GENERAL Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a question-and-answer session after delivering his special address in conjunction with the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue 2025 held at the hotel in Singapore. -- fotoBERNAMA (2025) COPYRIGHT RESERVED By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, May 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has taken the initiative to invite different groups in the Myanmar conflict for a dialogue in Kuala Lumpur in a bid to find a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. He said the invitation was extended to the groups last month. 'I've started…and I urge my counterparts to send their teams, officials and military personnel intelligence to continue to engage,' he said during a question-and-answer session following his Special Address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, here. When asked about the possibility of elections in Myanmar, Anwar said the immediate priority is to ensure peace, security, and the delivery of humanitarian aid. He noted that ASEAN leaders have continued to push for an extended ceasefire and the protection of all humanitarian aid workers. 'If the elections are fair and more inclusive and do not exclude parties, then of course, we are ready to accept, although (the process) may not be perfect,' he added. Myanmar's State Administration Council (SAC), in March, announced that they will hold a general election either in December this year or January 2026 at the latest, according to international media reports. -- BERNAMA

Economic Openness Vital For Regional Stability, Prosperity -- PM Anwar
GENERAL By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, May 31 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the importance of maintaining economic openness in Southeast Asia, saying that it has long served as a foundation for regional prosperity, political stability, and cohesion. Delivering his remarks at the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue here, Anwar said economic openness is not only a pathway to growth but also a stabilising force in international relations. 'It is a source of equilibrium, both between nations and within them, to address pressing issues such as poverty, social inequities, or even the digital divide. 'Open markets create the kind of mutual exposure between nations that encourages caution, not confrontation,' he said. The prime minister cautioned that disruptions to economic openness could undermine investor confidence and destabilise financial flows. He noted that ASEAN leaders have expressed concern over the growing threat of unilateral actions, retaliatory tariffs, and the risk of global economic fragmentation. The ASEAN leaders' statement on global economic and trade uncertainty also reaffirmed ASEAN's commitment to an open, predictable, and rules-based trading system -- not out of convenience, but because it is 'existential.' Anwar noted that, as open and export-driven economies like Malaysia, any fragmented trade can result in increased costs, lower resilience, and depressed investment.

PM Anwar Calls For Decisive, Consistent Action On Gaza At Shangri-La Dialogue
GENERAL By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, May 31 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the international community to act decisively and consistently in response to the genocide in Gaza. Delivering his Special Address at the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue here, Anwar said the scale of devastation, blatant disregard for humanitarian norms, and the failure of global institutions to effectively address the conflict demand more than expressions of sympathy. 'We must not allow selective outrage or strategic fatigue to dull our moral clarity. Indeed, the genocide in Gaza is a test of our collective conscience,' he said. Anwar also described the current global landscape - with the number of armed conflicts at its highest since the end of the Second World War - as a sobering moment in history. He stressed that Malaysia is under no illusions about the security challenges ahead, noting that lasting stability must be rooted in sound fundamentals, clear policies, and a long-term vision. -- BERNAMA
