Maharashtra govt withdraws EWS quota in private medical colleges
PTI
Mumbai, July 31 (PTI) In a significant policy reversal, the Maharashtra government has withdrawn its earlier decision to implement the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation in private medical colleges.
The rollback was notified by the state Medical Education Department on Wednesday, with the government clarifying that the quota will be applicable only if the Central government and respective councils increase existing seats.
'For MBBS/BAMS/BDS/BHMS and BUMS courses, this reservation will be applicable only if the Central Government, respective councils increase existing seats. For courses other than MBBS/BDS/BAMS/BHMS and BUMS courses, the 10 per cent EWS reservation will be applicable on available seats," the Medical Education Department stated.
Last week, when the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell declared commencement of admissions for medical undergraduate (UG) courses, the information brochure indicated implementation of the 10 per cent EWS reservation in private medical colleges.
The move led to apprehension among students and parents as the quota decision meant drastically reducing the number of open category seats without increasing the intake of seats.
This is the second major rollback by the state government in the field of education in less than a month.
On June 29, the government withdrew two contentious GRs (resolutions) under the three-language formula amid protests by Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS against the purported 'imposition" of Hindi language for primary students. PTI PR NSK

'Let them sail': Russian lawmaker shrugs off Trump's nuclear sub threat
A senior Russian lawmaker has said that Russia has enough nuclear submarines at sea to handle any potential threat from the two US subs ordered into position by President Donald Trump, news agency PTI reported. Viktor Vodolatsky, a member of the Russian Parliament (Duma), told state news agency TASS that there is no need for a response from Russia to Trump's decision. "The number of Russian nuclear submarines in the world's oceans is significantly higher than the American ones, and the subs that US President Donald Trump ordered to be redirected to the appropriate regions have long been under their control,' he said. 'So no response from the Russian Federation to the American leader's statement about the submarines is required." Vodolatsky also said: 'Let the two US subs sail, they have been in the crosshairs for a long time now.' Trump orders US nuclear submarines on alert On Friday, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that he had ordered the movement of two US nuclear submarines to 'appropriate regions'. He said the decision was in response to what he described as 'extremely provocative statements' made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council. In his post, Trump wrote: 'Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev... I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that." Russian minister backs peaceful approach, warns against direct conflict Responding to comments made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a Fox News interview, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed the US position that a direct military clash with Russia must be avoided. 'We wholeheartedly concur with this position. Such shared understanding has been facilitated through constructive Russian-American dialogue,' Lavrov said. 'While Europeans are hysterically pushing for Ukraine's integration into NATO... Marco Rubio recently reaffirmed a responsible stance, explicitly stating that a direct military confrontation between the United States and Russia must be avoided," he said. Trump slams Medvedev, India and Russia In another post on Thursday, Trump attacked both India and Russia, calling them 'dead economies' and suggesting they could 'take their dead economies down together'. He also criticised Medvedev. 'Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way. Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President, to watch his words. He's entering very dangerous territory!' Trump said. In response, Medvedev dismissed Trump's remarks, saying they showed nervousness. 'If some words from the former president of Russia cause such a nervous reaction from the supposedly mighty president of the US, then Russia is doing everything right,' he wrote on Telegram. He also reminded Trump of Russia's Cold War-era nuclear capability, designed to retaliate even if the country's leadership were destroyed in a first strike. Mocking Trump's interest in pop culture, Medvedev added: 'He should remember his favourite films about 'The Walking Dead' and think about how dangerous a 'dead hand' can be, even one that doesn't exist in nature,' ending his post with a laughing emoji. Meghalaya govt orders probe into misappropriation of 4,000 MT coal
Shillong, Aug 2 (PTI) The Meghalaya government has ordered an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of over 4,000 metric tonnes (MT) of coal in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday. Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that instructions have been issued to the district authorities and the police to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. 'We have asked deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to investigate if there has been any misappropriation or illegal diversion of coal," the deputy chief minister told PTI. The directive comes close on the heels of a revelation by a High Court-appointed committee that over 4,000 metric tonnes of coal, already declared as extracted and inventoried, have vanished from two designated storage sites. The committee, in its latest report to the Meghalaya High Court, said the disappearance raises serious questions about the state's mechanism for monitoring coal stock and preventing illegal transportation. Tynsong said the government will take action if any wrongdoing is established. 'If there is anything wrong, we will proceed according to the law. Even if it requires us to approach the Supreme Court, we will do so," he added. The state's probe will focus on tracing both diesel and coal inventories, including movement, documentation, and field verification. A comprehensive report will be prepared and shared with the court in due course, an official said. PTI JOP BDC view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ayurveda Expert Shares Why Neem Is The Ultimate Monsoon Skin Fix
Last Updated: Known for its antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties, neem is the ultimate ingredient that can help treat all monsoon skin problems. The monsoon may bring welcome relief from the heat, but it also introduces a host of skin concerns, such as excess oil, fungal infections, breakouts, and irritation due to high humidity. Thankfully, nature offers a powerful solution in Neem, an age-old Ayurvedic remedy known for its antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. ' Neem is a versatile and time-tested herb that helps restore balance to the skin, especially in seasons like the monsoon when moisture and pollution aggravate common skin conditions," says Dr. Bhavana S. Gaitonde, Ayurveda expert at Himalaya Wellness Company. From acne control to dandruff defence, incorporating Neem into your daily routine can significantly reduce the seasonal toll on your skin and scalp. 1. Clarify Oily Skin with a Neem Face Pack Humidity often triggers excess sebum production and clogged pores. A neem face pack made with neem powder and water, rose water, or honey helps purify the skin, curb acne, and prevent future breakouts. Apply this clarifying mask 2–3 times a week to keep skin fresh and matte. 2. Soothe Rashes with Neem-Infused Bath Water Fungal infections, itching, and body rashes become common during the monsoon, especially in skin folds. Add neem to your bathwater by boiling its leaves and straining the water, or mix a few drops of pure neem oil into your bucket. This helps calm irritation and reduce bacterial growth. 3. Target Trouble Spots with Neem Oil Neem oil, when mixed with a carrier oil like coconut or almond oil, works wonders on pimples, mosquito bites, and other minor irritations. Apply directly using a cotton swab for antiseptic, anti-inflammatory action that speeds up healing and reduces redness. 4. Use Neem Water as a Natural Toner Pollution and humidity can lead to dullness and enlarged pores. Boil neem leaves, cool and strain the water, and use it as a toner after cleansing. This helps tighten pores, refresh skin, and acts as a natural antibacterial shield. 5. Detox Your Scalp with a Neem Hair Mask An oily scalp, dandruff, and hair fall often flare up in the monsoon. Mix neem powder with curd or water to create a scalp pack. Apply once a week before shampooing to control flaking, soothe itchiness, and strengthen roots for healthier, fuller hair. view comments First Published: August 02, 2025, 12:02 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
