Man admits killing mother and daughter in M4 motorway crash after his Tesla records key evidence
Firas Zeineddine pleaded guilty at Swindon Crown Court on Wednesday to two charges of causing death by careless driving after the multi-vehicle crash on 20 October 2023.
Cheryl Woods, aged 61, and her 40-year-old daughter Sarha Smith – both of Caerphilly – were killed in the crash on the M4 between Chippenham and Bath.
Zeineddine – a 46-year-old from Keynsham, near Bristol – had originally been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving but admitted the lesser charges.
Edward Culver, prosecuting, said after consideration that the pleas were acceptable, and that the Crown Prosecution Service would therefore not be seeking a trial.
Judge Jason Taylor KC told the court: 'The reality is that a lot of the evidence comes from the defendant's own car and the Tesla was recording from multiple cameras.'
Zeineddine is now due to be sentenced on 28 April, with the judge ordering the preparation of pre-sentence reports.
At the time of their deaths, the women were described as devoted mothers and grandmothers in a tribute issued by their family.
The statement, released via Wiltshire Police, said: 'Cheryl Woods, cherished by those in her life, fulfilled the roles of a loving mother, doting grandmother, cherished sister, and a dear friend.
'Her selflessness was a defining trait, consistently prioritising her family's well-being over her own, and she took immense pride in her Welsh heritage while nurturing a deep love for nature.
'Sarha Smith, in the footsteps of her mother, unselfishly devoted herself to her family's needs ahead of her own.
'She was not only a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, but her absence leaves a void for those who relied on her radiant presence.
'Her legacy lives on through her six daughters, who will forever hold her memory close and strive to honour her with their efforts.'

'Greedy' National Crime Agency officer jailed after stealing £4.4 million in bitcoin from dark web drug dealer a 'first of its kind case', specialist prosecutor tells Mail podcast
A former National Crime Agency employee has 'destroyed his good life and career' after being jailed for stealing 50 Bitcoin from a dark web drug dealer, a prosecutor has told an exclusive Mail podcast. Paul Chowles, 42, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for stealing Bitcoin now worth £4.4 million from a drug dealer who was under investigation in 2017. Drug dealer Thomas White, who operated a dark web marketplace known as 'Silk Road 2.0' from his Liverpool home, alerted police to Chowles after telling investigators that proceeds from his criminal enterprise had gone missing. Chowles's theft went undetected for five years as he used his expertise in cybercrime to conceal his ill-gotten gains. Speaking to the Mail's Trial Plus podcast, specialist prosecutor Alex Johnson, who worked for the Crown Prosecution Service against Chowles, described why the case is truly 'a first of its kind.' Johnson said: 'When the Bitcoin was stolen in 2017, it was worth around £59,000. During the investigation, the value of Bitcoin exploded. 'The stolen Bitcoin would now be worth in excess of £4 million. An interesting aspect of the case was that Chowles was able to spend more money than he had stolen because the value of it went up during the time it was in his possession. 'Chowles was extremely calculated in the way he dealt with the stolen Bitcoin. He moved it into a system on the dark web called the Bitcoin fog. 'It was a way criminals could effectively wash dirty Bitcoin and send it back to themselves as clean Bitcoin. 'Merseyside police had to carry out an extremely diligent investigation to locate the Bitcoin, including hiring an expert to locate every transaction within the fog… this showed the Bitcoin being transferred into an account which could be linked unequivocally to Chowles.' Chowles was not only strategic in concealing the Bitcoin's transfer, but also careful in how he spent the stolen money. He avoided 'flashy' purchases, using his newfound wealth to buy groceries and home supplies. 'Chowles spent the money on fairly routine things', Johnson told the podcast. 'Working through his bank statements showed purchases at Asda, Sainsburys, Screw Fix and visits to local pubs and restaurants. 'He was careful – no holidays to the Bahamas or Ferraris or anything like that. Just day to day spending. 'Chowles used the stolen Bitcoin for more than 900 transactions and was able to carry out debit card and bank transfers of just under £80,000.' The specialist prosecutor emphasised that the lengthy prison sentence sends a strong message to potential Bitcoin criminals. 'At the end of the day, Chowles is a greedy and dishonest officer who decided he would breach public trust and steal something he should have been protecting', Johnson said. 'He's a family man. He lives with his partner… he really has destroyed what was a good career and a good life. 'I think for him to go to prison at this stage of his life must be real deterrent for anyboy else who might be looking at what's happened and considering doing the same thing.' Chowles was able to get hold of White's Bitcoin by accessing one of several USB drives containing the digital currency that had been seized from White's address. White operated online under the alias, 'Dread Pirate Roberts', a reference to the 1987 fantasy film The Princess Bride. In the film, the name Dread Pirate Roberts is passed down through generations of fearsome pirates, when their last leader retires. The USB drive containing the Bitcoin was titled 'Dread Pirate Roberts retirement fund', which led Johnson to make an amusing observation. 'Chowles considered this his retirement fund – and in doing so, became the new Dread Pirate Roberts!'

