Fairphone 6 official, gets expanded modular design with accessories

GSM Arena5 hours ago

Fairphone announced its latest sustainable smartphone with the Fairphone 6 aka the Fairphone (Gen. 6). It brings a few notable upgrades over its predecessor including a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset, a larger 4,415mAh battery and a new accessory system
This is still a phone that's built to last. Fairphone 6 is as easy to repair as ever, with the company supplying spare parts and video tutorials on how to replace all of the key components. Fairphone 6 is E-waste neutral, assembled in factories with fair labor conditions and boasts an excellent repairability rating from the EU's new energy efficiency label. Fairphone is also offering a five-year warranty and eight years of software support.
As for the specs, Fairphone 6 is built around a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED with FHD+ resolution and a 10-120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The panel is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i and features 1,400 nits peak brightness and a 32MP front-facing camera.
The smaller screen helped Fairphone 6 shed 19 grams of weight compared to Fairphone 5 and it's also shorter and narrower. Fairphone 6 is made from a matte composite body, and features IP55 ingress protection and is now drop resistant up to 1.5m.
The new bits this year are the accessories which can attach to the back of the phone. You'll need to remove two screws and you can then attach a card holder, lanyard or finger loop.
Also new for this year is the dedicated yellow switch on the side that turns on Moments – a digital detox mode where the UI turns monochrome and you have access to only five of your essential apps.

Elsewhere Fairphone 6 gets a 50MP main cam armed with a 1/1.56' Sony Lytia 700C sensor and OIS alongside a 13MP ultrawide lens.
There's a single RAM/storage trim with 8GB LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB storage, which is now carrying UFS 3.1 speeds. Storage is expandable via the microSDXC slot. The new 4,415mAh battery supports 30W wired charging speeds.
The software department is also interesting, as Fairphone 6 comes with two options. The 'regular' Fairphone 6 boots a near-stock Android 15, but you can also opt for the 'de-Googled' version running on /e/OS. The latter is still based on Android Open-Source Project (AOSP), but it omits Google apps and services for privacy-conscious users.
Fairphone 6 comes in Cloud White, Forest Green, and Horizon Black colors. The regular Android 15 version is priced at €599 while the one with /e/OS starts at €649.

We've been talking about the device for about a week now, but if you haven't been following our news feed, the main selling point of the Fairphone 6 is how easy it is to repair and replace parts of it, either for customization or due to this is a mid-range phone, you'd expect to be priced below the $500 / €500 price mark, but Fairphone 6 is a pretty expensive device. That's partly due to the fact that Fairphone 6 is a 'clean' device assembled in factories with fair labor conditions. As such, Fairphone is asking €600 for the Android version and €650 for the /e/OS variant. In the US, Fairphone sells only the /e/OS model through its local partner Murena. Fairphone 6 is available for pre-order in the US for $900, but it won't ship until August. vivo X Fold5 has the biggest battery (6,000mAh) and best protection (IP69+) of any foldable

The vivo X Fold5 has arrived – it's thinner, more powerful and more durable than its predecessor. It was unveiled in China earlier today and hopefully it will follow in the footsteps of the X Fold3 Pro and get a wider release soon. vivo X Fold5 The new model keeps both displays the same size – 6.53' cover display and 8.03' inner display. The inside one is now a Zeiss Master Color Screen and has second generation of Armor Glass. The vivo X Fold5 is slimmer – it measures 9.2mm folded and 4.3mm unfolded for the Titanium version, which is a bit lighter at 217g too. The White and Green Pine versions are a bit thicker and heavier at 9.7mm folded/4.55mm unfolded and 226g. For comparison, the vivo X Fold3 (which was thinner and lighter than the X Fold3 Pro) measured 10.2mm/4.7mm and weighed 219g. The hinge is made of high-strength steel and carbon fiber to be as durable and as light as possible. The X Fold5 becomes the first foldable to earn the highest water resistance ratings – IPX8 (submersion) and IPX9+ (water jets). It's rated IP5X for dust ingress and can operate in very cold environments, down to -20°C. The vivo X Fold5 is rated IP68/IP69+ and can work down to -20°C The impressive feats of engineering don't stop here. This is also the foldable with the biggest battery yet – 6,000mAh (split into two Si/C cells with capacities of 3,275mAh and 2,725mAh). The vivo X Fold5 has the biggest battery in a foldable yet at 6,000mAh Okay, it's not the thinnest horizontal foldable, but the practical considerations may win over in the end. For example, vivo engineers managed to find room for 40W fast wireless charging, in addition to 80W wired charging, which can come in handy. Going back to the displays, the inner panel is an LTPO OLED with 120Hz refresh rate, 2,480 x 2,200px resolution (10.1:9 aspect ratio) and 10-bit colors. Peak local brightness is 4,500 nits. The cameras boast a 50MP main with a 1/1.56' Sony IMX921 sensor and a Zeiss T* coated f/1.57 lens with OIS. The 'Zeiss Super Telephoto' module is a 3x periscope lens (f/2.55) with OIS and a 50MP 1/1.95' Sony IMX882 sensor. The ultra-wide is a third 50MP sensor (1/2.75') and has a 15mm f/2.05 lens, also with Zeiss T* coating. Triple 50MP Zeiss cameras on the back of the vivo X Fold5 The X Fold5 has 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 7 (be), Bluetooth 5.4 (aptX HD and Lossless, LDAC, LHDC), NFC and off-grid text and voice over Bluetooth at up to 1km distance. The USB-C port supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) and DisplayPort for video output. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 – yes, a chip that is about to be two generations old in a few months. It is paired with 12GB/16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB/512GB/1TB of UFS 4.1 storage. The old chipset is a bit of a disappointment and the display and camera upgrades are not earth-shattering. But the battery upgrades and top-level IP rating, plus the more slender build certainly look great. vivo X Fold5 in colorways And here's the best part – the vivo X Fold5 is not that expensive... for a foldable. The 12GB/256GB variant starts at CNY 7,000. For comparison, an Oppo Find N5 (12GB/256GB) is CNY 9,000. The pricing for all storage options is in the table below, plus conversions to dollars. vivo X Fold5 Price USD (converted) 12GB/256GB CNY 7,000 $975 12GB/512GB CNY 8,000 $1,115 16GB/512GB CNY 8,500 $1,255 16GB/1TB CNY 9,500 $1,325 The vivo X Fold5 is currently on pre-order at the official online store in China and sales start next week on July 2.

These Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE prices sound pretty bad, but they may not be official or final

If you're thinking of snubbing Samsung's two ultra-high-end foldable devices expected out in a couple of weeks in favor of the company's first-ever Fan Edition flip phone, it might be crucial to know exactly what you will sacrifice and how much money you're looking at saving. Well, that latter part is moving one step closer to being confirmed today with some "B7R" price points discovered at a European retailer. That's the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE's internal codename, mind you, and while the figures I'm going to tell you about in the next lines are unlikely to coincide with the handset's recommended pricing at its manufacturer, they can give you a pretty decent idea of what to expect from this budget-friendly addition to Samsung's foldable portfolio. That's the Z Flip 7 Fan Edition for you in a nutshell at €865 and up in "Euroland" and a minimum of £738 on British shores. Equivalent to around $1,000, those numbers don't include all taxes, actually going up to almost €1,050 and £890 once VAT is added in, which converts to $1,200 or so. The Z Flip 7 FE looks pretty fly for a relatively inexpensive foldable. | Image Credit -- Evan Blass The Z Flip 6, meanwhile, was officially released at £1,050 and up in the UK and €1,120 in many European countries in an entry-level 256GB storage configuration around this time last year. That means the most affordable Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE model will cost less than Samsung's only 2024 Android-running clamshell even if today's price tags pan out, which I'm not too sure about. Instead, I still expect this Exynos 2400-powered bad boy to start at under $900 in the US, as a number of tipsters and insiders predicted a little while back. In that case, the Z Flip 7 FE's 128GB storage variant could cost less than €900 in countries like France, Italy, or Germany and as little as £750 in Great Britain. The 256GB model, by the way, is today listed at €1,130 and £950 with VAT included, which doesn't sound great... because it's probably the worst case scenario too. That's kinda, sorta what you can expect the Z Flip 7 FE to look like at a first glance. Of course, the Z Flip 6 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor while this thing is likely to share a somewhat underwhelming Samsung-made Exynos 2400 SoC with the Galaxy S24 FE and possibly the upcoming S25 FE as well. Other than that, though, the design leaked a few months back sure seemed "inspired" by the Z Flip 6 and Z Flip 5 (down to the 6.7 and 3.4-inch screen sizes), and the same goes for a bunch of key specs like a dual 50 + 12MP rear-facing camera system, single 10MP front-facing snapper, 4,000mAh battery capacity, 25W wired charging, and 15W wireless charging support. Yes, that looks an awful lot like the Z Flip 6, but it's apparently not the Z Flip 6. | Image Credit -- Evan Blass All in all, we're clearly not looking at the absolute best foldable phone you'll be able to buy this holiday season, but at the right price, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 Fan Edition could certainly outshine the Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 following a joint Unpacked announcement on July 9 that's virtually guaranteed at this point. It remains to be seen, of course, if Samsung will manage to manufacture enough Z Flip 7 FE units to handle your demand, as multiple recent reports have hinted at surprisingly modest initial production plans for the world's top smartphone vendor, at least as far as this particular device is concerned.
