Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Arrives In Singapore For Shangri-La Dialogue

SINGAPORE, May 31 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in Singapore for a one-day working visit to participate in the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD), the premier defence and security conference in the Asia-Pacific region.
The aircraft carrying Anwar touched down at Singapore Changi Airport at 11.39 am.
He will proceed to the Shangri-La Hotel on Orange Grove Road, where he is scheduled to deliver a Special Address at 2:45 pm.
Prior to that, the Prime Minister is scheduled to receive a courtesy call from United States Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Anwar will also meet Boeing Global president and Boeing Company senior vice president Dr Brendan Nelson on the sidelines of the dialogue.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has been in Singapore since Friday to attend the dialogue.
The three-day 22nd SLD, which began on Friday, features participation from 47 countries, including 40 ministerial-level delegates, 20 chiefs of defence forces, over 20 senior defence officials, and leading academics from across the region.
During his visit, Anwar will also hold a bilateral meeting with his Singaporean counterpart, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The two leaders are expected to review the state of Malaysia-Singapore relations and exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual concern.

Saudi authorities earlier announced that the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah will begin this Wednesday, with the Day of Arafah to be observed on Thursday, followed by Aidiladha on Friday. According to the General Authority for Statistics, a total of 1,833,164 Muslims from around the world are expected to perform the Hajj this year, including 1,611,310 international pilgrims and 221,854 domestic pilgrims. - Bernama

Company director loses RM137,200 in fake govt tender scam in Kemaman
CHUKAI, June 1 — A company director lost RM137,200 after falling victim to a syndicate offering a fictitious government tender. Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the 52-year-old man was contacted via WhatsApp on May 13 by someone posing as a representative of a public university in Kelantan, offering a tender to supply 20 air-conditioning units and a power generator. 'To gain the victim's trust, the suspect sent four purchase orders allegedly issued by the secretary-general of the Higher Education Ministry, along with contact details of a supposed supplier,' he said in a statement today. The victim believed the offer and made seven bank transfers to an account under the name Gertrude Chee over a five-day period starting May 27. He later discovered the tender was a scam. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Police urge the public to verify any tender offers with the relevant authorities before making financial transactions. — Bernama

China accuses US's Hegseth of ‘vilifying' remarks at security forum
BEIJING: China has protested to the United States against 'vilifying' remarks made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the foreign ministry said on Sunday, while accusing it of deliberately ignoring calls for peace from regional nations. China has objected to Hegseth calling it a threat in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added, describing his comments at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday as 'deplorable' and 'intended to sow division'. 'Hegseth deliberately ignored the call for peace and development by countries in the region and instead touted the Cold War mentality for bloc confrontation, vilified China with defamatory allegations, and falsely called China a 'threat',' the ministry said on its website. 'The United States has deployed offensive weaponry in the South China Sea and kept stoking flames and creating tensions in the Asia-Pacific, which are turning the region into a powder keg,' it added in the statement. Hegseth had urged allies in the Indo-Pacific region, including key security partner Australia, to spend more on defence after warning of the 'real and potentially imminent' threat from China. Asked about the call to boost defence spending, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government had pledged an extra A$10 billion ($6 billion) to defence. 'What we'll do is we'll determine our defence policy,' he told reporters on Sunday, a transcript of his remarks showed. As part of Washington's longstanding defence ties with the Philippines, the U.S. military this year deployed Typhon launchers that can fire missiles to hit targets in both China and Russia from the island of Luzon. China and the Philippines contest sovereignty over some islands and atolls in the South China Sea, with growing maritime run-ins between their coast guards as both vie to patrol the waters. China's delegation at the forum said 'external intervention' was the biggest risk for stability in the South China Sea, saying the country had shown 'goodwill and restraint' through talks on the issue.
