico. Boi, who was bitten on the thigh by a shark, recounted the experience during an appearance on "Good Morning America" on Thursday. Boi, who is pregnant, is expected to make a full recovery. She is due to deliver the couple's next child — which was not affected by the attack — in November. Despite that outcome, Boi said the experience left her "traumatized." Boi said she was wading out in waist deep water with the couple's two children when she felt a strong pain and burning on her thigh. She originally thought she had been stung by a large jellyfish but eventually realized she had been bitten by a shark. Boi said she started screaming for help. Gallinari, who was on the beach with one of the couple's daughter, ran out to help his wife. The couple was able to get everyone to safety, where a woman helped put pressure on Boi's thigh as they waited for help to arrive. Boi and Gallinari never got that woman's name, but thanked her during the appearance, per GMA. "She was an angel. Danilo was with me, and she helped so much. I would like to say thank you to this woman, because I don't know her name, and I just want to say thank you to her, because she helped a lot," said Boi. Doctors ran hours of test on Boi to ensure her baby was OK. Once that was determined, doctors performed an operation on Boi. She still makes weekly visits to the doctor, and is expected to make a full recovery. Gallinari is currently a member of Vaqueros de Bayamón, a team that plays in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional in Puerto Rico. Prior to joining them, Gallinari spent 16 seasons in the NBA. Gallinari, who is from Italy, began his NBA career with the Knicks, who selected him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. His selection was loudly booed by Knicks fans at the event. Gallinari recovered from that to deliver two-and-a-half solid seasons in New York before he was traded to the Denver Nuggets. Gallinari played for six other NBA teams during his career.

Trump's debanking order could create headaches for banks, sources say

By Nupur Anand, Pete Schroeder and Saeed Azhar NEW YORK (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order requiring banks not to discriminate against clients on political or religious grounds could create uncertainty and administrative headaches for the industry, sources said. Trump signed an executive order on Thursday directing the Treasury Department and bank regulators to ensure lenders do not have policies in place that deny services to customers based on political or religious beliefs, a practice known as "debanking." Any wrongdoing uncovered could result in fines, disciplinary measures, and even referrals to the Justice Department. The order came days after Trump accused JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America last week of debanking him, and alleged that lenders discriminate against conservatives. Large banks have denied rejecting clients on political grounds, and instead blamed unclear rules for some of the account closures. Banks have earlier said that certain decisions to close accounts were based on rules around reputational risk, a criterion that has been banned by Trump's order. The order also gave regulators about 180 days to conduct their review. While some lenders welcomed the order for its potential to streamline processes, they also expressed concerns about how onerous it could be to comply with the order. The scope and zeal with which regulators carry out Trump's directions are still unclear and causing some trepidation, experts and industry officials said. "There are words in the executive order which can be open to interpretation," said Matt Bisanz, a partner at Mayer Brown. "We will have to see what meaning the regulators attach to it, and what is the scope of the activities that they focus on." "It's not even clear if there will be regulations or just guidance, which will be enforced through the bank exam process or will be handled in a quiet, non-public manner," Bisanz added. Trump's criticism echoed longstanding debanking complaints from Republicans, who have accused Wall Street banks of "woke capitalism," in denying services to gunmakers, fossil-fuel companies and others perceived to be aligned with the political right. "Fair access to financial services is a fundamental principle of the U.S. banking system," said Jonathan Gould, the Comptroller of the Currency, in a statement in response to the new order. "It is unacceptable for banks to discriminate against any customer on the basis of political or religious beliefs or lawful business activities." The OCC, which oversees national banks, is currently reviewing banks for improper policies and will take remedial actions "as appropriate." Spokespeople for the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation declined to comment on how they plan to implement the order. Industry executives say there are many questions about the executive order that may only be clarified if regulators publish rules on debanking, said three sources who declined to be identified because the discussions are private. It is too early to tell how onerous it will be to comply with the order given the lack of details so far, another industry source said. Banks could also face myriad challenges if they are forced to review and potentially renew client relationships over debanking, said Stephen Gannon, partner at Davis Wright Tremaine. Reinstating or modifying arrangements, as the order suggests, would require banks to analyze large volumes of data on client activities and products, he said. Regulators are unlikely to hand out penalties for any historic account closures, but they could be asked to disclose reasons for past debanking, two sources said. Now that the order has been announced, banks could face regulatory penalties if debanking guidelines are not properly implemented, said Ed Mills, an analyst at Raymond James, a financial services firm.
