Sikh faith not a ground for less punishment: Indian-origin man jailed for crash that killed woman in Adelaide, he was driving at 160 km/hour
24-year-old Bhupinder Singh has been sentenced to more than five years in jail, but not a life sentence, for causing the death of Christine Sandford, a 40-year-old mother of two, in a high-speed crash in Adelaide.
The accident took place in 2023 but the verdict was delayed as Singh pleaded for a home detention instead of jail as he said practising Sikhs face religious hardship in custody, including ridicule, dietary challenges and an inability to maintain their hair.
Singh, however, pleaded guilty to causing death and expressed remorse.
District Court judge Paul Muscat said the accident was caused by Singh's rash driving as the speed of the Ford Mustang that he was driving was 160kph 2.5 seconds before he crashed into Sandford.
Sandford was in her car at a nearby petrol station just 500 meters away when Singh's car struck hers with such force that it pushed the vehicle 30 meters down the road. She died at the scene.
"You were tailgating and flashing your high beams...you were swerving around other cars at high speed. The risk that you posed to other persons driving at the speed at which you did must have been obvious to you," the judge told Singh. "Christine Sandford's death was totally avoidable if only you had obeyed the speed limit," Judge Muscat said.

"The crazy speed at which you were driving the Ford Mustang left you with no chance of avoiding crashing into her car.
"There is a road safety message that is often repeated to motorists, for good reason, it reminds us all 'speed kills', sadly that is precisely what happened here."
'There are no winners'
Father of Sandford said there are no winners in the case as his daughter would never come back. Sandford was preparing a meal at that time and went to get cooking oil when the speeding car of Singh's killed her.

Bizarre jailbreak: How French prisoner escaped in released cellmate's laundry bag; went unnoticed for 24 hours
AI-generated representative image A 20-year-old inmate, Elyazid A, nicknamed "the Joker" or "the Equaliser", chose a unique way to escape from a French prison- concealed in fellow inmate's laundry bag, who was being released. The inmate serving several sentences escaped by hiding in the luggage of his inmate who complete his sentence, the Prison Service said in a statement to AFP. He "took advantage of the liberation of his fellow inmate to hide himself in his luggage and get out," the statement said. However, the authorities re-apprehended him later in a village cellar last week, approximately 25km from Lyon-Corbas prison, according to Guardian News. The prison staff failed to notice his absence for 24 hours. Reports indicate he escaped by hiding in a large plastic laundry bag filled with clothes, which his released cellmate transported out on a trolley on Friday. The police continue their search for the accomplice cellmate. Multiple investigations have been launched by Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, Lyon prosecutors, the French prison service and Lyon-Corbas facility to examine the escape circumstances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo The national prison service head, Sébastien Cauwel, confirmed that Elyazid A, despite facing charges including criminal association and conspiracy to murder, was not considered a security threat. Cauwel described the escape method as exceptionally uncommon, attributing its success to significant internal failures. The incident raised questions about systemic issues within the facility, primarily stemming from staff-related shortcomings rather than infrastructure problems. The severe overcrowding exacerbates these challenges for prison officers. Lyon-Corbas prison currently houses almost 1,220 inmates despite its 678-person capacity. A May report by the Lyon bar association urged immediate action to address overcrowding and maintain basic human rights. The French prison system accommodates 85,000 inmates in facilities designed for under 63,000 people. Cauwel noted that vacant cells are immediately filled, potentially contributing to oversight failures. According to a 2024 Council of Europe assessment, French prisons rank third in EU overcrowding rates, behind Cyprus and Romania. The country has witnessed numerous dramatic escapes, including about 20 helicopter breakouts since the 1980s, reported The Guardian. The prison service faces a shortage of at least 5,000 officers. Recent incidents include armed attacks on prison facilities, with 21 arrests in April following assaults, including gunfire at Toulon prison's entrance. Drug cartels have targeted prison facilities, damaging officers' housing and burning vehicles, responding to increased government enforcement and stricter regulations for imprisoned crime leaders.

The Case The complainant, Soni's mother, claimed that her son broke open the lock and took over the flat while she was away attending court. According to her, he shouted abuses from inside the flat when she returned with her daughter. Delhi Police informed the court that a previous order had granted possession of the flat to the complainant. They also said there had been several police complaints and calls against Soni, including preventive legal action in the past. Live Events Soni's lawyer argued that the case was not one of illegal possession. He claimed that his client had been given the property willingly under a verbal agreement. He also showed family photos taken in the flat, suggesting they were already living there before 10 July. He questioned why no legal steps like eviction or contempt were taken if the possession was truly illegal. The prosecution disagreed, saying Soni had planned in advance to take over the flat unlawfully. They argued that even if the mother wasn't living there, she still legally possessed the property. The investigating officer said no CCTV footage or video evidence had been found to prove whether Soni broke in. After reviewing the facts, the court said it was inclined to grant bail to Nitin Soni.
