Syndicates use quiet Kelantan border to sneak in foreign workers
Despite being separated from Thailand by the shallow Sungai Golok, the source said the ruse was detected only at one of the three checkpoints in the state.
Kelantan has three entry points along the Thai border: Rantau Panjang, Pengkalan Kubor in Tumpat and Bukit Bunga in Tanah Merah.
"However, two of these checkpoints, Rantau Panjang and Pengkalan Kubor, are always busy with cross-border trade and travel.
"They are less likely to be used by syndicate members due to the high traffic volume and enforcement presence.
"Instead, syndicate members opt for the Bukit Bunga Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security Complex, which is located in a quieter area and receives less scrutiny."
The source said local agents were usually the facilitators of the syndicate, working with Thais employed in Malaysia, particularly in eateries and restaurants.
"Thais working in Malaysia engage local agents.
"These agents deliver the workers' passports to Immigration officers and have them stamped without the passport holders being present.
"Some of these officers are believed to have been cooperating with the agents for years."
While the scale of the "flying passport" ruse in Kelantan may not rival that of Johor or other border states, enforcement sources said it remained a serious breach of Immigration protocols and national security.
Kelantan Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Azmin Yusoff said no reports had been received about border enforcement officers' involvement in the ruse.
"We, however, urge members of the public to come forward with information."
Azmin, however, said three Immigration officers were detained by the state MACC in the first six months of this year, including those assigned to the Kelantan-Thailand border.
He said the three were among the 21 enforcement officers arrested since 2022 for soliciting and receiving bribes.

Kelantan Immigration uncovers use of fake passport stamps by worker agents
RANTAU PANJANG: The state Immigration Department has detected a small number of agents managing the entry of Thai workers into Malaysia who are suspected of using fake passport stamps. State Immigration director Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohamad Hassan said the discovery was made following the inspection of six "roadtour" vans. He said the vehicles entered the country through the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex here. "In the operation conducted this afternoon, we inspected a total of 42 Thais after stopping the vehicles in which they were travelling. "Checks revealed that the passport of one of the drivers had Immigration stamps that looked suspicious and lacked an entry stamp from Thai authorities. "The driver has since been detained for further investigations," he told reporters here today. Yusoff said the two-hour operation which began at 5.30pm, involved more than 20 officers. He said the Thais, mostly women, were being held for questioning. The foreigners were heading to Kuala Lumpur to work when arrested by Immigration officers. All have been sent to the department's enforcement office in Kota Baru for documentation.

Two businessmen remanded over RM800,000 bribery case in Kuching

KUCHING (Aug 5): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak has remanded two business owners for allegedly soliciting and receiving more than RM800,000 in bribes to facilitate an application for a non-existent commercial land lot in Kuching. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan issued a six-day remand order until Aug 11 at the Kuching Magistrate's Court today, following an application by MACC. Sources said the two male suspects, both in their 50s, were arrested around 8pm yesterday when they turned up at the MACC Sarawak office to give their statements. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired to solicit and receive bribes as an inducement to help process an application for a commercial development land lot in Kuching. However, such an application never existed,' the source said. It is believed the alleged offences took place between 2020 and 2021.
