For more than six centuries, betting on the papacy has been a strange, enduring tradition. While modern sportsbooks like FanDuel won't take your wager on the next Holy Father, British and European oddsmakers are laying lines, some dead serious, others playfully irreverent.
Italian
Cardinal Pietro Parolin
currently leads the pack at 9/4 odds, closely followed by the 'Asian Francis,' Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, at 3/1.
Ghanian Cardinal Peter Turkson and Italian Matteo Zuppi trail at 6/1, according to William Hill.
'People bet on everything, football, elections, celebrity divorces. Why not popes?' said Bill Ordine, a gambling analyst and author, as quoted by US Today. 'It's harder than predicting the NFL draft. You're basically throwing darts in the dark.'
That hasn't stopped punters. Wagers are being placed not just on who will ascend to St.
Peter's throne, but also on what name the next pope will choose, and whether he will hail from a nation that has never had a pontiff before—currently the bookmakers' favorite scenario at 60% odds.
Candidate highlights-
Pietro Parolin (Italy):
Currently the Vatican Secretary of State, Parolin is considered the frontrunner due to his extensive diplomatic experience and close ties within the Roman Curia.
Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines):
Dubbed the "Asian Francis," Tagle is known for his pastoral approach and could become the first Asian pope in history.

Matteo Zuppi (Italy):
The Archbishop of Bologna, Zuppi is seen as a bridge-builder between progressive and conservative factions within the Church.
Peter Turkson (Ghana):
A prominent voice on social justice issues, Turkson would be the first African pope in over a millennium.
Pierbattista Pizzaballa (Israel):
As the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pizzaballa brings a unique perspective from the Holy Land.
While gambling on religious matters might seem sacrilegious to some, the Church has a long, complicated history with it.
In the 1500s, cardinals were rumored to profit off bets via insider tips. Pope Gregory XIV even issued an edict in 1591 threatening excommunication for betting on papal elections. That ban was quietly lifted in 1918.
Today, the activity remains mostly underground in the US, thanks to regulations that prohibit betting on non-sporting events. But in places like the UK and Ireland, where Irish bookmaker Paddy Power once called papal betting 'the biggest non-sports market of all time'—it's game on.
In 2013, bettors were blindsided when Argentina's Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a 33/1 longshot, emerged as
. Could a dark horse shock the world again?
'History says yes,' said Josh Ashton of Online Betting Guide. 'With conclaves, surprises are tradition.'

Opp threatening judges, undermining EC, want infiltrators to be voters: Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Thursday that the Opposition parties were threatening judges delivering impartial verdicts, undermining the Election Commission of India (ECI) while conspiring to turn infiltrators from other countries into legitimate voters. Addressing a gathering at an event to mark the third 'Hindu Gaurav Diwas' in Aligarh, Adityanath accused these parties of dividing the society in the name of PDA (Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak). The programme, observed on the occasion of the death anniversary of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, was also attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, UP Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, BJP state president Bhupendra Chaudhary and senior party leaders Uma Bharti and Kalraj Mishra among others . Pradhan also targeted the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party and their INDIA bloc allies, saying, 'It is natural for those who defy the law to be afraid, because their parties are filled with criminals.' Questioning the 'morality' of the Congress and its allies, he said Kalyan Singh had chosen to resign instead of ordering firing on Ram bhakts during the Ram Mandir movement. 'On the other hand, Arvind Kejriwal did not relinquish power even after going to jail on corruption charges,' he said. Earlier, speaking at the inauguration of a cement plant in Etah, Adityanath Chief Minister Adityanath said the Congress and the Samajwadi Party pushed the country into an identity crisis after centuries of exploitation by the Mughals and British, and that the two never worked for inclusive development, serving only their own families. The district once synonymous with crime and mafia rule has now transformed into a hub of investment and industry, he claimed. 'Eight to nine years ago, Etah was known for land encroachment, where the poor had no voice. Today, it is known for law and order, power generation and industrial growth,' he said. The Chief Minister said the nearby Jawaharpur thermal power plant generates 1,500 megawatt (MW) power, while Shree Cement's unit worth Rs 750 crore has created 500 direct jobs and more than 3,000 indirect employment opportunities. 'This investment is not only about jobs but also about strengthening of trade, transport and distribution networks — the real foundation of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat. There was a time when even a commodity like cement was rationed and would be available only through connections, making house construction extremely difficult,' he said. 'How could development taken place with such an intent and policies?' he asked. India, which was at 11th spot in the world economy by 2014 due to the policies of the Congress and SP, has now grown to become to 4th place under PM Modi and is set to become the third-largest economy within two years, he claimed. Uttar Pradesh too, Adityanath further claimed, has risen from the seventh-largest state economy in 2017 to the second-largest today, the CM added. He credited this economic turnaround to strict action against the mafia and rioters, which restored investors' confidence. 'The state has received investment proposals worth Rs 45 lakh crore, out of which Rs 15 lakh crore have already been executed, creating employment for 60 lakh youth,' he said. He added that 60,244 youth, including many from Etah, were recruited into the police force without any discrimination. Under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Yojana, 70,000 young entrepreneurs received interest and guarantee-free loans to set up their own enterprises. The Chief Minister noted that 'bells and ghungroos' of Etah's Jalesar remain an integral part of worship and musical performances. The state is preparing a roadmap for Viksit Bharat by linking this cultural heritage with modern development, he said, adding, 'In the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council, a 24-hour-long discussion was held on key sectors, and experts will now visit every district to train youth and prepare district-level roadmaps with public participation.' The state government, the Chief Minister said, will honour every promise made under the industrial policy.

