‘Deeply shocking': Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier dies in climbing accident in Pakistan; had wished to remain in mountains
Laura Dahlmeier,31, the double Olympic biathlon champion from Germany, has died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan, her management confirmed on Wednesday.
She was fatally struck by a sudden rockfall as she was scaling the mountain with her climbing partner Marina Eva, who then called emergency services for help, reports the BBC.
The incident occurred around noon on Monday, near the 5,700-metre (18,700 feet) mark of Laila Peak in the Hushe Valley, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, reports the Guardian. She had been in the region since the end of June and successfully climbed the Great Trango Tower before the accident.
'Laura Dahlmeier died on 28 July in a mountain accident on Laila Peak (6,069 meters) in Pakistan's Karakoram range,' her representatives were quoted as saying by German newspaper Die Welt.
'A recovery operation was launched but ultimately called off on the evening of 29 July.'
Dahlmeier reportedly died instantly while her mountaineering partner was unharmed and stayed at the site. Adverse weather conditions have so far hindered rescue helicopters from accessing the area.
'It was Laura Dahlmeier's express and written will that in a case like this, no one should risk their life to recover her,' said her representatives, reported the Guardian.

'It was her wish to leave her body behind on the mountain in this case. This is also in line with the wishes of her relatives.'
Kristy Coventry, the president of the International Olympic Committee, said that Dahlmeier's death is "deeply shocking for all of us in the Olympic movement".
'Laura made history at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics as the first female biathlete to win sprint and pursuit gold at the same Games edition.
She will be remembered forever,' added Coventry, reports the Guardian.
Born in the Bavarian ski town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Dahlmeier retired from biathlon in 2019, at the age of 25, after making history as the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and pursuit events at a single Olympics. She earned two gold medals and a bronze at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Dahlmeier was an"ambassador for our country around the world and a role model for peaceful, joyful and fair coexistence across borders", said German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

A police report filed by the Port of Seattle Police Department detailed that the two athletes were seen on security footage getting into a 'heated' verbal argument shortly after passing through airport security on 27 July. The incident quickly escalated beyond words. Surveillance video shows Richardson repeatedly approaching Coleman as he appeared to try walking away. The 25-year-old allegedly pushed him hard enough to send him into a column. Even after that, Coleman continued to walk, but she reportedly kept bumping into him before pushing him again this time forcefully enough to send him 'flying a few feet away,' according to the report. Coleman returned toward the security checkpoint seeking help, but Richardson continued to follow him and allegedly threw a pair of headphones, striking him. Though police ultimately found probable cause to arrest Richardson on a charge of domestic violence assault, Coleman reportedly refused to cooperate with the investigation. The report noted that he 'declined to be a victim.' Richardson was taken into custody and booked into the South Correctional Entity Jail. She remained there until her release on Monday afternoon. Hailee Steinfeld's latest workout photos break the internet as Josh Allen returns to Bills camp
Hailee Steinfeld raises eyebrows with sizzling new gym photos (Getty Images) While Josh Allen ramps up intensity in his second week of training camp with the Buffalo Bills, his wife Hailee Steinfeld is quietly building her own routine — one rooted not in football, but in fitness, mindfulness, and discipline. The Oscar-nominated actress, who stunned fans in three elegant gowns during their wedding weekend at the picturesque San Ysidro Ranch, has been making wellness a personal priority off the red carpet. Hailee Steinfeld flexes her fitness grind in latest photos before Bills' big year Even with a demanding schedule, Hailee Steinfeld remains deeply committed to taking care of her body and mind. In her recent Beau Society newsletter, she described emerging from a whirlwind trip to New York City, yet still ensuring her workouts weren't sacrificed. 'I work out to stay fit, but it's almost the last reason I do it anymore,' she wrote candidly. 'I love it because it's the only time of day that I can check out entirely. ' Her approach isn't simply about staying camera-ready — it's about emotional resilience and self-care. The 28-year-old actress, who starred in Sinners, emphasized the mental clarity her workouts provide. 'We often work out early so we finish before the rush of the day sets in. Her commitment has been supported, both emotionally and physically, by her father Pete Steinfeld — a personal trainer and a key figure in her health journey. In Beau Society's August 1 issue, titled 'The Movement Issue,' Pete was interviewed, offering insight into their shared passion. Hailee wrote, 'I never get tired of hearing my dad talk about the thing he loves most in this world: wellbeing.' Hailee Steinfeld embraces balance by letting go of guilt and finding joy in her wellness journey The actress also opened up about her past struggles with body image and the guilt that used to accompany indulging in snacks with friends. That mindset has shifted with wisdom and time. 'I don't do that anymore because I enjoy sweets and snacks, and the company,' she admitted. But a quote from her father helped anchor this change: 'You can't change your body overnight, and you can't mess it up overnight either.' That philosophy — one of balance, consistency, and kindness toward oneself — now defines her outlook. As Josh Allen pursues greatness on the gridiron, Steinfeld is quietly setting her own example of strength: one that doesn't always show up on a scoreboard, but matters just as much. Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid prepare to anchor Team Canada's 2026 Olympic hockey squad (Getty Images) As NHL players prepare to return to Olympic action in 2026, Canada's focus sharpens with Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid leading the charge. The pair headline a star-studded roster of 92 athletes invited to Hockey Canada's National Teams Orientation Camp in Calgary from August 26 to 28. With redemption on their minds after a shocking defeat to Denmark at the 2025 IIHF World Championships, Team Canada is gearing up to reclaim hockey supremacy on the global stage. Team Canada's 2026 Olympic hopes rest on Crosby and McDavid's leadership The orientation camp marks a key kickoff for Canada's Olympic preparations, bringing together elite athletes from the men's, women's, and para hockey teams for a three-day, off-ice experience. With activities ranging from presentations and team-building to high-performance meetings, the event is designed to set the tone for a winning season. 'We are excited to unveil the 92 athletes who will kick off the road to Italy,' shared Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada's senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations. 'While the next several months will bring intense evaluation and difficult roster decisions, we look forward to… start to become one team as we set our sights on February.' Among the most notable names for the men's team are Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, Brad Marchand, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, and Robert Thomas. The roster also includes all 24 players from Canada's victorious 4 Nations Face-Off team, including goaltenders Jordan Binnington, Adin Hill, and Sam Montembeault. The women's side is no less formidable. Marie-Philip Poulin, Sarah Fillier, and Natalie Spooner will be joined by 17 players from the 2022 gold medal-winning team in Beijing. Notably, young stars like Caitlin Kraemer and goaltenders Eve Gascon and Kayle Osborne, all under 23, will bring youthful energy and fresh fire to the squad. A shot at redemption after shocking Denmark defeat For all the accolades, Canada enters this Olympic cycle with something to prove. Just months ago, the national team was handed a shocking quarterfinals exit at the 2025 IIHF World Championships by Denmark, courtesy of Nick Olesen's last-minute goal.
