FC Seoul to release veteran midfielder Ki Sung-yueng
"We have decided to pause our relationship with Ki Sung-yueng, our franchise star and eternal captain," FC Seoul said in a statement. "After confirming that he is no longer part of our club's plans, Ki Sung-yueng asked to be moved to another club where he can play more and have a meaningful end to his career. We decided to accept that."
The K League 1 club insisted that they will not cut ties with Ki forever and said they will organize a retirement ceremony for the 36-year-old when he calls it a career.
"We both agreed that the team will do its best to support his pursuit of a new career in coaching after his playing days are over," the club added. "We will reserve our utmost respect for Ki that he deserves as a legend for FC Seoul and ensure that he will be respected by many others."
Ki made his professional debut with FC Seoul in 2006, and played for them until 2009 before leaving for Celtic in Scotland. It began an 11-year career in Europe for Ki, who later played for Swansea City, Sunderland, Newcastle United and Mallorca before rejoining FC Seoul in 2020.
Ki had been losing his playing time since new head coach Kim Gi-dong took over in 2024.
Ki has only played in eight out of 20 matches this season, even though he has resumed training after suffering a hamstring injury.
Ki is believed to be nearing a move to Pohang Steelers. FC Seoul and Pohang will square off Sunday at Seoul World Cup Stadium. (Yonhap)

KBO's new check-swing challenge system to take effect this week
Beginning Tuesday, teams in South Korean baseball will be able to ask for video reviews on check-swing calls. The Korea Baseball Organization said the check-swing challenge system will take effect across the league Tuesday, about a month after the league's executive committee, made up of general managers of the 10 clubs, reached the decision to implement the new rule. The KBO had initially planned to introduce the check-swing challenge at the start of the 2026 season, after testing it out in this year's Futures League, the KBO's minor league. However, several managers have been calling for a prompt implementation of this system, citing the need for accurate and transparent calls. If the end of the bat crosses a line parallel to the front side of the home plate, it will be ruled a swing. The batting team can only challenge a swing call, and the pitching team can only ask for a review of a no-swing call. Teams will each have two opportunities to ask for a video review on check-swing calls, and they will be awarded another opportunity in extra innings. If teams are successful in overturning the original call, then they will retain their challenge. The KBO said its own cameras, not broadcast feeds, will be used for reviews. Bunt attempts cannot be challenged. Only managers will be allowed to ask for challenges and they must do so within 30 seconds of the call -- within 10 seconds if the original call ended an inning or the game. However, if a pitch has already been thrown within those time limits, then managers will not be allowed to ask for a review. The KBO said it tested the system by reviewing close check-swing calls from recent games and that it expects the new rule to enhance accuracy and transparency on the field. If video replays do not turn up clear evidence to overturn the original call within three minutes, then the ruling on the field will stand. If an overturned decision results in a strikeout on an uncaught third strike, then the batter will be ruled out without a tag on him or a throw to first base. According to the KBO, the US minor leagues have the same rule on the dropped third strike. However, if the ball not caught for a third strike goes out of play, then the batter and all the other runners aboard will each be allowed to take a base. (Yonhap)

Son Heung-min draws penalty for LAFC in MLS debut
Son Heung-min marked his Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) debut with a strong performance as a second-half substitute in an away match, drawing a key penalty that led to his team's equalizer. Son came off the bench in the 61st minute to replace David Martinez for his first Major League Soccer (MLS) match against Chicago Fire FC at SeatGeek Stadium Bridgeview, Illinois, on Saturday (local time), as LAFC fought back for a 2-2 draw. Some 10 minutes after firing a weak left-footed shot from outside the box in the 67th minute, Son made his presence felt, with LAFC trailing 2-1. He was sent on a counterbreak after Brian Gutierrez hit the left goal post at the other end, and was brought down by a hard challenge from Carlos Teran. Referee Ricardo Montero let the play continue first, but after a call down from the video assistant referee, Montero reviewed the play and awarded LAFC a penalty. Denis Bouanga converted the ensuing spot kick to level the score. Son had a right-footed shot blocked by Chicago's Jonathan Dean during stoppage time as the teams ended in a stalemate. Son said afterward he was "a bit disappointed" with not coming away with a victory but he felt everyone "put in a lot of effort." "Happy I made my debut and I hope the goals come soon," he said. "It was a decent 30 minutes in my legs, so getting ready for next week. We'll see how I progress with the training sessions and with the players and we'll see if next week I can start the game and make a big impact." LAFC will next play New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (local time), or 8:30 a.m. Sunday in South Korea. Son was unveiled as the newest member of LAFC on Wednesday, after ending his 10-year tenure with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. The 33-year-old was greeted by South Korean fans waving their national flags and also several Tottenham fans in Son's old Spurs shirt. (Yonhap)

