Three held in hostel murder

The Star9 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Three people have been detained over the murder of a 20-year-old university student in a case that has stunned Malaysians.
It is believed that the suspects, aged 19 and 20, knew Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, who was found dead in a students' accommodation in Cyberjaya on Thursday.
Sepang OCPD Asst Comm Norhizam Bahaman said a man and two women were arrested in Johor Baru, Johor, and Gemencheh, Negri Sembilan.
'They were detained within 48 hours of a police report lodged on the case,' he said when contacted.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days until July 3.
As of Thursday, a total of 14 people have had their statements recorded, including the deceased's roommates and a lecturer.
Maniishapriet, a physiotherapy student from Kuching, was staying with five other students but they had returned home for the holidays.
She was thus alone at the hostel as she was preparing for an upcoming examination.
A post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Her ATM card, a laptop, mobile phone and cash were among the belongings found missing.
Police have detected five or six 'suspicious' bank transactions made in the Klang Valley shortly after she was found dead.
The Higher Education Ministry, in a statement on Thursday, said that all public and private higher education institutes must abide by the SOP on security and student welfare.
Compliance is imperative to ensure protection for all students under their responsibility, it said.
Messages of condolences and grief have flooded social media, posted by ordinary Malaysians as well as political leaders.
Some of the postings called for 'Justice for Maniisha'.

Main suspect in Cyberjaya murder used girlfriend's key, access card, say cops

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said four people have been detained in connection with a university student's death last week. PETALING JAYA : The main suspect in the murder of a 20-year-old university student in Cyberjaya used a key and access card provided by his girlfriend to enter the apartment, says Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan. He said the girlfriend lived in the same unit as the victim, and had returned to her hometown after exams ended. 'The suspect took advantage of the victim being alone in the apartment while she was waiting to sit her final paper. Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara. 'He had previously stayed overnight at the unit several times, so he was familiar with the place and saw his opportunity on the night of June 24,' Utusan Malaysia quoted Hussein as saying. After allegedly assaulting and killing her, the unemployed suspect is said to have robbed her, taking her mobile phone, laptop, and ATM card that he used to spend RM200. Some of the stolen items were later recovered, while others were believed to have been discarded, Hussein said. Hussein said four people have been detained in connection with the murder – the main suspect, the victim's housemate, a woman believed to be the suspect's friend, and another man who knew the victim but lived in a separate apartment block. All of them have been remanded for seven days. Hussein said police had also recorded statements from two other housemates and would be calling another one for questioning. Another person, currently in jail, is being probed for allegedly receiving some of the victim's belongings, although he is not believed to be directly involved in the murder, Hussein said. 'We believe we will complete (the investigation) soon. With the arrest of the main suspect and the others, the case is considered resolved,' Hussein said. The victim, University of Cyberjaya student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, was found dead in her condominium unit by a friend at about 10am on June 24. An autopsy identified her cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head. Police said there were no signs that her residence had been broken into, and that she had not suffered injuries consistent with rape.

Over 1,100 wild animals seized in crackdown on poaching and trafficking

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,118 wild animals were seized through Op Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK) by the federal police Wildlife Crime Control Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence (WCB/PSK) throughout 2023 and this year. A spokesman from the bureau said the seizures involved various species believed to be illegally traded or used in illegal hunting activities. "A total of 735 animals were seized in 2023, with a seizure value of RM8,087,100, while in 2024, a total of 383 animals were seized, valued at RM6,309,290.20," he said. He said that over the two-year period, a total of 89 people had been arrested, comprising 71 men and 18 women, comprising locals and foreigners from Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Vietnam. "In 2023, the arrests involved 34 men and five women, including Malaysians and seven Indonesians, while the following year saw the arrests of 28 men and 10 local women, along with several foreigners. "Among the items seized were five firearm barrels, 78 rounds of ammunition, and 30 cages believed to be used in hunting and wildlife trafficking," he said. He said statistics showed that wildlife poaching and smuggling activities remain rampant and have not shown any signs of decline. "We believe many of these cases are orchestrated by local residents who rely on forest products as a source of illegal income. "Operations will be intensified with the cooperation of various enforcement agencies to ensure that national treasures are not further looted by syndicates and poachers. "The WCB/PSK Bureau will continue to play a role in identifying syndicate networks and taking strict action against those involved," he added.

Muda demands independent probe, action over alleged police force at anti-corruption rally

She pointed out that the reported alleged aggressive actions by certain police officers were not sanctioned orders but appeared to be independent actions. Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz SHAH ALAM - Muda acting president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz has called for independent investigations and disciplinary actions in response to allegations of excessive force used by authorities during the recent Himpunan Aman Rakyat 2.0 protest. Amira emphasised that the right to peaceful assembly is enshrined in Malaysia's Federal Constitution and must be upheld by all entities, including the government and law enforcement agencies. The anti-corruption protest, held last Saturday, took a contentious turn after a student activist was allegedly manhandled and arrested without clear justification. "I must stress that the right to peacefully assemble is a constitutional right. "This right should not be encroached upon by anyone, be it the current government, the police, or any other body claiming to act against peaceful assembly. "The aggression towards student activists at Himpunan 2.0 is utterly unacceptable," she told Sinar Daily when met at Karangkraf headquarters. Amira further stressed the need for accountability regarding the incident. She pointed out that the reported alleged aggressive actions by certain police officers were not sanctioned orders but appeared to be independent actions. "There needs to be an independent investigation into the officer involved. Disciplinary action must be taken to demonstrate that the government is serious about upholding the people's right to assemble. "This also serves as a warning to other officers that such aggression will not be tolerated under Malaysian law," she added. Drawing from her extensive experience participating in protests, Amira expressed concern over the persistent targeting of peaceful assemblies in Malaysia. "Ever since I started my journey as a student activist, I've joined multiple protests. This is a right enshrined in our Federal Constitution, yet organisers and attendees of peaceful assemblies are often questioned, detained or threatened by authorities," she said. Amira added that in the past, student activists were even threatened by their universities, creating a culture of fear that stifiles the exercise of constitutional rights. Amira also praised the Federal Court's recent decision declaring Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act unconstitutional. She described the ruling as a major victory for Malaysians and urged for its principles to be implemented at all levels, including enforcement. "This decision is a huge win for Malaysians. This is something that we should ensure is upheld not just at the court but also at the enforcement level," she said. The anti-corruption protest, held last Saturday, took a contentious turn after a student activist was allegedly manhandled and arrested without clear justification. The incident has drawn criticism from activists and rights groups, who say it reflects a troubling pattern of intimidation and abuse of power within Malaysia's enforcement agencies. These allegations stand in contrast to police statements claiming that their actions during the rally were fair and justified, further stoking public concern.
