Danny Dyer recalls the heartbreaking moment his father told him he 'wasn't allowed' to hold his hand anymore as he details their past fractured relationship

Daily Mail26-04-2025

He may be TV's hard man, but Danny Dyer reveals he had a rocky start in life, as he recalled his father's harsh words to him and details his shock double life.
The actor, 47, gets a grilling in ITV 's new show The Assembly, which sees a celebrity face questions from a group of autistic, neurodivergent and learning disabled people, forcing them to cast aside their media training, with no topic off limits.
Opening up on his previously fractured relationship with his father Anthony on the show, Danny recalled the heartbreaking childhood moment his father told him he 'wasn't allowed' to hold his hand anymore.
He shared: 'My dad just wasn't a very good dad. He didn't know how to do it. He told me when I wasn't allowed to hold his hand anymore. I was trying to cross the road, and I went to hold his hand, and he went, 'No, we don't do that anymore'.'
The former EastEnders actor, 47, who is now a proud father to daughters, Dani, 28, and Sunni, 18, along with son, Arty, 11 says he wouldn't be able to sleep at night if he didn't have a relationship with his offspring.
He continued: 'I was like, s**t. I don't understand how men put their head on the pillow knowing that they have children out there that they just don't have a relationship with – I couldn't do it.'
'I caused quite a lot of pain, to my children – the stuff I was getting up to, just being vacant, and not engaging, just not being available.
'I realised later on, wow, I am going to do everything in my power to be... it's not about money - you could live in a cardboard box. You have to express yourself. It's about love, and what children need.
'This just need stability and affection and [to] feel like they're loved, that's it. When you haven't got that, it's a pretty tough thing.'
Meanwhile on the show, the TV star opened up on his discovery that his dad was leading a secret life away from his family.
Danny shared: 'My dad was living two lives, so he was sort of raising us and then I always remember on Christmas Day, he would disappear for a few hours, so what he was doing was going across London to his other family, and he had two daughters,' says the star.
'Just think about that – crazy. How could you do that? When my mum found out my sister was nine months old or something, so it was a real moment of clarity. How the fuck did he do that by the way?
Discussing if he is in contact with his estranged father now, The Football Factory favourite, claims, 'I am very close to my dad now because again, he deserved another shot, and if there is still no relationship, it's their loss, because you are an incredible human-being.'

Danny previously spoke of his father in 2021, as he revealed his real name is actually Danial Dyer - because his father misspelt Daniel on his birth certificate when he was 'off his nut'.
The star thinks his dad Antony was 'battered' when he was given the responsibility of filling in his birth certificate, and as a result his moniker was accidentally set as Danial rather than the conventional spelling of Daniel.
Speaking on his and daughter Dani's Sorted with the Dyers podcast, he said: 'I did change my name, because my name is Danial. My old dad, and I love him very much, is old school.
'I was born in the 70s so men didn't really get involved in much then. Back in the day, my mum would go, "I'm going into labour," and he'd be up the boozer and go, "What time are you going to be home?".'
He continued: 'She went into labour and gave birth. He got up there, obviously off his nut, and he got to do the important thing, the birth certificate, which I think you have to sign.
'He agreed to the name Daniel but he spelt it Danial - D-A-N-I-A-L. It could've been a mix of things - that he was battered, that he doesn't spell. It could've been a bit of both.'
The former soap star - who played Mick Carter on the BBC One show - admitted he had always planned to change his name to Danny anyway.
He said: 'As I got into the acting years I sort of decided ... I changed it. It was always going to be Danny. I thought Danny was a better name, it has a better ring to it.'
Dyer was born in Custom House, East London, in 1977 and sadly his parents split up when he was just aged nine.

