A delve into Vics' performance against Shifnal Town prior to Highgate clash
A GREAT effort by Vics, especially in the last 30 minutes when they were magnificent and definitely unfortunate not to get something out of the game.
A match of two halves, the first where Vics were punished twice for mistakes, and never really got going, the second where Vics were dominant and put the pressure on Shifnal, but just failed to get the equaliser they more than deserved.
It was fairly even for the first 10 minutes or so as the teams battled for supremacy.
Matt Farnworth for Vics had a powerful shot well blocked early on, but they were indebted to a good clearance from Blerti Jacaj when Town looked to be in on goal.
However there was nothing they could do in the 14th minute as a long throw came into the box and caused havoc and it ended up being turned into the net by Kyle Byrne at the far post.
Vics nearly responded immediately as a short corner found Joe Hurst whose shot was well saved while a Kieran Hamm header brought another good save from the Town keeper.
Shifnal were now having the better of the game and Zac Prior had to dive to his right to keep out a curling effort in the 23rd minute.
Town kept pressing but it was a Vics error which let them get their second in the 35th minute - an attempted back pass to Prior was left short, and Sam FitzGerald nipped in to slip the ball into the net.
It could have been worse for Vics just before half-time as an attempted lob nearly caught Prior out but he recovered well to make a superb save.
Vics came out more attacking at the start of the second half, but weren't threatening to get back into the match until the 58th minute when a deep free-kick was swung into the box and Will Lloyd was there to glance a header past Andrew Wycherley into the net.
This gave Vics belief, and spurred them into an onslaught on the Shifnal goal with Town hardly getting out of their own half.
Matty Clarke had a long-range effort which was deflected to safety then Jacaj rose highest at a corner but couldn't direct his header goalwards as the pressure built.
Shifnal were indebted to their keeper Wycherley for two top-class saves (and plenty of time-wasting) firstly from a Lloyd volley then a Hamm effort to keep them in front.
Time was running out though and Vics' last chance was in injury time as a low cross was turned agonisingly wide when it looked easier to score.

'Shouldn't do that': James Sicily under fire over post-match act in Hawthorn rooms
AFL fans have moved to defend James Sicily after the Hawthorn captain was criticised by Matthew Lloyd on Monday night. Speaking on 'Footy Classified' on Channel 9, Essendon legend Lloyd highlighted vision of Sicily sitting with his head in his hands after the Hawks' loss to Collingwood last Friday night. It marked Hawthorn's third loss in a row, and Sicily appeared a shattered man amid a worrying form slump. The vision showed the skipper with his head down and face covered, not interacting with any of his teammates. Speaking on Monday night, Lloyd said Sicily needed to show stronger leadership than what he did in the rooms after the game. "Last year I thought he stood up really well when they weren't going well after five rounds," Lloyd said. "He came on and did an interview with us and gee he was good. He had a wonderful season last year so it's too soon to question whether he's the right captain. "But I still feel he's very temperamental, and I don't think at times as a captain he's balanced enough (with his emotions). Even that vision in the rooms. I don't think as a captain you should have your head in your hands after the game." When suggested to Lloyd that players should be allowed to show emotion, he used James Hird as an example of a captain who never gave away when they were hurting. "You've got to be strong for everyone. You get up and get around everyone else and start talking to others," he said. "What I loved about James Hird is you would never know what kind of day he was having. Whether he was having a poor day or a good day he was the voice of reason and calmness in the rooms for us." Taking to social media, fans were quick to question whether that was the right message for Lloyd to be sending considering how times have changed. In the modern landscape, players are being encouraged to show more emotion and not bottle up how they're feeling. One person wrote: "Not everyone is a robot. Some players actually have emotions!" Another commented: "Imagine attacking a man for sharing his feelings with his mates." Lloyd also suggested coach Sam Mitchell move Sicily out of the forward line. "He's a surprise forward at times, but he shouldn't be starting there," Lloyd said. When a team loses games everything gets analysed within an inch of its life. The way the players talk, walk, interact, interview and now how they act 10 mins after a loss and if their head is down or not. If he