Gaana music: a versatile art form that steals Chennai's heart
Born on the streets of north Chennai, Gaanawas originally sung only at funerals. 'People had to stay awake the entire night for the wake. The pain of losing a loved one is enormous and to keep them distracted for some time, we sing the praises of the deceased, usually in our lyrics with existing tunes,' explains Chennai Nagooran, president, Tamil Nadu Gaana Artists Association.
Today, gaana is not limited to just funerals; it has gained a wider audience with its use in cinema from the 1990s in songs such as Machi Mannaaru by Ilayaraaja in En Uyir Thozhan (1990). But what brought Gaana singers a huge following was Gana Ulaganathan's song Vazha Meenukum in Chithiram Pesuthadi (2006). Today, many films have at least one Gaana song and many have their own curated Gaana playlist.
The versatile art form is today performed at birthdays, weddings, temple festivals, baby showers, and protests, with songs on subjects such as caste, love, politics, garbage, and murder. The Casteless Collective, an 18-member ensemble band that includes singer Isaivani, Tenma, Arivu, and Muthu, broke new ground by mixing Gaana with hip-hop, folk, and rap. A collaboration of filmmaker Pa. Ranjith's organisation, Neelam Cultural Centre with Tenma's label Madras Records, it has released sharp political commentary through its music.
'No other type of song can be used to send a message as quickly and upbeat as Gaana does. It resonates with the people,' says Gaana Merlin, 21, who has gained a bigger following after competing in Super Singer. Gaana's imprint on Chennai is indelible as captured by Ms. Merlin and Maima Sudhakar's song Chennai Vaasi,where the lyrics 'Inna da illa Chennai ulla, Chennai ah adichika oore illa.' (What's not there in Chennai, nothing can beat our Chennai city)
'Every street in north Chennai now has at least two Gaana singers with many more showing interest in taking up the art,' says Gana Vimala, the first transperson Gaana singer.
Women's space
While the scene has been dominated by men, women are now foraying into the picture with support from their families, areas, and encouragement from other artistes.
N. Muniyammal, 60, a Gaana singer from Vyasarpadi, had to learn the art form in secret. 'My father and brothers would go around singing Gaana at funerals. I would follow them on the sly and listen in. But I was never allowed to join them or sing. When they were out of town for other kutcheris (funerals), I would go sing at local kutcheris. People loved my voice but my family and husband didn't allow it,' she says. Now, she has been singing in the public arena for the past 12 years with encouragement from her family. She has also performed at Neelam Cultural Centre's Margazhiyil Makkalisai. Munniyammal's grandsons and granddaughters continue to sing Gaana.
Gaana singer and member of Casteless Collective Isaivani recalls the first time taking the stage to sing: 'The comments by the musicians there in seeing me pick up a mic, it was difficult. They tried to discourage me. But once I started, there was no stopping. The people loved it,' she adds.
However, artistes point out that the stigma surrounding it still continues. 'The approach to us (Gaana artistes) in recording studios is very disrespectful. Moreover, within the Gaanacommunity, when a woman enters the stage, the looks and comments by other artistes are disgusting. Gaana feeds me; Gaana gave me opportunities and respect among the public,' Ms. Merlin says.
'When we get more opportunities to tell our stories through Gaana, more women will come out to show their talent,' Ms. Muniyammal adds.

Comedian Bharti Singh's mother did everything that she could to abort her. Bharti nearly wasn't born. When she arrived in the world despite her mother's efforts, the midwife was paid only Rs 60 to cut her umbilical cord. 'I cost Rs 60,' she said in an appearance on Raj Shamani's podcast. Bharti survived a childhood that was filled with poverty, but lacked a father figure. Her mother worked as a house help to make ends meet. But even though she has no memory of her father, who died when she was just two, Bharti adores her mother. To her, she is a goddess. She recalled, 'In those days, women wouldn't even come to know that they were pregnant. It was only after around three months that she realised that she was pregnant with me. She already had two kids by then, and didn't want another. She tried so hard to abort me. She would eat strange herbs on the advice of godmen; she would deliberately put herself through physical strain; she would consume food that she knew she shouldn't. All to abort me. But I was destined to be born. She gave birth to my by herself; she was alone at home. She paid a midwife Rs 60 to cut the umbilical cord. I always say, 'I cost Rs 60'.' 'I was an unwanted child. They knew that they couldn't raise another kid, being in the situation that they were,' she said, adding that she adores her mother. Bharti said that when she got the call to appear on The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, her relatives warned her mother not to take her to Mumbai. They feared that she would be abused, or that the city would corrupt her. But, Bharti said, to her mother's credit, she agreed to take the chance and see what happens. 'If she hadn't made that decision then, I wouldn't be here,' Bharti said categorically. She continued, 'To put it plainly, I don't want my mother to die. I wouldn't be able to live if she dies. She was very ill last year; she had a kidney transplant. Since then, I've started manifesting. I have succeeded. When they took my mother into the operation theatre, I manifested that one day, I would visit Puri with her, and it happened. I am a God-fearing person, and for me, there are two Gods; my mother and the Almighty. And I'm really terrified of losing her. Even my dreams are all about her.' In the same interview, Bharti spoke at great length about her childhood, and her journey in the television industry. Married to writer Haarsh Limbachiyaa, Bharti now also runs a YouTube channel with over 7 million subscribers.

Comedian Bharti Singh comes from humble beginnings. The first time that she took a flight was when she was called to Mumbai for a comedy show. Before that, she had experienced difficult times as a child. Her father died when she was just two years old, leaving her 22-year-old mother to fend for herself and her three children. Bharti said that her mother cleaned houses for a living, and was often made to feel lesser. This had a huge impact on Bharti's mind, and she was determined to do everything in her power to provide a better life for her mother. 'If I could erect a temple for her, I would,' she said in a recent appearance on Raj Shamani's show. Bharti said that she treats all her staff with love and respect because she saw how her mother was treated when she worked at others' homes. 'I remember my mother would come home after some employer had scolded her. She would tell my sister about it. She would get upset if she broke a plate or something. Sometimes, she would get hurt also, and we'd see a bandage on her hand. On Diwali, we would wait for our mother eagerly, because we knew she'd get a box of sweets. We could never afford sweets. We couldn't afford firecrackers. We couldn't even imagine buying new clothes. I would get old clothes given to her by her employers,' she said. They've give her leftover food, and we'd be so happy that we'd get to eat kofta or daal makhani.' Opening up about losing her father and how that made her feel as a child, Bharti said, 'I was two when my father died. He had cholera, and he coughed up blood after drinking. I have no memory of him. Even today, there's a picture of him at home, but I don't recognise him. He's a stranger. I tell them to pull the picture down. They wouldn't make fun of me, but they would feel pity for me. The teacher would segregate us on the basis of who had a father and who didn't, because the kids who didn't have dads would be given schoolbooks. I didn't know what a father was, I would hear my friends talk about their dads. I learned that fathers are strict and they bring gifts; I didn't know. I would feel like I was different.' Bharti is now one of the highest-paid individuals on Indian television. She has long been associated with Kapil Sharma, and now runs a massively popular YouTube channel with over 7 million subscribers.
