A CFO's outlook: How can banks navigate economic shifts to maintain positive returns?

The current global economic landscape looks to present a complex array of opportunities and challenges for Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) in the banking sector. Although anticipation around interest rate reductions is tempered by high inflation expectations, quoting JP Morgan Chase's CEO, Jamie Dimon at 2025 SIEPR Economic Summit on the US & Global economic outlook: 'It's all inflationary', there continues to be a steadfast focus on maintaining the level of positive returns we have seen in the past couple of years.
Given the total 1% rate cut in 2024, banks have rising concerns about lower net interest margins, are increasing investing in technology, all while adapting to a rapidly evolving regulatory environment. All these factors have a negative impact on bottom-line results (especially in the shorter term), making cost control and implementing scalable processes a high priority. On the other hand, risk costs are still relatively low; the GCC region sees healthy growth and an abundance of opportunities.
Against this backdrop, the question emerges: how can we continue to drive efficiency and profitable growth at the same time? As always, we, as banking CFOs, must be agile, look ahead and reinvent ourselves. This means, for example, increasingly prioritising artificial intelligence (AI) and automation over conventional cost strategies. In parallel, we must focus on diversification strategies so as to ensure that our banks have various revenue streams to grow profitability now, and in the future, while continuing to meet ever-evolving consumer needs.
Balancing cost control and growth
As CFOs, we are tasked with the dual mandate of controlling costs and fostering growth even during economic volatility. Encouragingly, as per Grant Thornton's CFO survey, a significant 79% of CFOs express confidence in driving profit growth in 2025. This optimism is rooted in strategic initiatives aimed at balancing short-term financial stability with long-term growth prospects.
As per FTI Consulting's CFO Report 2025, cost optimisation has emerged as the top strategic initiative, and CFOs must scrutinise every aspect of their organisation to identify inefficiencies and reduce unnecessary expenditures, while also exploring new growth avenues.
CFOs must play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of financial discipline across their organisations. By encouraging departments to align their budgets with overarching corporate goals, CFOs must be careful that cost-cutting measures do not compromise operational effectiveness or hinder strategic objectives.
By adopting a forward-looking approach, banks can remain competitive while navigating economic uncertainties.
Increased adoption of technology as a driver of growth
In this era of rapid change, technology emerges more than ever as a powerful ally for CFOs. Investments in IT and digital transformation have accelerated, with AI and automation at the forefront of these initiatives. These technologies offer the potential to streamline operations, enhance decision-making, and reduce costs.
AI-driven analytics can provide real-time insights into financial performance, enabling CFOs to make data-informed decisions with greater precision. Automation, reduces the burden of repetitive tasks, allowing for a greater focus on strategic priorities. By adopting these technologies wherever possible across operations, banks not only improve efficiency but also foster innovation.
Technology will also continue to be a driver of diversification in 2025. Advanced financial innovations such as open banking and embedded finance will, apart from creating healthy competition, enable banks to keep up with evolving consumer demand; partnerships with fintech companies and other third-party providers will continue to open up the financial industry, expanding newer revenue streams as banks and providers work together to meet changing customer needs. At Mashreq, for example we recently partially sold a significant stake in our payment company NEO PAY to a consortium including Turkish Fintech, DGPays. One of the reasons for this transaction is that partnering with DGPays can unlock additional value for NEO PAY, especially in the open banking environment.
As the adoption of technology becomes increasingly integral to financial management, CFOs must position themselves, alongside their bank's Head of Tech, as champions of digital transformation within their organisations, and collaborate to align on strategy and execution.
Adapting to economic shifts
The past years of elevated interest rates have left a lasting imprint on corporate debt servicing. Unless companies are cash-rich and can redeem their debt, they are bound to grapple with the increased borrowing costs, a trend that is expected to persist even as interest rates begin to ease. Businesses that relied on low-cost borrowing (for example heavy leveraged Tech companies) during the era of ultra-low interest rates, now face the challenge of recalibrating their financial strategies. According to a global forecast by Moody's, loan default rates should drop globally below 3% by October 2025, but even at this lower level, the strain on some businesses navigating these financial headwinds of increased costs of borrowing will persist, with the resulting impact felt by the banking industry at some point in time.
The environment predicted for 2025 will necessitate innovative approaches from CFOs. Effective debt restructuring, renegotiation of loan terms, and robust risk management strategies are essential tools to mitigate the impact of defaults. Additionally, CFOs must focus on maintaining healthy cash reserves and exploring alternative financing options to bolster their organisations against potential liquidity crises.
The coming months: Technology, innovation and embracing change
In navigating the complexities of 2025, CFOs must strike a delicate balance between cost control, maintaining positive returns and ensuring strategic investments. Agility and foresight are indispensable traits as economic conditions continue to evolve. Technology, particularly AI and automation, will play an instrumental role in enabling organisations to adapt, compete, and grow. Again, quoting Jamie Dimon, who is very bullish on AI: 'Every time I go to a business review at any level, I ask, what are you doing in AI?', it is like hearing an echo of our Mashreq CEO, Ahmed Abdelaal. With the UAE's aim of being the top global leader in AI, I feel uniquely positioned being a CFO [of a leading bank] in the UAE, to capitalize on the momentum.
The path forward demands a commitment to innovation and a willingness to embrace change. By leveraging advanced technologies, optimising costs, and maintaining a strategic focus on growth, CFOs can lead their organisations through uncertainty and toward a future of sustained success. The evolving economic landscape may pose challenges, but it also presents opportunities for those prepared to seize them.
With the right strategies, CFOs can turn these challenges into catalysts for long-term resilience and prosperity.

