Virgin Voyages Launches Rojo, Adding More Razzle Dazzle To High Seas
Cruise lines have been hitting it out of the park with their food and beverage efforts of late, as high-concept restaurants from celebrity chefs is increasingly on the menu. The latest example of this can be seen via Brilliant Lady, Virgin Voyages' newest ship, which is already about to get a restaurant upgrade as the line has unveiled Rojo by Razzle Dazzle, a new Spanish-inspired restaurant. Maine Lobster Paella at Rojo by Razzle Dazzle, a new Spanish-inspired restaurant on Virgin Voyages. ... More The new restaurant, helmed by chefs Justin Severino and Nate Hobart, who are famously co-chefs of Morcilla, a Pittsburgh-based Spanish-style charcuteria, will feature signature dishes such as Oxtail Montadito with braised oxtail, caramelized onion, mahón cheese and a crostini. "Rojo came to fruition after many discussions of how we wanted to evolve our award-winning culinary program," said Chef Levi Mezick, Director of Culinary Program Development at Virgin Voyages, in an interview. "We wanted to showcase one of our incredible homeports and chose Barcelona because we thought the convivial nature of small, tapas-style dining felt very Virgin and lends itself to the sense of community we try to build on each voyage. Also, Spanish cuisine has amazing depth and flavor that the team fell in love with," said Mezick. This is in a long line of exciting new restaurant concepts Virgin has been unveiling. "Rojo is the latest pop-up taking over the Razzle Dazzle restaurant," said Mezick. There's been other pop-ups like this across the fleet, such as Lucky Lotus by Razzle Dazzle, which is a Chinese-inspired culinary concept, and Razzle Dazzle by Night which is a modern twist on American classics. "Lucky Lotus (which launched in the fall aboard Scarlet Lady), was so well received and now the highest rated restaurant across the fleet. Coming off that success, we also wanted to give Brilliant Lady a handful of fresh experiences (and experiences Sailors could only get on that ship), so we decided to totally change the look and feel of Razzle Dazzle," said Mezick. For this restaurant, rather than black and white "Razzle Dazzle" pattern (inspired by WWI ships), this spot will have what is meant to be more of a Spanish flair, such as deeper red tones and warm wood accents. A standout item on the menu is Oxtail Montadito with caramelized onion, mahon cheese and crostini. "The oxtail is slowly braised and then mixed with garlic and fresh herbs. We coat the crostini with a caramelized onion jam and then top with the oxtail and mahon cheese. The dish is a savory explosion of flavor. It has a deep rich flavor that only comes from long slow cooking," said Mezick. Char ártico asado a la plancha with arctic char, Artichokes, and salsa verde. Another signature dish will be char ártico asado a la plancha with arctic char, Artichokes, and salsa verde. "I have alway loved cooking fish and Arctic Char has always been one of my favorites. The fish has a mild flavor that is slightly buttery and sweet. The flavor of the char is enhanced by adding crispy artichokes and a fresh tanginess that comes from the salsa verde," said Mezick. As ship restaurants need to rise to the occasion day and night to fully be appreciated, during the day, there'll also be a Spanish-American brunch with dishes that include jamon croquettes paired with options such as acai bowls, pastries and frittatas. At night, the menu features pintxos, tapas, and platos grandes and a wine menu that will include well-known Spanish bold reds like Rioja and Ribera del Duero as well as whites like Albariños from Rias Baixas as well as artisanal vermouths, sangrias, sherries and sparkling Provocativo cava spritzes. Rojo by Razzle Dazzle will open on September 5, 2025 during Brilliant Lady's maiden voyage from New York City to Bermuda.

