Three held in hostel murder
It is believed that the suspects, aged 19 and 20, knew Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, who was found dead in a students' accommodation in Cyberjaya on Thursday.
Sepang OCPD Asst Comm Norhizam Bahaman said a man and two women were arrested in Johor Baru, Johor, and Gemencheh, Negri Sembilan.
'They were detained within 48 hours of a police report lodged on the case,' he said when contacted.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days until July 3.
As of Thursday, a total of 14 people have had their statements recorded, including the deceased's roommates and a lecturer.
Maniishapriet, a physiotherapy student from Kuching, was staying with five other students but they had returned home for the holidays.
She was thus alone at the hostel as she was preparing for an upcoming examination.
A post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Her ATM card, a laptop, mobile phone and cash were among the belongings found missing.
Police have detected five or six 'suspicious' bank transactions made in the Klang Valley shortly after she was found dead.
The Higher Education Ministry, in a statement on Thursday, said that all public and private higher education institutes must abide by the SOP on security and student welfare.
Compliance is imperative to ensure protection for all students under their responsibility, it said.
Messages of condolences and grief have flooded social media, posted by ordinary Malaysians as well as political leaders.

Over 1,100 wild animals seized in crackdown on poaching and trafficking
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,118 wild animals were seized through Op Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK) by the federal police Wildlife Crime Control Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence (WCB/PSK) throughout 2023 and this year. A spokesman from the bureau said the seizures involved various species believed to be illegally traded or used in illegal hunting activities. "A total of 735 animals were seized in 2023, with a seizure value of RM8,087,100, while in 2024, a total of 383 animals were seized, valued at RM6,309,290.20," he said. He said that over the two-year period, a total of 89 people had been arrested, comprising 71 men and 18 women, comprising locals and foreigners from Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Vietnam. "In 2023, the arrests involved 34 men and five women, including Malaysians and seven Indonesians, while the following year saw the arrests of 28 men and 10 local women, along with several foreigners. "Among the items seized were five firearm barrels, 78 rounds of ammunition, and 30 cages believed to be used in hunting and wildlife trafficking," he said. He said statistics showed that wildlife poaching and smuggling activities remain rampant and have not shown any signs of decline. "We believe many of these cases are orchestrated by local residents who rely on forest products as a source of illegal income. "Operations will be intensified with the cooperation of various enforcement agencies to ensure that national treasures are not further looted by syndicates and poachers. "The WCB/PSK Bureau will continue to play a role in identifying syndicate networks and taking strict action against those involved," he added.

"I must stress that the right to peacefully assemble is a constitutional right. "This right should not be encroached upon by anyone, be it the current government, the police, or any other body claiming to act against peaceful assembly.
