Google Maps to have 'black spots' to alert commuters in accident-prone areas

Delhi Traffic Police
will mark '
black spots
' on accident-prone areas to alert commuters as they approach the region, the officials said on Saturday.
In an effort to enhance
road safety
in the national capital, the Delhi Traffic Police announced that it will mark all identified black spots on
Google Maps
, which will provide
real-time alerts
to commuters as they approach accident-prone areas, officials said.
The feature, if launched in 2025, will initially showcase locations from the finalised list of black spots for the year 2024 because the annual list is compiled at the end of each year.
A black spot is a central point where repeated accidents have occurred within a 500-metre radius on both sides. "If a particular stretch sees frequent accidents, the midpoint of that stretch is categorised as a black spot," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Headquarters) Shive Keshari Singh told PTI.
In 2024, a total of 111 black spots were identified, recording 1,132 accidents, including 483 fatalities and 649 non-fatal crashes, according to officials.
"We are tying up with Google, and internal procedures are in progress," Singh mentioned. "If and when it goes live this year, the map will carry the 2024 black spots first. The idea is to give timely information so commuters stay alert, their drive becomes easier and safer and reduce the number of fatalities."
Here is a list of top accident-prone areas of Delhi:
Azadpur Sabzi Mandi on GT Karnal Road recorded the highest number of accidents in 2024. The region witnessed 20 accidents, which included 11 fatal cases. Akshardham Mandir on NH-24 saw 19 accidents, with eight of them fatal.Bhalswa Chowk on Outer Ring Road also recorded 19, out of which six were listed as fatal.ISBT Kashmere Gate recorded 17 accidents, with eight marked as fatal.SGT Nagar recorded 18 accidents, with seven categorised as fatal. Libaspur Bus Stand witnessed 18 crashes, including six fatal ones.Anand Vihar ISBT and Rajokari Flyover each recorded 16 accidents.Near Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Dwarka, 12 accidents were recorded, seven of them fatal.Wazirabad logged 15 accidents, nine of which were fatal.
According to the data, the top 10 black spots for accidents in 2024 accounted for a total of 180 incidents. Several corridors had multiple high-risk locations, with Outer Ring Road reporting at least 17 black spots, Ring Road having 13, and GT Karnal Road featuring 10 such spots. Other roads, such as NH-8, Rohtak Road, and Najafgarh Road, also had several black spots.
The Delhi Police has identified and marked 25 new black spots as of July 2025, which collectively experienced 176 accidents, including 88 that were classified as fatal. Busy corridors such as Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, and GT Karnal Road remain prominent sites, while ISBT Kashmere Gate, SGT Nagar, and Hanuman Mandir in Bawana have been flagged as repeat locations.
"There can be many reasons a black spot forms, from missing or faded signage, worn zebra crossings, to poor road condition," a senior official told PTI. "We deploy personnel at these stretches and work with road agencies to fix the engineering issues, and now we are adding a tech layer through Google Maps."
The planning for this initiative is ongoing, including marking the black spot locations and coordinating with road-owning agencies to improve signage, road designs, and strategic deployment of personnel. The goal is to make Delhi's roads safer and more secure, the DCP added.
Top 10 black spots from 2024 and 2025 show a few overlaps like ISBT Kashmere Gate, SGT Nagar, and Libaspur Bus Stand appearing among the highest-risk locations for two consecutive years. Hanuman Mandir, which recorded 19 accidents in 2024, is included in the list again this year, with 10 incidents already listed.
On the other hand, Swaroop Nagar features on the 2025 list but was not part of the top accident-prone locations last year. Akshardham Mandir and Wazirabad, both of which had high numbers in 2024, are currently absent from the 2025 top 10.

FASTag annual pass at ₹3,000 starts from August 15: Step-by-step guide to buy

FASTag is introducing an annual pass starting August 15, upgrading highway commute in the country by offering users the option of unlimited travel for a flat fee of ₹3,000 per year. The annual pass is also accompanied by a distance-based pricing model for those who do not travel long distances regularly.(PTI File Photo for representation) Unlike the normal FASTag recharge system, where citizens need to recharge once the balance is exhausted, the annual pass comes with a prepaid model offering up to 200 toll crossings or one year of validity, whichever is earlier. A boon for frequent highway and expressway commuters in India, the annual pass ensures unlimited access to national highways, expressways, and state expressways without the need for any additional recharges throughout the year. The annual pass is also accompanied by a distance-based pricing model for those who do not travel long distances regularly. Under this framework, users can opt to pay ₹50 for every 100 kilometers, replacing the current variable toll rates and ensure flexibility and affordability during their occasional travel. Steps to purchase FASTag annual pass before August 15 Follow these steps to purchase your FASTag annual pass before the August 15 deadline. 1. Access the official platform: Download the Rajmarg Yatra application from Google Play Store or App Store or log in to the official NHAI/MoRTH portal using your registered mobile number or directly enter your vehicle's registration number and FASTag ID if not logged in.. These platforms will provide secure access to FASTag services. 2. Verify eligibility: The app or portal would run backend checks to determine whether the FASTag is active, appropriately attached, and linked to the correct vehicle registration. It also conducts a thorough check to ensure that the registered FASTag is not blacklisted. 3. Make payment: After the backend checks are completed, users would be provided with multiple FASTag recharge plans, from which they have to choose the annual pass option of ₹3,000. Users would be then redirected to payment options like UPI, debit/credit cards, or net banking from which they can opt for one according to their convenience. FASTag wallet balance cannot be used for paying the annual pass fee. 4. Linking of annual pass: Once the payment is successfully completed, the Annual Pass would be linked to the existing FASTag account and vehicle registration. 5. SMS confirmation: Users will finally be receiving a confirmation on SMS, that will notify them regarding their FASTag activation on August 15. Things to keep in mind regarding new FASTag annual pass: 1. According to Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), the annual pass is applicable only for private non-commercial Car/Jeep/Van and that its use in any commercial vehicle will result in immediate deactivation without a notice. 2. The annual pass is valid at all national highways and national expressways. At fee plazas on expressways, state highways etc, that is managed by state governments or local bodies, the FASTag will operate as a regular FASTag, and applicable user fee charges may apply. 3. IHMCL also says that the annual pass cannot be issued on FASTags registered only with a chassis number. The Vehicle Registration Number must be updated to activate the annual pass. 4. Users must note that the annual pass is not mandatory, and that they can choose to continue operating their FASTag in the regular manner, i.e. in regular transactions as per applicable user fee rates at fee plazas. 5. IHMCL denies the payment of ₹3,000 for the annual pass through the FASTag wallet balance. Users must pay the annual pass fee only through the payment options available in the Rajmargyatra App or the NHAI/MoRTH portal. The existing wallet balance can be used for State Highway tolls, parking, etc.
