As NHL players prepare to return to Olympic action in 2026, Canada's focus sharpens with Sidney Crosby and
Connor McDavid
leading the charge. The pair headline a star-studded roster of 92 athletes invited to Hockey Canada's National Teams Orientation Camp in Calgary from August 26 to 28.
With redemption on their minds after a shocking defeat to Denmark at the 2025 IIHF World Championships, Team Canada is gearing up to reclaim hockey supremacy on the global stage.
Team Canada's 2026 Olympic hopes rest on Crosby and McDavid's leadership
The orientation camp marks a key kickoff for Canada's Olympic preparations, bringing together elite athletes from the men's, women's, and para hockey teams for a three-day, off-ice experience. With activities ranging from presentations and team-building to high-performance meetings, the event is designed to set the tone for a winning season.
'We are excited to unveil the 92 athletes who will kick off the road to Italy,' shared Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada's senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations. 'While the next several months will bring intense evaluation and difficult roster decisions, we look forward to… start to become one team as we set our sights on February.'
Among the most notable names for the men's team are Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, Brad Marchand, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, and Robert Thomas.
The roster also includes all 24 players from Canada's victorious 4 Nations Face-Off team, including goaltenders Jordan Binnington, Adin Hill, and Sam Montembeault.
The women's side is no less formidable. Marie-Philip Poulin, Sarah Fillier, and Natalie Spooner will be joined by 17 players from the 2022 gold medal-winning team in Beijing. Notably, young stars like Caitlin Kraemer and goaltenders Eve Gascon and Kayle Osborne, all under 23, will bring youthful energy and fresh fire to the squad.
A shot at redemption after shocking Denmark defeat
For all the accolades, Canada enters this Olympic cycle with something to prove. Just months ago, the national team was handed a shocking quarterfinals exit at the 2025 IIHF World Championships by Denmark, courtesy of Nick Olesen's last-minute goal. That bitter taste lingers—and fuels their drive.
With NHL players finally returning to Olympic ice for the first time since 2014, Canada's powerhouse lineup signals a fierce intent to reclaim gold. This isn't just a comeback story—it's a mission of redemption. And with Crosby and McDavid steering the ship, the world will be watching.

One star now pocketing more in a single season than a full championship team did a decade ago says a lot about how NBA finances have escalated, with one player alone rewriting what we expect from contracts today. Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander secures record‑breaking contract paying more than 2013‑14 Spurs payroll On July 8, Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander, reigning NBA MVP and Finals MVP, signed a four‑year supermax extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The deal averages about $68.1 million per year, making it the highest annual salary in NBA history. — RTNBA (@RTNBA) By contrast, the entire San Antonio Spurs active roster in the 2013–14 championship season made roughly $63.5 million combined. Essentially, one season's pay for Gilgeous‑Alexander now surpasses the total earned by an entire title‑winning Spurs team. How salary cap growth and superstar status created this historic pay gap This big difference in pay is because of the rising NBA salary cap. In 2013–14, the cap was $58.68 million. In 2025, it had grown to over $140 million. This jump is mostly due to new TV deals and the 2023 agreement between players and the league. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's new deal is huge. In the 2025-26 season, he will make around $38.3 million. In 2026-27, it goes up to $40.8 million. By 2029-30, it could be more than $70 million. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo On average, he will earn about $68 million per year. That's the highest yearly pay for any NBA player. Shai is only 26 years old. He had a great year before signing this contract. He won the MVP, was the top scorer, and won the Finals MVP too. He helped the Oklahoma City Thunder win their first NBA title since 2008. The San Antonio Spurs in 2013–14 was very different. That team had legends like Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. They all played together with a team-first mindset. Their total team salary was only $63.5 million that year. Still, they won the championship. It shows how fast the NBA has changed. Shai's contract shows how much top players are worth today. It's a big sign of how far the league's money has grown.
