US blanks Denmark 5-0 and Czechs beat Switzerland 5-4 on 1st day of ice hockey worlds
Matty Beniers led the Americans with two goals, Cutter Gauthier and Mason Lohrei had a goal and an assist each, and Logan Cooley also scored in a Group B game played in Herning, Denmark.
Michael Kesselring had two assists and goaltender Joey Daccord recorded a 26-shot shutout.

'Any time a goalie gets a shutout is a team result,' Daccord said after his debut at the worlds.
Gauthier opened the scoring from the slot with 2:08 left in the opening period. Cooley doubled the advantage on a power play, Beniers added on a rebound in the middle period and Lohrei made it 4-0 from the point midway through the final period. Beniers one-timed a slap shot for his second with 3:44 remaining.
Sweden delights home crowd
Sweden shut out Slovakia 5-0 to delight the home crowd in Stockholm in Group A.
Mikael Backlund, Leo Carlsson and Jonas Brodin scored 8:37 apart in the second part of the opening period to give Sweden a commanding 3-0 lead.
Elias Lindholm stretched it to 4-0 in the second and Mika Zibanejad finished it off in the final period.
Backlund and Lindholm added an assist each.
Sweden won the championship when it took place in Stockholm last time in 2013.
Czechs prevail in OT
Defending champion Czech Republic earlier prevailed in overtime to beat Switzerland 5-4 in a rematch of last year's final.
Roman Cervenka scored the winner 2:30 into overtime from the left circle after David Pastrnak fed him with his second assist in in Herning.

Czech Lukas Sedlak tied the game at 4-4 on a rebound on a power play with 3:47 left to force overtime.
Matej Stransky, Filip Zadina and Filip Pyrochta also scored for the Czechs who beat the Swiss 2-0 in the final last year in Prague.
Christian Marti, Damien Riat, Sandro Schmid and Sven Andrighetto scored for Switzerland.
In Stockholm, Finland topped Austria 2-1.
The tournament is the final men's international test before the 2026 Winter Games in Italy, where NHL players return to the Olympics after 12 years.

‘No appetite' for municipal tax dollars to support new Sens arena: Sutcliffe

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says he does not believe local taxpayers want city funds to go into a new NHL arena. The Ottawa Senators and the National Capital Commission jointly announced on Monday that they had signed an agreement for the sale and purchase of about 11 acres of land in LeBreton Flats, which the Senators plan to use to build a new hockey arena. Neither the Sens nor the NCC would comment further on the deal, but in previous discussions, Senators President Cyril Leeder said a new arena, if one is built, would take several years to complete. (CTV News Ottawa) In the meantime, Sutcliffe says the City of Ottawa has other priorities for its tax dollars. 'I don't think there's an appetite for public dollars to go into an NHL hockey arena. There are other priorities that we're working on right now to invest in public assets, including recreation facilities, including Lansdowne Park, including roads and sidewalks and bike lanes,' Sutcliffe told CTV News Ottawa on Tuesday. 'There are many, many other priorities that we're focused on right now and I don't think the public wants us to write a cheque to support the construction of an NHL arena.' The City is notably in the process of the Lansdowne 2.0 revitalization, a nearly half-billion-dollar project to rebuild stands at the city-owned TD Place Stadium and tear down and construct an entirely new arena for teams such as the Ottawa 67's and the Ottawa Charge. The City of Ottawa has estimated the price-tag for the new 5,500-seat event centre and a north-side stands at $419 million, but a report from the auditor general warned construction cost estimates could be understated by $73.4 million. The City of Calgary and the City of Edmonton have put municipal dollars toward NHL arenas in their respective markets. Sutcliffe says the news about the land purchase agreement is a 'big step forward' for the Sens and for the city, and he's excited to see more details once the team develops its plans more formally. 'Right now, I think the ball is very much in the Senators' court. They've secured a piece of land in the centre of Ottawa. They want to build an arena. So, I think the next step is up to them in terms of how quickly they want to move and what they want to do next,' he said. 'It's so early in the process. We've not been asked for anything. The Senators have not made any requests to us. We don't even know what the plan is going to look like… it's all very early.' While city tax dollars might not go into building the arena itself, the city will still be involved in the infrastructure surrounding the site, Sutcliffe said. 'With any development in the city, when there's something exciting happening, we're ready to be partners and ready to work with the proponents in order to make sure that it's moved forward as quickly as possible and the city's doing everything it can to support it,' he said. Canadian Tire Centre The Canadian Tire Centre will remain the home of the Ottawa Senators as the club takes the next step in building a new arena at LeBreton Flats. 'The Canadian Tire Centre has been a major economic driver for Kanata and for the entire west end of Ottawa for 30 years now. It's a major employer, it drives a lot of economic activity in the area for restaurants and other businesses, so we need a plan for that site to make sure that the economy in the west end of the city and in Kanata is sustained and preserved,' he said. Twins owners opt to halt the sale and keep the club in the family, adding new investors instead
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins are no longer for sale, executive chair Joe Pohlad announced Wednesday on behalf of his family. After exploring a variety of options over the past 10 months, the Pohlad family will remain the principal owner of the club and add new investors instead. Carl Pohlad, a banking magnate and the late grandfather of Joe Pohlad, purchased the Twins in 1984 for $44 million. 'For more than four decades, our family has had the privilege of owning the Minnesota Twins. This franchise has become part of our family story, as it has for our employees, our players, this community, and Twins fans everywhere,' Joe Pohlad said in his announcement. 'Over the past several months, we explored a wide range of potential investment and ownership opportunities. Our focus throughout has been on what's best for the long-term future of the Twins. We have been fully open to all possibilities.' Pohlad said the family was in the process of adding two 'significant' limited partnership groups to bring in fresh ideas, bolster critical partnerships and shape the long-term vision of the franchise that relocated to Minnesota in 1961 after originating as the Washington Senators. Details about the new investors will be kept private until Major League Baseball approval of the transactions, Pohlad said. The Twins are on track for their lowest attendance total in 16 seasons at Target Field, and an ownership-mandated payroll reduction last year, among other factors, has contributed to a dissatisfied customer base. The Twins traded 10 players off their roster leading up to the July 31 deadline, furthering the frustration. Word that the Pohlads are staying put certainly won't help the morale of Minnesota baseball fans, who've been waiting for another World Series title since 1991.
