Third Mumbai farmers foil land takeover bid, govt withdraws controversial notices
The farmers, under the banner of the MMRDA KSC Navnagar Virodhi Shetkari Samiti Raigad, accused the state of misusing the Agri Stack initiative—a digital land record and agriculture database scheme—to dispossess them of their ancestral land for the ambitious Karnala-Sai-Chirner New Town project, also dubbed 'Third Mumbai'.
Over 124 villages across Uran, Panvel and Pen talukas are opposing the proposed township, which they claim is being designed to benefit powerful builders and developers at the cost of local communities. 'The notices were a ploy to declare our lands abandoned and hand them over for urban development,' said Sudhakar Patil, president of the committee.
According to Patil, farmers began receiving show-cause notices from June 26, demanding an explanation for leaving land uncultivated for two years. The notices warned that failure to respond within four days would be interpreted as consent, and the government would proceed to take over the plots.
'This is nothing short of land grabbing,' Patil said. 'The government made no attempt to understand why the land wasn't cultivated—whether it was because of sea water ingress, mangrove growth, flooding, or declining fertility due to industrial pollution. Instead of helping us revive our soil, they want to hand it over to capitalists.'
After the farmers marched to the Uran tehsildar's office, the local administration was forced to backtrack. In a written communication to the farmers, Uran Tehsildar Uddhav Kadam confirmed that the notices had been withdrawn. 'The intent was to encourage participation in the Agri Stack scheme, which is meant to benefit farmers. However, there was a misunderstanding that it was a land acquisition move. Hence, we have cancelled the notices,' Kadam said.
The victory has boosted the morale of villagers who say they are already reeling under the impact of large-scale infrastructure projects such as CIDCO's NAINA scheme and the Navi Mumbai airport. 'We've lost homes, farms, and entire villages. Our houses have been declared illegal and demolished. Now they want to snatch away what little land we have left,' said Rupesh Patil, general secretary of the farmers' committee.
The farmers have vowed to continue their resistance against the New Town project, which they say threatens to erase rural communities in favour of real estate profits.

Jarange-Patil targets Maharashtra CM Fadnavis, claims he is trying to undermine Maratha leaders
Known for his strong criticism of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil Sunday intensified his attacks on the BJP leader. He accused Fadnavis of conspiring to undermine Maratha leaders and trying to create a rift between the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and the Maratha communities. 'I am giving an important message to the Maratha community from Ahilyanagar. Devendra Fadnavis is deliberately trying to finish off Maratha leaders and Maratha officials… They should all remain alert,' Jarange-Patil alleged at a press conference in Ahilyanagar. He said even Maratha officials are suffering at the hands of Fadnavis. 'I urge the Maratha community to stand by officials if they are harassed,' he said. Jarange-Patil said government officials are deliberately avoiding people with low incomes and Maratha who approach them for getting their official work done. 'They make life miserable for the poor, the Maratha and the Dalit Muslims,' he said. The activist said, 'Fadanvis is now claiming that he will fight on behalf of the OBC community. Then who will fight for the Marathas? Now even OBC community knows that he wants to ensure that OBC and Marathas keep quarrelling. Even the OBC communities know now that he is provoking them to resort to violence against the Maratha community. If violence indeed takes place, then Fadnavis should remember he will be responsible for it.' The activist stated that when OBC becomes a district guardian minister, the Marathas will suffer. 'When Marathas become district guardian minister, OBCs are not harassed.' As for the local self-government body elections, Jarange-Patil said, 'The Maratha community will take the call in this regard. However, our stand regarding reservation is similar. We want reservation through the OBC quota and not through any other category. On August 19, we will go to Mumbai to carry out our agitation there.' On Rahul Gandhi's allegation of vote theft, Jarange-Patil offered no comments.

Farmers to hoist tricolour in fields on Independence Day to protest Shaktipeeth Expressway
Farmers from 12 districts in Maharashtra will hoist the national flag in their fields on Independence Day as part of a unique protest against the proposed Shaktipeeth Expressway, which they claim will destroy fertile agricultural land. The campaign for the August 15 protest will carry the slogan 'The tricolour flutters in our field; Shaktipeeth has no place in our farmland,' sending a strong message to the State Government, Congress MLC Satej Patil said. The decision was taken at an online meeting of the Shaktipeeth Expressway Virodhi Sangharsh Samiti on Saturday (August 9, 2025), attended by farmers and public representatives from the affected districts, he said. Also read: Shaktipeeth Expressway sparks Statewide protests, political outcry in Maharashtra The Maharashtra cabinet in June this year approved the allocation of ₹20,787 crore for the ambitious 'Maharashtra Shaktipeeth Expressway,' which will pass through 12 districts, linking eastern Maharashtra with southern Konkan. The 802-km expressway is expected to cut the travel time between Nagpur and Goa from current 18 hours to eight hours, as per officials. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will implement the project, and HUDCO has sanctioned a loan of ₹12,000 crore for the acquisition of nearly 7,500 hectares of land, the officials earlier said. The expressway aims to link all 'Shaktipeeths' in the state and develop rural areas through tourism and connectivity, they added. The high-speed corridor will pass through the districts of Wardha, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Solapur, Sangli, Kolhapur and Sindhudurg. Mr. Patil said the protest move symbolises farmers' demand for 'freedom' from the project. He alleged the expressway's cost had risen from ₹86,000 crore to ₹1.06 lakh crore and urged the government to instead focus on road construction in underdeveloped areas and loan waivers for farmers. Farmer leader and former MP Raju Shetti said the protest was aimed at 'freeing the land' at a time when cultivable area in the country is shrinking. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Vinayak Raut claimed the expressway would benefit only contractors and politicians, while MLA Kailas Patil took a swipe at the chief minister, saying the project may be a 'dream' or 'cream' for him. The meeting also resolved to pass anti-expressway resolutions in gram sabhas on August 15 and to launch a signature campaign in villages, former MLA Ruturaj Patil said. He said the campaign would begin in 10 villages of Kolhapur South constituency in the coming days. The protest is part of a wider agitation, with farmers from the affected areas also expected to join the August 13 nationwide protest called by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha at Bindu Chowk in Kolhapur, Satej Patil said.
