New Afrikaans birthday song campaign celebrates 100 years of the language
Afrikaans celebrated its 100th anniversary as a national language on 8 May.
In light of this, a 'proudly Afrikaans' insurance company is questioning if it's time for another version of 'Veels Geluk, Liewe Maatjie'.
They are launching a nationwide campaign to create a brand-new Afrikaans birthday song.
'Something memorable, meaningful, and proudly local. A song that can be sung at every birthday, by anyone who loves Afrikaans.,' said Morné van Emmenes, head of marketing at Virseker.
'We're inviting all South Africans to help write it. Whether you're a poet, rapper, student, singer, or just someone who loves the language – share your lyrics, ideas, audio, videos or even voice notes. The only rule? It must be proudly and powerfully Afrikaans,' said Van Emmenes.
Participants have the chance to win hampers and shopping vouchers.
A panel of iconic artists – including Sonja Heroldt, Early B, Karen Zoid and Anton Goosen – will help decide which ideas will inspire the final version.

Africa Day celebration focuses on culture
Acting, singing and dancing were showcased at Tolomane Mnyayiza Youth Development Centre's Africa Day celebration in Boboyi on Monday this week. The assistant director of regional communication of the Government Communication Information System, Khanyiso Seyisi, said the department joined in because the institution focuses on upskilling students, especially the youth. Also, he added the event embraced the culture and the resilience of Africans who are known for their strength. 'We want the youth to walk in the footsteps of our forefathers and to carry our culture and beliefs, and link those with our current lifestyle.' A student at the centre, Nkazimulo Gcaba, said that they had planned a lot of activities. 'We want to showcase our history. Africa Day reminds us and teaches us to appreciate what our leaders fought for.' Another student, Minenhle Mbuyeleni, said that for the youth, the day was enlightening, as it also showed where they come from as Africans. 'It reminds us that we are important. It's also a huge opportunity for the youth because we are exposed to things that we didn't know about.' Mbuyeleni who is studying to be a professional cook said it's her dream job. 'One day, I will open my own restaurant and I will have a story to tell.' This is the fifth time the Gypsy Jokers Motorcycle Club is hosting this jol in eMalahleni. Gates open at 08:00 and entry is R100, including a badge. Award-winning Nhlazatje author champions indigenous storytelling
A renowned Mpumalanga author, Jabulane Ncongwane's (63) latest release 'Live Litawutsini', which means 'what will the world say', is catching the attention of many readers. It explores the themes of teenage pregnancy, secret love affairs and gender-based violence, which has become a pandemic. Ncongwane said what sets him apart from other authors is that he has a unique approach to storytelling. 'My work is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking, tackling complex issues that affect society today, showing that we can dream despite whatever setbacks we have suffered,' he said. 'Live Litawutsini' received the 2023 Book Behind the Author in Indigenous Language Award for a Siswati novel. 'I live by the words, 'A nation that does not read its language, is doomed.' I am passionate about storytelling, which is evident in my writing and commitment to promoting the Siswati language and culture.' Ncongwane said his journey as an author has not been without its challenges. 'I have spoken on many platforms about the financial struggles of being a writer in an indigenous language, where awards and recognition often come without financial compensation. Despite these challenges, I remain dedicated to my craft, driven by my passion for storytelling and the desire to share my message with the world,' Ncongwane said.