Etihad Rail to slash travel time by nearly half: What UAE will be like once trains start

When Etihad Rail passenger train services are rolled out, it has the potential to reduce commute times and give greater connectivity to smaller towns, according to urban planners. The network could even prove a new regional urban system. ' Etihad Rail will redefine mobility across the UAE by enabling reliable, high-speed intercity travel at speeds of up to 200 kmph, reducing commute times by as much as 40 per cent,' said Sercan Alturk, Managing Director at FTI Consulting. 'It's widespread availability will improve social connectivity, foster stronger community ties, and facilitate seamless travel between cities for both work and leisure.' Urban planning expert Shweta Gandhi added that the rail could serve as the 'backbone' of a new regional system. 'Imagine a UAE where you can live in Ajman, work in Abu Dhabi, and spend your weekends in Fujairah, all without relying on a private car,' she said. 'That level of seamless, cross-emirate connectivity could redefine how we think about home, work, and access.' Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. Last week, Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum shared on social media how he rode the passenger train from Dubai to Fujairah and said that he was 'proud' of the country for the project. Etihad Rail is set to launch its passenger train service in 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country's transportation infrastructure. Reduced car dependency According to Sercan, one of the biggest impact the network will have is people's reduced dependency on cars. 'The rail network will offer a reliable and efficient transportation option even in smaller towns,' he said. 'Current projections estimate an annual ridership of 36.5 million passengers, underscoring the network's role as a cornerstone of national mobility transformation.' He added that beyond the environmental impact, the network will alleviate pressure on road infrastructure, with each train helping to reduce vehicle traffic by up to 300 trucks or private passenger vehicles. Farah Naz, Director Climate and Sustainability Advisory at Aecom, added that the passenger train network would steadily improve. 'As per the Green Transition vision, stated in the UAE's Net Zero Long Term Strategy, the country intends to invest 1,000 kilometres of train infrastructure between 2025 and 2030 to accommodate increased passenger travel,' she said. 'The intention is, the number of passenger trains will rise from 2025 onwards, with a progressive increase up to 2050. Therefore, this project is a significant player in alignment with the decarbonisation vision of UAE.' She shared how trains have one of the lowest carbon emissions among modes of transportation and that Etihad Rail would drastically lower the carbon footprint in the UAE. Jobs Farah explained how apart from having low carbon, low cost, sustainable transportation, the project would also 'establish and sustain a significant number of green jobs around the rail network and the cities and communities it will touch'. Sercan added that by 2030, the network is projected to generate over 9,000 direct jobs. 'In parallel, indirect employment opportunities are anticipated to emerge in retail, hospitality, and real estate, particularly in areas surrounding key station hubs,' he said. 'Improved connectivity is expected to stimulate local economic growth, attract new businesses, and enhance access to education and healthcare, making rural communities more vibrant, livable, and well-integrated with urban centers.' Farah added that a reduction in pollution from industry, energy, and transportation will lead to improved air quality and public health. Challenges Despite the positives, Shweta said that the success of the project could depend on a number of factors. 'How people live and work will depend on last-mile integration, first/last-mile connectivity, and how well it interfaces with local transit systems like the Dubai Metro, buses, and emerging micromobility options in other emirates,' she said. 'The rail alone is not a silver bullet, but it can certainly be a powerful backbone for a multi-modal ecosystem.' She added that if not paired with strong land use controls, there's a risk of sprawl, speculative real estate activity, or non-inclusive growth near stations, especially if smaller towns are seen merely as satellite dormitories rather than holistic communities.

