VM2026 Promotional Efforts Focus On High-Value Tourists, Says Tiong
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will continue to focus its advertising and promotional efforts on attracting high-value tourists while maintaining initiatives for volume tourism under the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) campaign, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said claims that his ministry was solely focusing on potential tourists from China were inaccurate, stressing that efforts to attract international visitors also involved various other countries.
He added that a comparison of foreign tourist arrivals between January and July 2024 and 2025 for 10 countries showed a significant increase.
'Tourist arrivals from Singapore in 2025 rose by 25.5 per cent to 10,288,256, compared with 8,397,886 in 2024; Indonesia increased by 8.2 per cent to 2,197,288 from 2,031,111; China grew by 35.6 per cent to 2,178,857 from 1,607,413; and India recorded a 26.6 per cent rise to 807,664 from 638,109.
'We are not only focused on promoting the country's tourism to China; we also aim to attract high-end and high-spending tourists,' he said when winding up the debate on the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for his ministry.
Tiong said all advertising and promotional efforts for VM2026 had been strategically planned and implemented across major markets, despite a lack of allocation.
In this regard, he urged all parties, including Members of Parliament, to support efforts to promote the country's tourism and refrain from politicising or sensationalising the initiative.
At the same time, he said the Ministry of Arts, Tourism and Culture (MOTAC) continued to focus on all tourism segments, including Muslim-friendly tourism, which offered significant potential.
He said MOTAC, through the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), was committed to developing and promoting Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality (MFTH), highlighting Quran-based tourism with main attractions such as the Nasyrul Quran Complex in Putrajaya and Yayasan Restu in Shah Alam, Selangor.

TH rebranding becoming another racial tensions flashpoint
A rebranding exercise by Tabung Haji is fast becoming another flashpoint for racial tensions amid allegations that non-Muslim companies had been appointed by the pilgrimage fund. PAS is using the issue to paint a picture that funds deposited by Muslims hoping to go on the haj are being misused and channelled inappropriately to non-Muslims, and that bumiputera companies were being sidelined.

ASEAN's ESG Principles Must Go Beyond Corporate Metrics
GENERAL Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof delivers his special remarks during the ASEAN Law Forum 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- ASEAN's pursuit of energy transition, sustainable water management and climate-resilient infrastructure must be guided by environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles that extend beyond corporate metrics, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said. He said ESG should not be seen merely as a reporting tool for companies, but as a framework that shapes government regulations, institutional enforcement and market behaviour. 'ESG must be more than a corporate metric. It should guide how governments design regulations, how institutions enforce standards and how markets reward responsible behaviour,' he said when delivering his speech at the ASEAN Law Forum 2025 here today. Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran, Secretary Of The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Anna Joubin-Bret, Timor-Leste Minister of Justice Sérgio de Jesus Fernandes da Costa Hornai and Laos Vice Minister of Justice Ketsana Phommachanh. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said ASEAN needs governance systems that match climate ambitions, honour social protection and demand accountability. 'To succeed, we need governance systems that match our climate ambitions, honour social protection, and demand accountability. This requires justice systems and dispute resolution mechanisms that are accessible, efficient and fair,' he said. He welcomed the inclusion of ESG disputes in the forum's agenda, describing it as a timely platform for ASEAN to strengthen arbitration capacity within global supply chains. 'I am pleased that this forum will discuss ESG Disputes and Arbitration in Global Supply Chains. It is a timely platform for us to explore due diligence, strengthen arbitration capacity and equip ASEAN to navigate the evolving nexus of trade, law and sustainability,' he said. On the broader theme of justice, Fadillah underlined that a 'just transition' in the energy sector must be treated as non-negotiable, ensuring fairness and inclusivity in economic and environmental reforms.

National Artificial Intelligence Action Plan near completion, says Gobind
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Artificial Intelligence Action Plan, providing a clear governance structure on the technology, is being finalised, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the plan will look into maintaining a balance between security and privacy. According to the minister, it will be based on three principles – transparency and accountability, privacy-by-design and security-by-design, and also retaining a human touch. "Each artificial intelligence model must be auditable clearly, including who is the party responsible if there are violations or misuse." "Privacy-by-design and security-by-design must also be considered from the algorithm design stage to protect personal data, and not added as an afterthought." "At the same time, artificial intelligence cannot be given absolute power yet. A human touch must be retained to avoid critical mistakes, discriminations or bias," he said during question time on Wednesday (Aug 20). The minister added that the plan will also take into account legal aspects including the Personal Data Protection Act and the Cybersecurity Act. As Asean chair, Gobind said Malaysia is spearheading the formation of the Asean AI Safety Network to ensure the technology can be implemented in a safe and responsible manner. This includes the formation of a regional artificial intelligence safety framework, drafting artificial intelligence safety standards, capacity building, promoting safe and responsible practices alongside the formation of a multi-stakeholder working group to explore safe usage across fields like healthcare and agriculture. "At the same time, Malaysia is also spearheading efforts to prepare the Asean Cybersecurity Cooperation Strategy 2026-2030 which takes into account cybersecurity challenges posed by artificial intelligence," he said. He added that Malaysia's stance is clear in wanting to ensure the technology is used to enhance cybersecurity, protect privacy rights and build trust. "We are committed to ensuring it is not just used as a technology but a responsibility that is preserved ethically, safe and human-centric," he said. He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodi who asked about measures to ensure artificial intelligence usage in cybersecurity complies with ethical principles and privacy.
