Austrian school shooter deemed mentally unfit for military service

Vienna: The gunman who killed 10 people and took his own life in an Austrian school shooting this week was found to be mentally unfit for military service in 2021, a spokesman for the Austrian Armed Forces said on Thursday. Michael Bauer confirmed this in a post on X, saying the Austrian armed forces are not permitted to pass on information from medical examinations to third parties. On Tuesday, a 21-year-old man opened fire at his former school using a pistol and a shotgun. He shot and killed nine teenagers aged between 14 and 17, as well as a teacher, before dying by suicide. According to the police, the man had held a gun licence since earlier this year. To obtain the licence - required to purchase a pistol - the man had to pass a psychological test, which police confirmed he did. (DPA)

Trump should know: You shouldn't tear someone down to make yourself look bigger

On May 21, we again witnessed our president attack another country's president. This time it was the leader of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa ('Trump pushes false white genocide claims,' May 22). Just as he did in February with Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he surrounded himself with people he knows are too afraid to be the adult in the room. In a premeditated and deliberate move, he attacked a man who only wanted a peaceful discussion on trade and economic investment. I find this bullying reprehensible. If your child acted like this, you would punish or at the very least correct the bad behavior, not reward and applaud it. I do not believe in tearing down others to make yourself look bigger. That is certainly not the way to "make America great again." Michael Bauer, Hartland Letters: We should commend MPS superintendent for creative plan to reduce office staff Letters: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is wrong about autism destroying families. Each has value. Opinion: My kids shouldn't have to navigate race in sports. Let them play and be free.
