Janette Manrara dazzles as Roxie Hart in Chicago
On Tuesday, Chicago The Musical had it's opening night for its run at the Llandudno theatre.
Headlining as Roxie Hart was Strictly star Janette Manrara.
Her skills as a dancer were brought to the fore, elevating the routines and physical comedy the role demands - but can she sing?
The answer, simply, is yes.
(Image: Chicago The Musical/Venue Cymru) Manrara's vocals were on point, particularly in the dualling duets with Velma Kelly in an equally stunning performance from Djalenga Scott.
When experiencing Chicago, you are suddenly struck with how many of the iconic musical numbers are ingrained in your memory.
Show opener All that Jazz, Razzle Dazzle, Roxie, and my personal favourite Cell Block Tango (He Had it Coming) are delivered perfectly, carrying the sordid tale of crime and stardom along the most entertaining way.
Members of the audience couldn't help but sing along to the well known hits such as All that Jazz, Cell Block Tango, We Both Reached for the Gun, and Razzle Dazzle.
Set in the 1920s, we see Roxie Hart end up in Cook County Jail after murdering her lover on-the-side in a fit of rage, after he threatened to walk out on her.
In attempts to avoid conviction, Roxie teams up with the slickest criminal lawyer in Chicago who turns her crime into fame, much to the horror of her cellmate and rival Velma.
Scott and Manrara are excellent as Velma and Roxie, serving sass and emotion with breath-taking physicality and top-notch vocals.
Alongside the jailbirds, the talented ensemble deliver an incredible display of Bob Fosse's iconic work.
There was real love from the audience for Joshua Lloyd's portrayal of Amos Hart, and Jordan Lee Davies as Mary Sunshine, Dan Burton as Billy Flynn, and Victoria Anderson as Mama Morton, were equally excellent and note perfect.
Fosse's choreography shines throughout, reaching perfection with Cell Block Tango, I Can't Do it Alone, and We Both Reached for the Gun.
The stark black set and stark spotlights are used expertly to conjure the environments of the county jail, jazz clubs, and the courthouse.
The show's themes are dark and serious, with a whole heap of cynicism, but due to the show's high energy and wit, the fun and excitement never let up for a second.
The extremely talented live orchestra are also more than worthy of note, their belting performances setting pulses racing and transporting the audience to the seedy world of jazz clubs.
It was so refreshing to witness the orchestra on stage throughout the whole show, adding that extra feeling that we were looking into a jazz club.
Chicago The Musical razzles and dazzles from the opening note to the final curtain, and will be running at Llandudno's Venue Cymru until May 3.

The 26-year-old took part in A Disney Wish UK – a three-day experience at Hoar Cross Hall in Staffordshire - with more than 200 children living with critical illness. Tasha told the Mirror: "The work they do is incredible. They're a great charity, providing magical, beautiful experiences for all these families. I felt so honoured to be a part of that, to just make them happy, make them go away with these beautiful memories. "It was so emotional and magical– I look back on it and just feel grateful to be part of that. "I want to keep doing charity work, be a real advocate for the deaf community and work with charities like Make-A-Wish. "These are the things I'm passionate about, I want to help people when I can. That's what is really important to me." The deaf dancer also opened up about her own struggles with her disability. She added: "I do still face difficulties today, but, you know, it doesn't compare at all to that these children go through every single day. "Everyone has their own difficulties, dealing with disabilities and illnesses, but these children live in a hospital, and for Make-A-Wish to provide an experience where it's all accessible, they can travel and they look after them. "It's so important to have that in the world, because the world can be so sad and scary sometimes. It's nice to have that positive light in their lives."

Dani Dyer 'signs up for Strictly' after marrying Jarrod Bowen on emotional day
Dani Dyer has reportedly signed up to take part in this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing after tying the knot with footballer Jarrod Bowen in a lavish wedding this weekend. The 28-year-old, who is the daughter of actor Danny Dyer, is best known for winning Love Island back in 2018. While her romance with Love Island co-star Jack Fincham didn't work out, Dani finally found her happy ending - with the TV star marrying Premier League footballer Jarrod, 28, after they first started dating in 2021. Now, the TV star is rumoured to be taking to the Strictly dancefloor, with reports that she has signed a pre-contract for the show and is currently in pay deal talks. A Strictly insider told The Sun that BBC bosses are "thrilled" that she'll be taking part and are currently "ironing out her fee". They added: "She's bubbly, down-to-earth and straight-talking and producers reckon she'll make an ideal contestant — not to mention the bonus of having Jarrod and dad Danny in the audience supporting her." You've always said you adore dancing. Was this the perfect show for you? Oh yes, dance is my biggest passion. It was the perfect show for me. I was dancing and having the time of my life and making new friends. I look back with such fond memories of the cast, Strictly really is magic. I'm so excited to see the new cast this year. Honestly, the people doing it are going to love it. They're in for a treat. There's been controversy around celebrity welfare on Strictly. How did you find it? My experience on Strictly was really positive. I had the best time. I look back with pure happiness and joy, because I just loved every single second. Do you have any exciting work projects coming up? I want to keep doing charity work, be a real advocate for the deaf community and work with charities like Make-A-Wish.
