Udhagamandalam: A 62-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant while he was working at a tea estate at New Hope in the O'Valley forest range in Gudalur in the Nilgiris around 9.30am on Monday.
This is the second such incident in the locality in the past three days.
Forest range officer C Veeramani identified the deceased as Mani, 62, a temporary worker at the Manjushree tea estate in Gudalur.
He said the forest field staff had noticed the movement of a wild elephant in the area and sent SMS alerts to the local people around 7.30am. "It is likely that Mani missed the alert."
Mani's body was sent to the govt hospital at Gudalur for a postmortem.
The forest department has issued an initial compensation of Rs50,000 to the victim's family.
The Nilgiris forest division, meanwhile, launched a toll-free number – 18004254343 – on Monday to address man-animal conflicts. Unveiled by Supriya Sahu, additional chief secretary to the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, the public could contact the toll-free number to report man-animal conflicts round the clock.
In recent times, locals have reported encounters with leopards and sloth bears, which stray into residential areas, causing fear and disrupting daily life.
"We may receive calls from the Gudalur forest division and the MTR buffer zone as well. In such cases, we will redirect the calls to the respective forest ranges or divisions," said district forest officer S Gowtham.

Ghana national arrested in Mumbai with cocaine worth 1 crore, police uncover student drug network

Mumbai: A Ghana national, Henry Almoh (34), was arrested in Mumbai after the MIDC police team found him in possession of 289gms of cocaine valued at Rs1.2 crore. The police were surprised to discover that at least 25 calls were received on Almoh's mobile between 10.30 pm and 11 pm by youngsters soon after his arrest on Monday . The MIDC police said that Almoh had been residing in the Andheri East Vijay Nagar locality for the last four to five years in a rented flat. It was also revealed that his passport expired in 2024 and he had not returned to his home country. Initially, he tried to hide his identity by producing fake Nigerian passport. Almoh, who stands over six feet tall and is well-built, was caught after six policemen overpowered him when he attempted to escape upon noticing them. Initially, Almoh tried to overpower the officers, but when the police displayed their firearms, he ceased protesting. "Almoh is booked under the narcotic substance act and is in police custody for a week. We have summoned the flat owner who rented out the flat to Almoh without submitting details to the local police though they have completed the leave and licence registration," said a police officer of the MIDC police station. Almoh was held following a tip-off received by DCP Datta Nalawade, who set up a trap below the bridge at Salve Nagar near Vijay Nagar, where Almoh resides. DCP Nalawade led the team—ACP Gajanan Pawar, senior inspector Ravindra Wani, inspector Mahesh Gurav, assistant inspector Yash Palwe, and staff—who caught Almoh when he arrived at the locality at 10.30 pm on Monday. "Initially, he handed over Nigerian passport which turned out fake and had fake identity details. During inquiry, we found Ghanaian passport that too was expired in 2024. He has taken the flat on rent and frequently travelled to Ghana and returned to Mumbai and stayed in Andheri," said an officer.