Triple Coronation Street exit shock as end of an era is confirmed

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video For 25 years Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) has been a fixture in Coronation Street. The popular character has been through a huge amount of drama in that time, including raising two sons, being mother hen to numerous lodgers at number 11, enjoying/enduring a rivalry with Gail Platt (Helen Worth) and being married to a killer. But with Sue Cleaver having taken the decision to 'Embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly' by moving on from the soap, Eileen's exit is fast approaching. Her final storyline saw the return of Katy Cavanagh as Eileen's sister Julie Carp. It was soon revealed that Julie was dealing with a terminal illness and didn't have long to live, and viewers have recently seen the sad scenes where Eileen returned to her sister with a cup of tea while they were on a day out to a beauty spot, only to find that Julie had died while she was gone. Julie's funeral brought another returnee in the form of Ryan Thomas as Eileen's son Jason. And in upcoming episodes we'll see Jason make Eileen a tempting offer. He's been living in Thailand since he left Weatherfield, and he suggests that Eileen could come back with him and be his business partner. Eileen's immediate reaction is that her partner, George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley), would never want to move to Thailand. Eileen has been struggling with her feelings for George recently, at one moment not sure she loves him but the next moment saying that she wants her future to be with him. Julie certainly thought that Eileen was selling herself short by settling for a relationship with George. But it seems that her decision about whether to accept Jason's offer hinges on George and he surprises her, saying that he's prepared to move his life to the other side of the world to be with her. In fact he's booked them a holiday to Thailand – leaving the very next day – so they can see if life there would suit them. Eileen's other son, Todd (Gareth Pierce) has recently embarked on a relationship with a man called Theo (James Cartwright), who's been struggling with his sexuality. Theo's daughter Millie has been staying at Eileen's briefly, and when she has to go home she tells Theo she wants him to move beck in with her and her mum. More Trending Theo replies that he wants to be with Todd and can't live a lie any more. His words give Eileen cause to reflect again about her feelings for George and whether she's settling for a relationship she's not really feeling. JoJo Siwa says Chris Hughes feels like family and her mother ‘adores' him

The two met in the ITV1 Celebrity Big Brother house, growing close during their time on the reality show, claiming their relationship was 'platonic'. Since leaving the house, they have been seen together and recently shared photographs of them together on Instagram, suggesting they are in a relationship. A post shared by JoJo Siwa (@itsjojosiwa) Siwa, 22, told Channel 4's Sunday Brunch: 'She (Siwa's mother) does love him. My parents think the absolute world of him and him and my dad are like best friends. 'Chris was actually telling me that yesterday they went to the spa together. They're literally best friends. 'Mum, she absolutely adores him. I love watching her watch us because I've never seen my mum so happy. 'It feels like we're a family. It feels like he's been in my family for however many years. It feels like they just all get along as well as I do. 'I think there will definitely be a lot more time spent here, and I think from him as well, a lot more time spent over there, but we both have families, you know, on either end.' The 22-year old singer is known for her songs Karma and Guilty Pleasure, which she released in 2024, while sports presenter Hughes, 32, appeared on the third season of the ITV reality TV series Love Island. Speaking about her decision to join Celebrity Big Brother, she said: 'I didn't even question a yes or no. I knew it wasn't even a question. It was an immediate yes. 'I think for me, growing up on reality TV, it almost feels like a little bit of home to me, and it just feels like it's just fun. 'And right before I went in, I told my mom, I was like, I think this is gonna be the best thing I've ever done. And she's like, what do you mean? And I was like, I don't know, something tells me, like for my personal, like for my life, it feels like it's gonna be the best thing I've ever done and by a landslide it has been. 'Being on Big Brother you're captured 24/7 so for people to just get to see the real me was something that I wasn't sure how to share, essentially on my own, I guess I wasn't brave enough to share it.' The Celebrity Big Brother final saw Coronation Street actor Jack P Shepherd crowned the winner. Siwa placed third on the ITV1 reality show while Hughes came sixth.

