After meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Energy Minister Tim Hodgson — in the city to don boots and flip pancakes at the Calgary Stampede — Mayor Jyoti Gondek says she was 'pleasantly surprised,' and is 'more optimistic about this government,' than the previous one under former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

The morning after their meeting on July 4, Carney said that it was 'highly, highly likely that we will have an oil pipeline, ' as one of the national-interest projects expedited by Bill C-5.

The mayor highlighted projects in the city like the Prairie Economic Gateway, and the federal partnership it would require to see them through. Gondek said she expect the project to lead to jobs, economic impact, and general growth, something she also seeks partnership in preparing for.

Infrastructure maintenance has come under scrutiny from local businesses. The City of Calgary is facing a class-action lawsuit over allegations regarding development in Marda Loop, and was recently threatened with legal action by a coalition of businesses along Stephen Avenue should the expected pipe replacement begin July 14.

'I think it's important to recognize that sometimes, we do need to disrupt, disrupt regular patterns because we've got to replace infrastructure that's under the ground,' Gondek said. 'I don't think any city has got it absolutely right and we are no exception. I think we need to be much better at looking to our business partners to understand how we can be most effective in doing the upgrades that we need to really keeping their long term viability in mind, but also understanding how we can make things easier than short term as well.'