The victims were brutally attacked Friday night in downtown Cincinnati after being swarmed by the violent crowd, video of the horrific attack showed. A man in a white t-shirt is apparently shoved to ground by two men and repeatedly beaten as other members of the crowd jeer and join in. The gang batters the man for nearly a minute as he lay in the middle of the street, seemingly stepping on his head multiple times. When the barrage of attacks temporarily stops, he is seen attempting to stand - but immediately fell over in apparent disorientation. One attacker yelled out 'my man's drunk'. A woman in a black dress rushes to his aid, but is attacked by the crowd, suffering two blows to the face. The impact caused her to fall, with her head slamming the pavement. She became unconscious as blood spewed from her mouth. Musk, apparently frustrated by the heinous act of violence, took to his social media platform X to question what he suggested was a lack of response to the incident. 'Why zero stories?' the Tesla CEO asked Sunday, retweeting a post from the End Wokeness X account alleging that the attack wasn't being covered by America's major news outlets. The carnage left at least two people, the unidentified male and female victim, injured. A good Samaritan rushed them to a local hospital in the aftermath, WKRC reported. Their conditions remain unclear as cops work to identify and arrest all of those involved. Video obtained by WKRC appears to show the moments leading up to the attack. The man in the white t-shirt appears to be talking with the group, when he suddenly slaps a man in a red t-shirt. It also shows another man being targeted by the unruly mob. Investigators have already identified four to five suspects believed to have participated in the 'savage attack', police union president Ken Kober told The Cincinnati Enquirer. He said officers are continuing investigate tips as they try to identify the remaining suspects. Police have not yet announced any arrests in connection to the fight, but Kober insists officials are 'doing everything they can'. 'These investigators have been working around the clock to identify everybody that's involved, to be able to locate these people, to be able to interview them, to be able to get a true picture of exactly what occurred,' he told WKRC. Investigators have also received tips on some of the attackers' identities, Kober said. 'I would ask... that the public play a part in this, because stuff like this shouldn't happen in our city, but when it does, we need people to step forward, that way we can bring these people to justice.' Kober argued there is 'no place in society' for the violence displayed Friday night and, in separate remarks to WLWT, called the brawl 'disgusting'. 'What's equally disgusting is those who chose to watch and record instead of calling 911, attempting to defuse the situation or render aid.' The central business district and riverfront area where the assault took place has seen a 25 percent increase in violence compared to last year, according to Cincinnati police data published July 21. The data also shows that there were 12 aggravated assaults in the city between January 1 through July 21, compared to 16 during the same time period last year. 'I am in complete disgust waking up to the viral video many of you have now seen,' Cincinnati police Chief Teresa Theetge said on Saturday, after mayoral candidate and Vice President JD Vance's half brother reposted the video - arguing that the current administration is not doing enough to address crime in the city. 'The behavior is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable,' she continued, vowing that investigators will work 'diligently to identify every individual involved in causing harm.'
