Austrian school shooter deemed mentally unfit for military service

Qatar Tribune12-06-2025
Vienna: The gunman who killed 10 people and took his own life in an Austrian school shooting this week was found to be mentally unfit for military service in 2021, a spokesman for the Austrian Armed Forces said on Thursday.
Michael Bauer confirmed this in a post on X, saying the Austrian armed forces are not permitted to pass on information from medical examinations to third parties.
On Tuesday, a 21-year-old man opened fire at his former school using a pistol and a shotgun. He shot and killed nine teenagers aged between 14 and 17, as well as a teacher, before dying by suicide.
According to the police, the man had held a gun licence since earlier this year. To obtain the licence - required to purchase a pistol - the man had to pass a psychological test, which police confirmed he did. (DPA)

NATO sends two fighter jets after Russian weapons approach Romania

BerlincTypeface:> NATO scrambled two German Eurofighter jets in response to Russian airstrikes near Ukraine's border with Romania overnight into Wednesday. The jets were activated after Russian weapons systems approached Romanian airspace. Ultimately they did not cross into what is also NATO airspace. The jets, which took off from the Romanian military airbase Mihail Kogalniceanu near Constanta, returned without incident. This marked the first alert of a new mission there. The German Air Force is participating in armed patrol flights to secure the NATO alliance's south-eastern flank. The operation involves five Eurofighters and approximately 170 soldiers, providing military capabilities that Romania does not sufficiently possess on its own. The German fighter jets are part of a quick reaction alert unit stationed on-site, ready to deploy around the clock. (DPA)

Three dead in Russian rocket attack on Ukrainian city near front line

Kiev: At least three people were killed in a Russian attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostiantynivka, authorities said on Wednesday. Prosecutors in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk said four people were also injured in the attack on a residential area with a market. The Russian military reportedly used Smerch (Whirlwind) rocket launchers. The front line in eastern Ukraine lies just a few kilometres away from the industrial city, which had a population of over 70,000 before the Russian invasion in February 2022. Only 8,000 residents are believed to remain in Kostiantynivka. Earlier, the public prosecutor's office in the north-eastern region of Sumy said more than a dozen people, including several children, were injured in night-time Russian drone attacks. Shortly after midnight, 15 drones struck a residential neighbourhood in the town of Okhtyrka. (DPA)

Dortmund's Couto suffers minor knee injury after harsh foul in Cup match

dpa Dusseldorf Borussia Dortmund right back Yan Couto has suffered a minor knee injury after a harsh foul in the German Cup match against Rot-Weiss Essen, according to information obtained by dpa on Tuesday. Couto was left with a painful bruise after being hit by Essen's Kelsey Owusu in the final minutes of Monday's match, won by Dortmund 1-0. The club feared he could have suffered a serious injury after he had to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher. But after further medical checks, he could be available for the Bundesliga opener at St Pauli Hamburg on Saturday. Coach Niko Kovac was furious with the incident, telling broadcaster ARD: 'I have to be honest: that's not how you play. I don't want to accuse him of intent, but that's negligence. It's basically an assault. 'I hope it's not too serious. He's in a lot of pain, and we'll have to wait for the results of the examination, but I'm still hopeful that it's just a very bad bruise.' Owusu received only a yellow card for the violent tackle. A correction to a red card by the video assistant referee (VAR) was not possible because the VAR is not available in the first and second rounds of the German Cup. 'It is unforgivable when a player tackles so hard,' Essen coach Uwe Koschinat said. Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl spoke of 'a clear red card.' After finishing his comments in the mixed zone, Kehl turned back to the journalists and added with a serious expression that it was 'a brutal foul.' Owusu apologized to Couto after the game, but has deactivated his Instagram account after receiving hate messages, Essen told dpa on Tuesday. The move was agreed with the third division club. Essen also disabled the comment function on Instagram due to insults and racist comments. 'What happened on social media after the game crosses every line. Kelsey Owusu is part of our team and our club. He made a mistake in this situation, but he is not an unfair player, nor should he be the target of hate speech,' Essen said in a statement. The 'racist hostility' on social media is 'absolutely unacceptable,' the statement continued.