JPMorgan to allow crypto purchases with Coinbase

JPMorgan Chase has partnered with crypto exchange Coinbase to introduce crypto integrations to its customers, a step in bridging traditional finance with digital assets. Coinbase announced Wednesday that Chase credit card holders can use their cards to buy crypto on Coinbase starting this fall. In addition, Coinbase said JPMorgan's customers will also be able to redeem their Chase Ultimate Rewards Points for USDC in 2026. Coinbase said this will be the first major rewards program redeemable for crypto. 'For the first time, points from a major credit card rewards program will be redeemable for crypto rewards,' Coinbase said. Coinbase also said Chase card users can link their accounts to Coinbase directly. The exchange said this feature, scheduled for 2026, will give users easier ways to buy crypto. JPMorgan continues its crypto journey The new integration follows a broader push by JPMorgan into digital assets. On July 16, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon revealed in an earnings call that the company had plans to be involved in stablecoins. The move was driven by competition with other fintech companies that are trying to replicate traditional financial systems. 'We're going to be involved in both JPMorgan deposit coin and stablecoins to understand it and be good at it,' Dimon said. Apart from stablecoins, JPMorgan is reportedly looking to offer direct loans against Bitcoin and Ether. On July 22, the Financial Times cited anonymous sources who reported the bank's exploration of crypto-backed loans. The report said the bank may start lending against crypto by 2026. However, the plans are subject to change. Fees, collateral remain DeFi's edge on crypto lending Even though JPMorgan may be eyeing crypto loans, decentralized finance (DeFi) players still have advantages over the bank and other traditional finance players on crypto loans, according to 1inch co-founder Sergej Kunz. On Wednesday, Kunz told Cointelegraph that DeFi's strengths lie in offering a wider range of accepted loan collateral. He added that market-driven optimization in DeFi allows users to enjoy lower fees. Source:

US House panel subpoenas JPMorgan, Bank of America CEOs over IPO of China's CATL

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on China said on Thursday it sent subpoenas addressed to JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan over their banks' roles in underwriting the initial public offering of Chinese battery manufacturer CATL. The U.S. government has alleged that CATL, the world's largest electric vehicle battery maker, works with China's military. In January, Washington added CATL to a list of companies that it alleged aided Beijing's military. CATL says it was "not engaged in any military-related activities." The congressional panel asked the banks' executives to comply by August 8. The committee said it requested information from the banks in April. Bank of America produced 10 documents, nine of them public, while JPMorgan produced one public document, the House panel said, adding it has not received all of the requested details. "We've had constructive engagement with the committee and will continue to engage," a Bank of America spokesperson said. JPMorgan declined to comment. Earlier this year, Republican U.S. Representative John Moolenaar, who chairs the House Select Committee on China, urged the U.S. banks to pull out of underwriting the Hong Kong IPO of the Chinese firm. Washington and Beijing have had tensions for years spanning issues such as trade tariffs, technology, cybersecurity and geopolitics.