doesn't show emotion guess what? NO EMOTION! NOT A CAPTAIN!! — Luke (@Luke5557725) June 2, 2025 Not everyone is a players actually have emotions! — Nev_is_here 🇭🇲😸🇦🇺 (@Nev_or_never) June 2, 2025 Maybe Sis had a headache? Seriously Llody, what do you want Sis to do, walk around with his chest pumped out? — The Thirsty Hawk (@thethirstyhawk) June 2, 2025 Mitchell launched a stirring defence of Sicily before the Collingwood game amid speculation he's battling groin issues. But Melbourne great Garry Lyon reckons it showed the Hawks have become "unnecessarily edgy." He said on Fox Footy: 'I thought 'they're getting unnecessarily wound up here' ... to me that was the mindset going in and they got punched in the nose. They're going to get more heat and they'll probably get crankier, but that's not going to do you any good. I did get a mindset they felt like they were under siege. They weren't under siege, it was just good old fashioned critique.' 'Sicily, as much as you don't want to point the finger at one particular player, I'm not sure if he's feeling sorry for himself or if he's feeling the burden of leadership, I wouldn't know, but you need your leaders to lead now," he said. 'Whether it's on the track, whether it's after the game they get together, or whether it's game day, you need your leaders and that's what they're working through.'

Fan scorecard: Unsung hero? Overriding emotion?
Season rating: 4/10. After a significant summer investment and coming into the season with serious momentum, to be so far adrift of the 'big 17' is a pretty major disappointment. We had a few positive moments, though, and unlike those around us stuck together despite the adversity. We'll be stronger for it. Happy with your manager? Yes. There are things I'm sure in hindsight he could have done differently at points in the season, but Kieran McKenna is always learning and finding ways to improve. Hopefully he stays with Town and that improvement journey continues together. Unsung hero: There will be a few of our double promotion heroes who depart this summer. One already confirmed is Massimo Luongo. The Australian joined on a free transfer in January 2023 having not made an appearance at previous club Middlesbrough. Despite this, Luongo immediately became a vital part of Town's midfield that dominated almost everyone in the EFL. Thanks Mass! Player you would most like to sign: As noted above, our midfield department will be depleted this summer. Plus we need to address our lack of physical stature compared with the sides in the big 17. Players like that aren't typically found in our usual market in the EFL so we need to expand our scouting network to find the next Pape Sarr or Abdoulaye Doucoure. Right now, my overriding emotion from the season is: I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed - in part at our inability to keep ourselves on the right side of the line, or at least to sustain a survival fight until the final day. Equal disappointment at what the Premier League has become in our 22 years away. Yes, it is the pinnacle, but it is also a brutal landscape which has all but left behind clubs of a modest stature now. I'm not sure that's something to be proud about. Player of the season - what fans are saying so far
We asked you to pick your player of the season after our Ipswich fan contributor narrowed it down to Liam Delap, Dara O'Shea, Omari Hutchinson and Jens Cajuste. Here are some of your comments on your selection, as well as some more names thrown into the ring: James: While Liam Delap is the obvious choice - and would be a worthy winner - my vote goes to O'Shea for his consistency of performances across a difficult defensive campaign for Town. I can't recall a poor display from O'Shea, who is your typical '7 out of 10' performer. He isn't afraid to put his head in where it hurts and has led by example, also improving the performances of those around him. I hope we manage to hold on to O'Shea for the 2025-26 Championship season and build our defence around him in our bid for an immediate return. Mathew: Been a tough season but Delap has been by far and away our best player. Hope he will stay but can't blame him if he chooses to go elsewhere. Defo future senior England striker! Rob: Cam Burgess has been player of the year, for me. Cost about £500K and every time we go up a level he steps up as well. Never outmuscled and surprisingly good with positioning and pace. Significantly better consistency than some of the more costly recruits. James: Cajuste. Some loan players come and go with little impact or buy-in, but he has taken to it easily. Alex Palmer also has done well and I wonder if he had been at the club from the start how the season would have panned out. Russell: Why didn't Julio Enciso get mentioned in player of the season shortlist? He was one of the most outstanding players this season. Don't forget to make your selection here
