Brazil successfully defended their Women's Copa America crown by defeating Colombia 5-4 in a shoot-out on Saturday to claim their ninth continental title after a roller-coaster final in Quito ended 4-4.
The decider at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado saw Colombia take the lead three times, only for Brazil to respond on each occasion.
Linda Caicedo gave Colombia the lead in the 25th minute before Angelina equalised from the spot just before halftime.
Tarciane's own goal put Colombia back in front in the 69th minute before Amanda Gutierres levelled the game again in the 80th minute.
Mayra Ramirez restored Colombia's lead two minutes from time, only for Brazil great Marta to equalise deep into stoppage time and then score again in extra time.
Colombia's Leicy Santos then made it 4-4 with a stunning free kick to force a penalty shoot-out.
The penalty shoot-out mirrored the drama of the match, with Colombia taking the early advantage after Angelina's miss.
However, when Manuela Pavi failed to convert and goalkeeper Lorena saved Leicy Santos' effort Brazil held the advantage.
Marta had the chance to seal victory, but Katherine Tapia's save sent the shoot-out to sudden death, where Carabali's miss finally handed Brazil their ninth continental title. (Reuters)

The Dane, who also eliminated Polish second seed Iga Swiatek in the fourth round, is one win from her second WTA 1000 final, having lost the first in February at Dubai to Mirra Andreeva. She dominated Keys in the first set, breaking in the fourth and sixth games, and Keys double faulted away another break to begin the second set. Tauson held from there to win, never facing a break point in the second set before holding at love in the last game to end matters after 70 minutes. Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, and 18-year-old Canadian sensation Victoria Mboko will meet in Wednesday's other semi-final on the Montreal hardcourts in the US Open tuneup. Rybakina won their only prior meeting 6-3, 7-5 last month in the second round at Washington. (AFP)

File photo: Reuters Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from this week's start of the ATP Cincinnati Masters, with the pullout coming a year to the day from his Paris Olympic gold medal victory. Tournament officials confirmed the news to The Athletic, meaning the 38-year-old Serb will have played no matches between his Wimbledon semi-final loss to Jannik Sinner and the US Open start in three weeks. World number one Sinner, who like Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz skipped the current ATP Toronto Masters in order to rest and recover from Wimbledon, has been in Cincinnati since the weekend. Sinner and his team posted a golf course selfie to social media on Monday, one day after an opening practice session at the pre-US Open event. Djokovic, winner of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, first played Cincinnati in 2005 and won the last of his three titles there in 2023 after losing five previous finals. (AFP)

The US second seed finished off a complete matched set of Masters 1000 quarter-finals as the last piece of the puzzle fell into place in Canada. The late-night marathon lasted 39 games without a break of serve, with 15 aggregate break points going begging. Fritz delivered two aces in the final-set tiebreaker on his way to the narrow win, moving into the last eight as Lehecka drove long. "Making all the Masters quarters is really cool," Fritz said. "It shows consistency. "Today I had to accept that parts of my game were just not there. I was bailed out by a lot of first serves, but I was making too many mistakes." Fellow American Ben Shelton earned a second chance after Flavio Cobillo failed to serve out their match, with the fourth seed finally securing a somewhat contentious 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/1) win. The winner, who now plays Alex de Minaur, earned his 100th ATP-level win after nearly two and a half hours, firing an ace on his second match point to wrap up a place in the last eight for a third straight tournament after Wimbledon and Washington. De Minaur pushed his ATP winning streak to seven matches as he fended off Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. The Australian won the Washington title on Sunday before plunging into the chaotic schedule at Toronto, where play began on the weekend and will continue through Thursday.