Molly-Mae Hague's Love Island 2019 audition tape is revealed for first time as she and Tommy Fury are branded one of show's success stories in 10 year anniversary special

Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury were included as one of Love Island's successful love stories during ITV's special 10-year anniversary episode on Sunday. The former Love Island star and the amateur boxer, both 26, met on the ITV2 dating show in 2019 and welcomed their daughter Bambi in 2023. In the summer of 2024 they shocked the nation with news of their split as Tommy has claimed his drinking became a problem in their relationship. However, after months of rumours they'd rekindled their romance, the pair finally went Instagram official last month with a loved-up family snap. And ITV wasted no time in branding the couple as one of their success stories with a celebratory clip of them to close Love Island: Decade Of Love. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Elsewhere in the show, Molly-Mae's 2019 audition tape was also shown for the first time, revealing some shock confessions about her love life before Tommy. As the episode turned to 'unseen audition clips', Molly was seen confessing that she had been described as 'too much' by her former love interests. In her audition clip she said: 'The last guy I was with literally told me I was too much for him to handle. What ever too much actually means.' The clip then switched to Molly auditioning for the show where she revealed the secrets to her iconic messy top bun. She said: 'I take the nozzle of the blow hairdryer, blow dry it through there and then a bit of hairspray. But it stays there anyway.' Molly and Tommy fell for each other in front of the nation during series five of Love Island, going on to welcome Bambi and then get engaged in 2023. But fans were shocked when Molly announced on Instagram last August that she and Tommy had split up after five years, with many suspecting he had been unfaithful. In a statement posted to her 8.5million Instagram followers, she confirmed the breakup, saying: 'I never imagined our story would end, especially not this way.' Tommy denied continued speculation about him cheating during a magazine interview, insisting any reports about him being with other women were 'complete and utter b*****ks.' The boxer, who's the half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, said the reason he and Molly ended their romance was down to his excessive drinking. He said: 'People go through different things in life. I'm 25 years old. I went through a lot and my breakup was in front of the whole world... 'Cheating was never a thing. You can ask Molly this yourself. It was the drink, and the drink is not a good thing.' The pair's split was branded a 'publicity stunt' by fans after they were filmed packing on the PDA at Manchester United footballer Luke Shaw 's Hogmanay party in Cheshire. And in May, Molly began taking to her Instagram Stories to re-introduce his presence more regularly on her social media account. In the picture, Tommy could be seen sharing a kiss with Molly and their toddler, Bambi, while they enjoyed ice lollies in the sunshine. The post comes after she revealed what really happened when they were spotted sharing a kiss as the clock struck midnight and 2025 began in the final installment of her Amazon Prime docuseries. After receiving a call from her manager Fran Britton to inform her of the video, Molly was left shaking as she exclaimed 'No, oh my God,' after watching the footage. The influencer explained: 'Basically, what's happened is I've attended a New Year's Eve party and a familiar someone showed up 10 minutes before the countdown and that was Tommy. 'Basically we shared a kiss at midnight and it would appear that someone has taken a video and sold it to the press.' She continued: 'It was just a moment that we shared and I can't really explain it, it kind of just happened. 'You think you're having a private, intimate moment and nothing is private even in a room of people you think you trust and you know, people like to make a quick buck.' Molly added: 'I'd love to know how much they did make, hope it was worth it. But karma always comes back around don't you think?' Watching the clip she exclaimed: 'Sh**e. Ahhh no. No my God what? I'm literally shaking.' As Fran asked her to explain what happened, Molly swore that the boxer wasn't supposed to at the party and showed up unexpectedly. She said: 'He turned up at 10 to 12. I swear he wasn't meant to be there. 'He messaged me saying "I am outside and I want to see in the New Year with you, I kid you not Fran he was there for eight minutes. He was literally not there. He wasn't there all night.' Since the kiss, Tommy has been seen leaving her Cheshire home and after sharing a family holiday in Dubai, Molly confirmed on her YouTube channel that the pair are 'figuring things out'.
