Tony Wilson Archive teams up with Manchester gallery for first ever exhibition
The former Granada Reports presenter and co-founder of Factory Records died in 2007 after achieving fame for championing North West music and culture.
Joy Division, Happy Mondays, New Order and the Haçienda Nightclub are just some of the Manchester icons Tony aka 'Mr Manchester' played a part in creating.
The immersive exhibition curated by Smolensky Gallery features an intimate collection of personal letters, photography, memorabilia and artwork, exploring Wilson's impact on music, design and culture in Manchester.
The items have been preserved and catalogued over the past 20-years by the Wilson family, led by Tony's son Oli.
Oli said: "This is the first time we're doing something in the real world as the Tony Wilson Archive so it's great to finally get here and be doing an exhibition with Smollensky Gallery, which I think is a great space and I couldn't think of a better place in Manchester for our home over the next 12 months.
"It's been a huge joy for me to share the archive with the world. It's really inspiring. All of the items tell a really unique story.
"A lot of these items haven't been seen since the actual time they were made.. so it feels like an honour to bring them out into the world again."
Director of Smolensky Gallery and exhibition curator Joe Wilson said: 'Tony Wilson's impact on this great city is everywhere to see and hear, as the music he helped to shape enjoys its renaissance. It's only right that the cultural works of Mr Manchester are available for everyone to see and enjoy.'

After three decades at the corporation, he took to X - formerly known as Twitter - to officially announce he was leaving BBC News. Tony posted: "Heading off into the sunset. Some personal news. "After 29 years, today is my last day at BBC News. It's been amazing, but the offer of redundancy was too good to turn down - and it felt like a good time to try something new." He added: "Not sure what comes next - watch this space." His followers left gushing comments for the star as they mourned his withdrawal from the TV station. One user wrote: "Sorry to hear that, but I expect you will have fun on the other side!" A second stated: "All the very best Tony for whatever comes next." While someone else added: "All the very best Tony, have a ball!" He later won a second RTS award for a story on the death of teenager Molly Russell after viewing self-harm images online. Tony also covered huge global events such as Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic after he was promoted to Senior Broadcast Journalist in 2010. The star has also accompanied the Prime Minister around the world on trips to Europe, the USA and China. Recent reporting has seen him travel to Ukraine and the Middle East to report.

The series is gearing up to mark its anniversary in style, and as part of it, familiar faces from the show's history will be popping up to check in on the village. And all three have connections to long-standing resident, Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard). A source told The Sun Online: 'They were all hugely popular characters in the 90s and had to be a part of the anniversary. 'Hollyoaks might have a lot of younger viewers now but bosses really wanted to remember the 90s roots, so there's set to be some real nostalgia coming up.' The stars have already begun filming their scenes. Hollyoaks declined to comment when approached by The Sun Online. During their time on Hollyoaks, all three became central to major storylines that defined the show as a soap for younger audiences – especially when it came to Tony. It's been years since any of the characters have appeared in the Hollyoaks world, although Redmond has repeatedly reprised his role of Finn for guest stints to mark special occasions. Arriving on the show as a free-spirited heartthrob in 1998, Finn became close friends with Tony Hutchinson, even going into business together. While he left in 2002, he later returned for a stint in after-watershed spin-off Hollyoaks Later, the 20th anniversary in 2015, and again for Christmas in 2017. His last appearance was in 2018, when Finn left for Margate after taking the fall for Cindy Cunningham (Steph Waring) stealing £10,000 for the purchase of a restaurant. Natalie Casey's Carol arrived on the soap in 1996, but hasn't been seen since 2000. She also had close ties to both Finn and particularly Tony, with whom she had a will they/won't they relationship. Eventually, she left to perform on cruise ships, confessing her feelings to Tony before she did so in special Hollyoaks: Boys Do Barca. Hollyoaks legend arrested for murder - and it's not Jez
Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Tuesday's (August 19) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on at 7pm. Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard) has been arrested over the death of Bobby Costello (Zak Sutcliffe) after his presence at the scene of the crime was revealed during the funeral. Bobby, as viewers know, escaped from prison earlier this year while serving time in prison for the killing of both Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle) and Verity Hutchinson (Eva O'Hara). Fans will also remember that the boy attempted to murder Felix Westwood (Richard Blackwood) – who was seeing his mum at the time – as he set a fire in Price Slice, which led to DeMarcus' (Tomi Ade) life being put in danger. Tony had long held animosity towards Bobby for taking the life of sister Verity, which led to numerous showdowns between he and Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe). In an unexpected turn of events, sparks flew between the warring duo, with an affair commencing shortly afterwards. Mercedes, however, ultimately knew that Tony's true heart lay with Diane (Alex Fletcher) and therefore they called things off. In reality, the boy was murdered by Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield), who has killed numerous characters over the past year. Tuesday's offering of the long-running soap saw Mercedes in tears as she prepared to say goodbye to Bobby on the day of his funeral, while John Paul (James Sutton) – who was present during Bobby's demise – attempted to remember what happened on the day of his nephew's death as he struggled with flashbacks. Tony was taken aback when Mercedes asked him to attend the funeral – which was being live-streamed – with her and soon Diane discovered that the two characters had been secretly sleeping together. In emotional scenes, Diane stormed over to the church and berated Tony for cheating on her, with Mercedes confirming that they'd seen each other briefly – but assured Di that they were over. Diane, who had assisted Tony in getting rid of the car he believed killed Bobby, let slip about her husband's alleged role in Bobby's death, much to the horror of Mercedes. Jez, who was recovering in hospital following his fall last week, was watching on the livestream and he was filled with glee to see someone else get the blame for his crime. Mercedes slapped Tony and ordered everyone out of the church, while Diane made it quite clear that she and Tone were over for good. More Trending In heartwrenching scenes, the police arrived to take Tony away as the village watched on. The question is: is Tony going to be sentenced to prison for a crime he did not commit? Will Jez really get away with his murderous actions? Or can Sienna (Anna Passey), who knows all about Jez's dastardly deeds, expose her father for the killer that he is and secure Tony's freedom in the process? Later this week, Sienna heads to the police station, hoping to speak to Dodger Savage (Danny Mac) about what she knows but, to her horror, Jez appears before her very eyes.
