Suspected smugglers nabbed, 300 protected animals seized at KLIA
SEPANG: Exotic and protected animals worth RM460,000 were seized while two suspected wildlife traffickers were arrested at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) earlier this week.
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said the bust was made at Terminal 1 on Wednesday (May 21).
"Checks at around 6.30am led to the discovery of over 300 protected animals hidden in the suspects' bags," it said in a statement on Friday (May 23).
Among the species found were the blue iguana; red-eared slider turtle; Savannah, Nile and black-throated monitor lizards; and the common spotted cuscus, a marsupial.
"The two suspects failed to produce any documents, permits, or letters authorising the export of these animals.
"The animals have been seized for further action.

The charge, under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, provides a maximum fine of RM1mil or imprisonment for up to three years upon conviction. Judge Mohamad Kamil set bail at RM6,000 with one surety for the three local men, while bail for Mar Thang, who is a Myanmar national, was set at RM8,000 with one surety. They were also ordered to surrender their passports to the court, report at the Negeri Sembilan office of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry once a month and not intimidate witnesses. The court set July 2 for mention. It said this was the highest number of Not-To-Land (NTL) cases recorded since the establishment of the monitoring force in 2023, adding that it had ordered the immediate deportation of all of them. 'There is an increasing trend of foreigners entering illegally, particularly during peak arrival times and holiday seasons in Malaysia,' it said in a statement today. The AKPS also said that the congestion and high flow of visitors would often be manipulated by a small group of individuals to try and sneak into the country by abusing existing entry facilities. It added that deportation measures are part of ongoing efforts to tighten border security control, thus ensuring only eligible individuals who fulfil all stipulated conditions are allowed to enter Malaysia. 'All the individuals involved were ordered to return to their countries of origin immediately after the documentation processes and further inspections carried out by AKPS officers,' it said. Since its establishment, the AKPS has had a positive impact in increasing the effectiveness of early screening as well as the detection of at-risk visitors. Airport staff fined for 'Superman' antics on highway
KUALA LUMPUR: An airport cargo worker who performed a dangerous "Superman stunt" while riding his motorcycle on a highway was fined RM1,200 by the magistrate's court today. Nik Muhammad Nasrun Rohazir, 24, pleaded guilty to reckless riding by lying chest-down on his motorcycle seat with his legs extended behind him — an act that could cause harm to other road users. He committed the offence at 3.45am on Feb 9 along the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway. Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhammad Dan ordered him to serve a month in jail if he failed to pay the fine. The charge, framed under Section 279 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum six-month jail term, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa urged the court to impose a proportionate sentence, citing public safety concerns. In mitigation, National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Mohammad Sufi Mohammad Sukor pleaded for a lenient sentence, as the accused was a first-time offender.
