'That was my mistake': Rohit Sharma's childhood coach shares how he discovered the batter inside future India captain
NEW DELHI: India's ODI captain
Rohit Sharma
's journey to becoming one of modern cricket's most destructive openers almost took a very different path. His childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, has revealed that he first spotted Rohit not with a bat in hand, but as a promising off-spinner — and only discovered his batting talent by chance, much later.

Speaking on a YouTube podcast with Gaurav Manglani, Lad recalled: 'I first saw him as a bowler, he was about 12 years old. I saw him playing a match against us. Then I told his uncle (Chacha) to get him admitted to my school. The school started in 1995, and I saw Rohit in 1999. He took admission that year. In the first year, he was in under 14. During practice, I kept making him bowl.
Next year, Rohit went to 8th standard and was 14 years old.

What do you think was the key factor in Rohit Sharma's success as a cricketer?
Natural talent
Coaching and guidance
Hard work and determination
Opportunities to showcase skills
The turning point came unexpectedly. 'One day, while entering the school, I saw a boy knocking (batting). From outside, I saw the bat was coming very straight and good. I didn't know it was Rohit at first. When I went inside, I asked him if he was batting. He said yes, sir. Then I gave him some batting in the nets at number six or seven. Before that, I had never given him batting practice.

That was my mistake,' Lad admitted.
Rohit soon proved his worth with the bat. 'He batted well. In a match, he went in at number seven and scored 40 runs — a very good 40. The way he was batting, I felt he had a very good talent for batting. A thought came to my mind: it would be good to make him open. He was very happy when I asked, and scored 140 runs as an opener. That's when I knew he should focus more on batting.'
The rest, as they say, is history — with Rohit Sharma going on to become one of the finest opening batters of his era, famed for his elegance, timing, and unmatched pull shot.

‘I don't think the quality was as good as '05': Michael Atherton on Anderson-Tendulkar when compared to 2005 Ashes
The recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar trophy ended up in a 2-2 draw. There were many nerve-wracking moments through the series, and also a few heartwarming ones. However, as far as the quality of cricket goes, former England cricketer Michael Atherton said he preferred the 2005 Ashes, which is touted as the best Test series in the modern era, over the 2025 England vs India one. 'I don't think the quality was as good as '05. I don't think I've seen a better series than the '05 Ashes. It was a great team on the decline and the emerging team, absolutely great players at the top of their game,' Atherton said while speaking on Sky Sports. 'But it was probably the best series since '05. The 2023 Ashes was fantastic, but I'll put this series as the best series since '05 because of those dramatic moments, like Woakes and like Rishabh Pant,' Atherton added. Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin said this one is better than the 2025 England-Australia showdown. 'A lot of people are comparing this series with the 2005 Ashes, but I think this series was slightly better than even the 2005 Ashes – because there was so much more imperfection, from both sides,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat. 'If you look at that Australian team, there was Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, you had Michael Kasprowicz, Shaun Tait. From this side [England] you had Simon Jones, Steve Harmison, you had Ashley Giles. There was a lot of experience in the bowling attacks. There was experience in the batting too. There was a lot of hard-fought cricket, where you couldn't see a lot of mistakes. It was hard-fought.' While Ashwin did acknowledge this as a good series, he also mentioned it was an imperfect series. 'In this series, there were a lot of mistakes,' Ashwin added. 'But the young players have corrected their mistakes and gotten better through the series. You had somebody like KL Rahul who's not put a foot wrong in the series. Then you had somebody like a Rishabh Pant or Shubman Gill, who made errors – both got run out once – they played some poor shots and got out at the crucial moments.'
