Kendrapada: Millions of
Olive Ridley turtles
started emerging from their nests Tuesday night at
Gahirmatha marine sanctuary
, the world's largest rookery in Kendrapada district. The mass hatching took place across Nasi-1, Nasi-2, and Eakakulanasi islands within Bhitarkanika National Park, following a successful
nesting season
that saw 606,933 turtles laying eggs between March 5 to 10. "A female turtle typically lays 80 to 100 eggs," said Kapil Pradhan, forest range officer of Gahirmatha. The eggs incubate in the warm sand for 40 to 45 days before the two-inch hatchlings emerge under the cover of darkness.
To protect the vulnerable hatchlings, authorities have implemented several safety measures. "We've fenced the 6-km nesting beach to prevent the hatchlings from wandering towards land or nearby mangrove forests instead of the sea," Pradhan said. Forest guards and locals have been deployed to ward off predators such as dogs, jackals, and birds.
Also, defence personnel at the nearby Abdul Kalam Island missile testing range have masked bright lights that could disorient the hatchlings. Secretary of Gahirmatha Marine Turtles and Mangrove Conservation Society Hemant Rout said the undisturbed nests typically have a 90 per cent success rate while those affected by human or animal interference may drop to 25 per cent or lower. "The survival rate is extremely low — only one in a thousand hatchlings survives till adulthood. Those that survive will return to this very beach in about 20 years to mate and lay eggs, guided by Earth's magnetic field," Rout added.

Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveils SWRO project, hails IREL drive for water supply

BERHAMPUR: Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday unveiled the sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) project in Chatrapur. The SWRO unit, established at the desalination plant on the premises of Indian Rare Earths Ltd (IREL) at Matikhal, will purify seawater and supply drinking water to nearby villages. 'Despite being a coastal district, Ganjam faced crisis of clean drinking water due to high salinity in groundwater and limited freshwater resources. This project is an important milestone towards water conservation in the area. It will provide a reliable source of drinking water to the people,' he said and thanked IREL for working towards building a healthy society and sustainable development. He said IREL is an important public sector undertaking in the strategic sector of the country which has, for the last 40 to 45 years, been working for rare earth's development. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) spent `160 crore to develop a technology to purify seawater and provide clean drinking water to people. One such plant has been set up here with indigenous technology,' Pradhan said. Just as Israel is purifying sea water and putting it to use on a large scale, here too, in the first phase, drinking water will be provided to people of Matikhal and Aryapalli areas by spending only 11 paisa per litre, he added. 'This is probably the first in the state to convert sea water into fresh water and provide it to the people,' said Pradhan. MPs Anita Subhadarshini and Pradeep Panigrahy were present during the inauguration.

India's education system transformed in last few years: Min

1 2 Berhampur: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday said the country's higher education ecosystem has transformed a lot in the last few years, and India has become the favourite destination of global educational institutions. While several global institutes have opened their campuses in the country, others are in the pipeline. Some of our institutes also opened their campuses in foreign countries. IIM Ahmedabad will soon open its campus in Dubai, said Pradhan, while addressing the convocation at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur. Highlighting the growth of education in the country, he said the total enrolment of students touched around 4.46 crore in 2022-23, a 30% increase since 2014-15. The female enrolment during the period grew by around 38 to 40%. "This indicates the govt's commitment towards inclusive education," he said. The govt implemented the New Education Policy-2020, keeping an eye on achieving India as a developed nation by 2047—the Viksit Bharat, call of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Urging the students to become "job creators and not be job-seekers," he said they should be involved in innovation. Addressing the convocation of Berhampur University earlier, he urged the students to work hard to achieve the Viksit Odisha and Viksit Bharat in 2036 and 2047, respectively, as called by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Bharat number one in economics in the world. Odisha will celebrate its centenary of statehood in the next 11 years, while the country celebrates its centenary of achievement of freedom in 2047. The young students should play a key role in achieving the Viksit Odisha and Viksit Bharat in the next 11 and 22 years, said Pradhan. University is not an institute to teach, but it should be involved in research and evolve innovations, he said. Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati addressed the convocations of both the institutes and highlighted the growth of the education ecosystem of the country in the last few years, which makes it flexible and innovation-driven. Ashok Kumar Ganguli, director, IISER Berhampur, highlighted the achievements of the institute. In the convocation, 136 BS-MS, one MS degree, and 22 PhD students received their degrees. The governor inaugurated the state-of-the-art "central advanced instrumentation facility" on the IISER campus. Berhampur University awarded honorary to Ajit Kumar Mohanty, secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Tessy Thomas, former Director General, Aeronautical Systems, DRDO and known as the "Missile Woman of India," and Raimati Ghiuria, seed custodian, well known as Millet Queen. New Delhi: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday said that Indian higher education institutions (HEIs) have been tasked with a goal to ensure at least 25 of them rank among the top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings in coming years as part of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 implementation. Before his address, he handed letters of intent (LoI) to four foreign universities for setting up campuses in India and unveiled educational projects worth more than ₹4,000 crore, including new initiatives, artificial intelligence (AI) enabled learning apps, campus inaugurations, and foundation stone laying. 'There are 54 India's HEIs which have secured a spot in QS World University Rankings 2026. I have appealed, requested and given a challenge to directors of our higher education institutions and vice-chancellors of universities to compete for ensuring that at least 25 of them rank among the top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings. I appeal to higher education secretary Vineet Joshi to ask for the year-wise plan from these institutions,' he said. India has 54 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it the fourth most represented country after the United States (192), the United Kingdom (90), and China (72). Among 54, six featured in the global top 250 with IIT Delhi leading the Indian institutions which is ranked 123rd globally, rising from 150th in 2025. They will follow the UGC (Setting Up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023. '…I appeal to officials of India's higher education system to compete with these foreign universities. I am confident my Indian universities will be much ahead of these foreign universities. Let there be healthy competition between foreign universities and Indian institutions,' he said. Pradhan said that Indian Knowledge System (IKS), a key NEP 2020 recommendation, relies on Indian languages for its implementation. Despite claims of opposition, nearly all states and Union Territories embrace NEP and has been actively promoting mother-tongue-based education in foundational and preparatory classes, he said. Pradhan said that he considered Balvatika as the first paradigm shift under NEP 2020 and NCERT's new age textbooks as the second big paradigm shift. NCERT has also released primers in 117 languages to promote education in mother tongue and multilingual education. Pre-school education has become part of the formal education system under NEP. In a paradigm shift, Balvatikas across the country are providing Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) for children aged 3 to 6 years,' Pradhan said. Jaadui Pitara is NCERT's innovative, multilingual learning kit designed for early childhood education, offering engaging resources for Balvatika and primary classes. The NEP 2020 has replaced the 10+2 schooling system with a new 5+3+3+4 structure — foundational (pre-primary classes in Balvatika 1, 2 and 3 and Class 1 and 2), preparatory (Classes 3 to 5), middle (6 to 8), and secondary (9 to 12). NCERT has published new textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 and will release new books for Classes 9-12 next year.