California dreaming: Son Heung-min wants to go down as legend for LAFC
Having just completed a decadelong career in England as a veritable legend for his former club, South Korean football star Son Heung-min says he now wants to go down as a legend for his new club too. Son was unveiled as the newest member of Los Angeles Football Club in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Major League Soccer club said they had acquired Sonny, as he is widely known, on a permanent transfer from Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League through 2027 with an option for 2028 and an additional option through June 2029. Son ended his 10-year Spurs tenure as the fifth-best scorer in club history with 173 goals in 454 matches in all competitions. He won the Premier League Golden Boot as its top goal scorer for the 2021-2022 season, and only three months ago, he captained Tottenham to the UEFA Europa League title and ended the North London club's 17-year trophy drought. Now 33, Son said he will embrace new challenges that lie ahead. "There is no guarantee that I will play well here, just because I had success in Europe. I am getting a fresh start, and my dream is to finish my time here as a legend," Son said at his introductory press conference at BMO Stadium. "Many people in the ownership group put in so much work to bring me here. I always want to give back what I receive, and that's just the way I've lived my life. When the time comes to leave the club, I want to be called a legend on my way out." Son revealed that LAFC "was not my first choice" as his next destination after his 2024-2025 Premier League season ended, with his status for the next season -- the final one of his contract -- in doubt. But a conversation with John Thorrington, LAFC's co-president and general manager, "changed my heart and my brain." With a massive Korean community in Los Angeles already welcoming him with open arms, Son said he wants to bring joy to his Korean fans. "Obviously, as a Korean athlete, I feel very fortunate to be able to have a career in a foreign country, and my objective is to make Korean fans here proud," Son said. "That was a major factor for me in choosing to come here." Son said he got an early glimpse of LAFC's passionate fan base when he attended the club's Leagues Cup match against Tigres UANL at BMO Stadium on Tuesday. Son drew a thunderous ovation when he was shown on the video board with the message "Welcome Son Heung-min" above the words "LAFC Forward." "Yesterday, I was at the game, watching you guys supporting (the team) like crazy. I just wanted to run onto the pitch and show my performance," Son said of his new team's supporters. "I'm here to win, and I will perform, and I will definitely show you some exciting football, and we definitely will have success. In football, you will have ups and downs, but for sure, I can guarantee that I will give everything when I wear this shirt, and I will make them proud." Though he struggled to recapture the magic from his Golden Boot season in the ensuing years, Son said he still has "good legs and good quality." "Obviously, I'm here to perform, but also, I want to give some advice to young players for their improvement," Son added. "I can't wait to see all the teammates." One of those teammates is former Tottenham goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris, who played with Son for nine seasons before joining LAFC in 2024. Son said conversations with the French keeper did play a role in his decision to come to Los Angeles but also cracked, "He's back to being my captain, so I have to say something good about him." The playing calendars in Europe and MLS are different. Tottenham just played a preseason match in Seoul on Sunday for Son's final match and will kick off their new season next week. The MLS regular season, though, kicked off in February. Son will have to jump onto a moving train, but he dispelled any concerns about his fitness. "I just had a good preseason, and I don't think people should worry about my physical condition," he said. "We have some paperwork to take care of. And I am here to play football, not do anything else. My goal is to put on a good show for our fans as soon as possible. I can't wait for the day when I get to meet them at our stadium." (Yonhap)