CM: Mughals, British looted India, SP & Cong erased nation's identity
1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday accused the Congress and the Samajwadi Party of pushing the country into an identity crisis after centuries of Mughal loot and British exploitation. Speaking at the inauguration of the Rs 750-crore Shree cement plant in Etah, he said the two parties never worked for inclusive development, serving only their families while leaving traders and women unsafe. In contrast, he said, the double-engine govt's clear policies and zero tolerance for crime have taken UP to new heights of development. The Etah cement plant will generate 500 direct jobs in the area, a sign of progress in a region which, before 2017, was only known for crime and mafia, the CM said. Yogi said when Congress was in govt at the Centre, even cement was rationed and could only be procured through connections, which made a huge dent in the construction sector. "How could development happen with such intent and policies? Contrasting this with today's growth, India, which fell to the 11th place in the world economy by 2014 due to Congress and SP policies, has now risen to the 4th place under PM Modi and is set to become the third-largest economy within two years," he said. He alleged that the two opposition parties only worked for their families and never thought about inclusive development, leaving traders and women highly unsafe in the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Etah district, once synonymous with crime and mafia, land encroachment, and harassment of the poor, is now a hub of investment and industry, he added. Yogi outlined that the Jawaharpur thermal power plant near the new cement plant generates 1,500MW of power, while Shree Cement's unit created 500 direct jobs and more than 3,000 indirect jobs. He called this the real foundation of an Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat, where investment was leading to not just jobs but also strengthening trade, transport, and distribution networks. He credited this turnaround to strict action against mafia and rioters, which restored investor confidence in the state. In addition to this, 60,244 youths, including many from Etah, were recruited into the police on merit. Under Mukhyamantri Yuva Yojana, 70,000 young entrepreneurs have received interest-free, guarantee-free loans to establish their own enterprises," he said. The CM highlighted Etah's traditional craft, praising the bell and 'ghunguru' industry for remaining an integral part of temple worship and music gatherings. He linked this cultural heritage with modern development, stating how this would become the basis of a Viksit UP-2047. "In the Assembly and Legislative Council, a 24-hour discussion was held on key sectors, and experts will now visit every district to train youth and prepare district-level roadmaps with public participation," he said. The CM assured full cooperation from govt to investors, adding: "The state will honour every promise made under its industrial policy. With modern infrastructure, four-lane connectivity, and welfare schemes, Etah will soon scale new heights of development." Praising Shree Cement, Yogi said the company was not only generating employment but also fulfilling its social responsibility. The Etah unit has so far provided free cement to 183 families of martyrs. "When our soldiers showed courage in Operation Sindoor, it was possible because the nation stood united. Shree Cement's contribution strengthens this national spirit," he noted. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
