China's record-breaking 'Black Myth: Wukong' game gets a sequel

A filepic of people waiting in queue to play the 'Black Myth: Wukong' video game at Gamescom 2023. The game's developer announced a sequel to 'Wukong' at this year's Gamescom. — Reuters Game Science, the startup behind one of last year's biggest new role-playing games, is working on a successor in the series, Black Myth: Zhong Kui . Introduced at the Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, a new teaser trailer showcases Game Science's signature penchant for high-fidelity graphics and taps Chinese folklore again to add a daunting new character to the fantasy universe initiated by Black Myth: Wukong a year ago. Zhong, much like Wukong before him, is a god from ancient myths, with a red beard, dark skin and glowing eyes. The project is still "little more than an empty folder at this stage,' Tencent Holdings Ltd-backed Game Science wrote on its website for the new game. But the company wanted to update fans after the blockbuster debut of Wukong a year earlier. That game became China's biggest cultural export in years and set new highs for popularity of action role-playing games, even triggering a surge in tourism to historic sites featured in its meticulously designed environments. Beyond announcing the project, Game Science added that Wukong 's westward journey story is not yet done, suggesting it will deliver additional content for the first game. The company will retain much of what made the 2024 game such a hit, staying within the action role-playing genre, though it offered no timeline for when it intends to deliver any further updates or downloadable content. In the year since Black Myth: Wukong shook up the big-budget games industry, other Chinese game developers have followed suit. Released in July, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is one example, exhibiting similar gameplay and a focus on high-end graphics, though it has received mixed reviews on PC distribution platform Steam. – Bloomberg

Liu Yifei & Xiao Zhan To Film In Malaysia For Upcoming Movie?

Malaysia has been the filming location for many international projects, including the Hollywood film 'Worth The Wait'. Now, reports are saying that another blockbuster movie will be filmed in Malaysia, starring Chinese stars Liu Yifei (刘亦菲) and Xiao Zhan (肖战). Earlier this week, Chinese social media was buzzing with rumours that the two stars will be part of an upcoming blockbuster produced by Hong Kong director Tsui Hark (徐克). According to reports, the international production, tentatively named 'Shih, Queen Of The Sea', is an epic about the female Chinese pirate Shih Yang. The project has a reported budget of 500 million RMB (approximately RM294 million), sparking a lot of interest from the public. New Zealand director Anthony McCarten will helm the director's chair, on top of taking charge of the script. Besides Liu Yifei and Xiao Zhan, Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) and Taiwanese actress Shu Qi (舒淇) are also reportedly in talks to join the project, adding to the already star-studded cast. The movie will allegedly be filmed in various locations, including China and Malaysia. Filming is scheduled to start in early September. According to reports, 'Shih, Queen Of The Sea' will be based on real historical events and explore Chinese pirate culture. Liu Yifei is expected to play Shih Yang, while Xiao Zhan will likely play her husband. Noting Anthony McCarten's many successful biopics, like 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'The Darkest Hour', film buffs are looking forward to this new project and what the film has to offer. However, at present, nothing has been set in place and neither Liu Yifei nor Xiao Zhan's have confirmed the rumours. News outlets reported that the signing for the film will take place until 25th August (Monday), so any official announcement will likely happen after this date. Nevertheless, netizens are already looking forward to the film and Liu Yifei and Xiao Zhan's on-screen chemistry. We in Malaysia are also looking forward to welcoming the star-studded cast to film on our shores. What are your thoughts about this? Sources: United Daily, Xuan, Deadline

Actress Ada Choi says husband Max Zhang had a heart attack in Singapore

Ada Choi and Max Zhang married in 2008 and have three children aged five to 14. Photo: Ada Choi/Weibo Hong Kong actress Ada Choi revealed that her husband, Chinese actor Max Zhang, suffered a heart attack while the family was vacationing in Singapore. Zhang disclosed in the first episode of Chinese reality show Call Me By Fire 2025 , released on Aug 9, that he almost died while he was overseas with his family on April 17. 'I felt pain, had difficulty breathing and was covered in cold sweat,' Zhang told Korean-American singer-actor Lee Seung-hyun on the show about the incident. 'I could not say anything at that time and felt like I was falling into an abyss.' Zhang and Choi, both 51, married in 2008 and have three children aged five to 14. He is known for starring in martial arts films such as SPL II: A Time For Consequences (2015) and Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (2018). Zhang recalled on the show that Choi and their children were about 10m away, and were about to board a duck boat for a tour. 'I told myself I couldn't die here as I was overseas,' he said. 'I held on and told myself not to collapse.' He saw a doctor soon after he returned to Hong Kong. The doctor told him he could have died during the heart attack, Zhang said. Choi was asked about the incident while attending the lensing ceremony for TV drama Behind The Queens on Aug 17. 'He experienced two episodes of discomfort in March and went to see a doctor, who performed an electrocardiogram test,' Choi said. 'The report showed that he was fine.' She said the family then travelled to Singapore in April. 'He suddenly couldn't breathe, couldn't move, couldn't speak and had to sit down. I left him behind and proceeded with the duck tour, thinking he had caught a cold.' Choi said she realised later that something was wrong when she returned and saw his face turning pale, although he said he felt fine after a while. 'While we chatted the next morning, he said tearfully that at the moment the day before, he was looking at the four of us and felt like he was about to pass out and might never see us again. He had to get back up and he did,' she recounted. 'He cried while he was talking and I had never seen him like that before.' Choi accompanied her husband for the health screening in Hong Kong. A computed tomography scan found that about 80% of his blood vessels were blocked, and he had to undergo an angioplasty to insert stents immediately. 'I felt so apologetic when I learnt about his condition and cried on my knees, wondering how I could be such a wife,' Choi said. 'Knowing that we could be separated forever in an instant, I hugged him. I would have gone crazy if something had happened to him.' She said the whole family has grown closer as a result of this incident and now pays more attention to exercise, adding that Zhang has also cut down on oily food. 'We have to count our blessings,' Choi said. 'I almost became a widow, and he almost died in a foreign land.' – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