Iowa DNR says to stay away from goose nests
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – With warmer temperatures ahead, many Siouxlanders will be spending their time outdoors at places like parks. Be careful where you step, though, because you might anger a goose. If you've been out to a park lately, you've likely seen a couple of geese. Wildlife experts are reminding people to avoid getting too close. 'We're getting several calls a day on the geese because they're nesting right now, so they're being seen more and they're being seen more in the same spot,' said Amanda Hase with Forever Wildlife Lodge & Clinic. When geese start nesting, the soon-to-be parents look for the most ideal spot. North High School ProStart students host barbecue 'Geese like short grass, and they love eating the fresh green shoots,' said Stacey Bragg with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. 'So if you want geese around, keep mowing your grass because that's where they're going to go.' However, some geese aren't too picky about where they call home. 'I've actually seen them on the interstate by Dakota Dunes, the playground down by the river front there,' Hase said. 'Some of them are doing it in parking lots and they just have nests in strange places.' Wildlife experts want to emphasize that you should avoid messing with or getting too close to a goose nest. If you do, these geese will get honking mad! 'If you approach geese and they have a nest nearby, they probably will attack and, you know, fight back because they're protecting their babies and that's what their instincts are to do,' Hase said. 'Think about the geese as being protective parents instead of aggressive, that would probably help a little bit,' Bragg said. 'That's all they're doing, is protecting their nests.' If you find yourself in the crosshairs of an angry fowl, remember that they are federally protected, so harming them is out of the question. 'Probably the best thing to do if you come across a very, very aggressive goose is just to keep eye contact with it and just back off and let it calm down,' Bragg said. 'Trying to scare it away is just going to aggravate it even further.' Sioux City Art Center wins award for 'Razzle Dazzle' project While it can take roughly a month for goose eggs to hatch, after a week, they'll leave the nest, giving homeowners and businesses enough time to goose-proof their property. 'Maybe not cut the grass so low, maybe keep some taller native grasses, as, you know, landscaping around your business,' Bragg said. 'Fence it off a little bit, maybe a little snow fence, chicken wire, something that'll put a little cover between maybe a sidewalk entrance to a business and the actual nest. Mylar, pinwheels, balloons, things like that might help the loud noises before they get a nest going. Those are things to think about.' On top of leaving geese alone, the Iowa DNR asks residents to leave other baby animals alone if they find them and don't pick them. Janette Manrara dazzles as Roxie Hart in Chicago
On Tuesday, Chicago The Musical had it's opening night for its run at the Llandudno theatre. Headlining as Roxie Hart was Strictly star Janette Manrara. Her skills as a dancer were brought to the fore, elevating the routines and physical comedy the role demands - but can she sing? The answer, simply, is yes. (Image: Chicago The Musical/Venue Cymru) Manrara's vocals were on point, particularly in the dualling duets with Velma Kelly in an equally stunning performance from Djalenga Scott. When experiencing Chicago, you are suddenly struck with how many of the iconic musical numbers are ingrained in your memory. Show opener All that Jazz, Razzle Dazzle, Roxie, and my personal favourite Cell Block Tango (He Had it Coming) are delivered perfectly, carrying the sordid tale of crime and stardom along the most entertaining way. Members of the audience couldn't help but sing along to the well known hits such as All that Jazz, Cell Block Tango, We Both Reached for the Gun, and Razzle Dazzle. Set in the 1920s, we see Roxie Hart end up in Cook County Jail after murdering her lover on-the-side in a fit of rage, after he threatened to walk out on her. In attempts to avoid conviction, Roxie teams up with the slickest criminal lawyer in Chicago who turns her crime into fame, much to the horror of her cellmate and rival Velma. Scott and Manrara are excellent as Velma and Roxie, serving sass and emotion with breath-taking physicality and top-notch vocals. Alongside the jailbirds, the talented ensemble deliver an incredible display of Bob Fosse's iconic work. There was real love from the audience for Joshua Lloyd's portrayal of Amos Hart, and Jordan Lee Davies as Mary Sunshine, Dan Burton as Billy Flynn, and Victoria Anderson as Mama Morton, were equally excellent and note perfect. Fosse's choreography shines throughout, reaching perfection with Cell Block Tango, I Can't Do it Alone, and We Both Reached for the Gun. The stark black set and stark spotlights are used expertly to conjure the environments of the county jail, jazz clubs, and the courthouse. The show's themes are dark and serious, with a whole heap of cynicism, but due to the show's high energy and wit, the fun and excitement never let up for a second. The extremely talented live orchestra are also more than worthy of note, their belting performances setting pulses racing and transporting the audience to the seedy world of jazz clubs. It was so refreshing to witness the orchestra on stage throughout the whole show, adding that extra feeling that we were looking into a jazz club. Chicago The Musical razzles and dazzles from the opening note to the final curtain, and will be running at Llandudno's Venue Cymru until May 3.
