CM dares KCR for a debate on river water issues in assembly

The Hindu24-06-2025
Upping the ante against the Bharat Rashtra Samithi president K. Chandrasekhar Rao for allegedly mortgaging the interests of Telangana to Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has challenged the Opposition leader for a debate in the legislative assembly on Polavaram- Banakacherla on Godavari proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government.
The BRS president can chose the time and date of his choice and the government is prepared to convene a special session to exclusively discuss about the State's share of water in Godavari and Krishna rivers and the way the interests of farmers are mortgaged by the previous regime. 'I will come with proofs to nail who is the traitor of Telangana. Is Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao ready?' the Chief Minister said.
Mr. Revanth Reddy utilised the celebrations organised to mark completion of crediting of over ₹9,000 crore into the accounts of 70 lakh farmers under Rythu Bandhu to launch a tirade against the BRS. The BRS leaders were trying to cast aspersions on the Congress government when their government had in fact compromised on the State's interests in lure of commissions.
He took strong exceptions to the attempts of the main Opposition to provoke the people in the name of alleged injustice to the State in Godavari water. 'The Polavaram-Banakacherla project was conceptualised by the neighbouring State after Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao's claim in 2016 that 3,000 tmcft of Godavari water is going waste into the sea. The BRS president went on the assert that he will extend his cooperation in making Rayalaseema fertile agreeing for diversion of Godavari water through Handri-Neeva project by the neighbouring State,' Mr. Revanth Reddy said.
He criticised the BRS leaders for trying to project an image that he (Mr. Revanth Reddy) allowed diversion of Godavari water becoming hand in glove with A.P. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. 'I did not betray the Congress like he (Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao) does after promising to merge his party with the Congress,' he alleged.
The situation was no different when it came to Krishna waters. Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao, the former Chief Minister, agreed for Telangana's share of 299 tmcft out of the 811 tmcft allowing A.P. to draw 512 tmcft as its share. 'There is record of the Apex Council meeting where Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao has accepted the offer. I am ready to furnish the proof if he is willing to come face to face in the assembly,' Mr. Revanth Reddy said. Telangana, according to international norms, should get 555 tmcft of Krishna water as 66% of the area traversed by the river was in Telangana.
The Chief Minister was particularly critical of the previous government for, what he called, swindling away huge public money in the name of Kaleshwaram project which suffered major damages within three years of construction. 'His (Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao's) family amassed thousands of crores in the name of Kaleshwaram while he mortgaged the interests of the State, especially of farmers, agreeing to lower share in river water,' he said.
The BRS government had in fact shelved the pending projects like Nettempadu, Bhima, Kalwakurthy and others works which were started when the Congress was in power in the erstwhile united State. He also dismissed claims of the BRS leaders that the government did not mount pressure on the Centre against the projects proposed by the neighbouring A.P. government.
'I am fighting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Telangana's rights and am prepared to go to any extent in this regard,' he said recalling his warning to Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil that the State would approach the Supreme Court if permission were granted to Polavaram-Banakacherla project.
Rajiv Yuva Vikasam
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has announced that the focus of his government will now be on effective implementation of Rajiv Yuva Vikasam, the scheme aimed at providing financial support to eligible youth for taking up self employment.
He said after completion of Rythu Bharosa, crediting ₹9,000 crore into the accounts of over 70 lakh farmers in nine days, the government had resolved to finalise a concrete action plan in the interests of youth. Rajiv Yuva Vikasam was conceived after filling over 60,000 vacant posts in the government enabling more youth to get employment opportunities.

Rahul Gandhi Questions PM Modi's Silence on Trump's Ceasefire Mediation Claims

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has intensified his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reluctance to directly challenge US President Donald Trump's claims regarding American mediation in the India-Pakistan ceasefire agreement. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Gandhi suggested that Modi's silence on the matter stems from strategic constraints rather than diplomatic courtesy. The Congress leader argued that the Prime Minister cannot openly contradict Trump without risking potential revelations that could expose uncomfortable truths about the bilateral relationship. Gandhi explicitly connected Trump's persistent statements to ongoing trade negotiations between the United States and India. He characterized the American President's remarks as leveraging tactics designed to secure favorable terms in upcoming commercial discussions. The Congress leader predicted that continued pressure would ultimately result in a trade agreement that might compromise India's interests. The controversy centers on Trump's repeated assertions that Washington facilitated a "full and immediate" ceasefire between India and Pakistan through American diplomatic intervention. The US President has reiterated these claims approximately thirty times since the May 10 truce agreement, according to Congress estimates. India has consistently maintained that the ceasefire understanding emerged through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations from both countries, explicitly rejecting any foreign mediation role. This official position contradicts Trump's public narrative about American involvement in the peace process. During Tuesday's parliamentary session, Gandhi challenged Modi to demonstrate courage comparable to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by openly declaring Trump's statements false. The Congress leader specifically dared Modi to state in Parliament that "Donald Trump is lying" about the mediation claims. In his subsequent parliamentary response, Modi asserted that no international leader had requested India to halt its military operations, though he notably avoided mentioning Trump by name. This omission has become a focal point for Opposition criticism. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera employed vivid imagery to characterize the relationship dynamics, suggesting Trump maintains controlling influence over Modi's diplomatic responses. The party has accused the Prime Minister of being in a compromised position with significant information to conceal.

EAM Jaishankar roasts Oppn over India's ‘new normal' policy

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday lashed out at the Opposition over feigning ignorance over the term 'India's new normal' and coined a new name 'Modi normal' to elucidate the new defining strategy of the country in responding to acts of terror and crushing terrorists as well as their masterminds, irrespective of their location. Joining the Operation Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said that some members raised hue and cry over the term 'new normal' and hence he was explaining India's new security doctrine via 'Modi normal' and 'Congress normal'. He said that the 'Modi normal' has clearly laid out guidelines and principles on matters of national security that remain steadfast and non-negotiable. 'Terrorists will not be treated as proxies, cross-border terror will get an appropriate response, talks and terror won't go together, we won't give into nuclear blackmailing, and blood and water won't flow together,' he told the House, outlining the redefined national strategy under the Modi government. Notably, the 'new normal' policy came into being after the Modi government gave full operational freedom to the forces during Operation Sindoor and stated that any act of terror on Indian soil will now be seen as an attack on India's sovereignty and therefore will be responded to by the armed forces in the strongest possible manner. EAM Jaishankar further said that India's Operation Sindoor did a global service by destroying hubs of global terror in Pakistan. 'Bahalwapur and Muridke remain the biggest centres of nurturing terrorists and spreading terrorism in India and abroad. Our forces reduced it to dust; they did a global service and are being suitably applauded by all,' he said. Lambasting the 'sceptical' Opposition, he said that there are ample examples of Pakistani military establishments facing the fury of Indian forces, but there are some who continue to undermine our security forces for certain political motives. The Minister said that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a candid confession about Indian military strikes pulverising its military installations, but this fails to convince those who continue to remain sceptical of the Army's accomplishments. 'Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif admitted that General Munir called him, saying that Indian ballistic missiles hit their Noor Khan air base and missiles like Brahmos targeted their provinces like Rawalpindi,' he said and lamented that the political parties back home are decrying the great achievements of the Indian Armed Forces for scoring political points.

Lok Sabha resumes after adjournment amid opposition uproar over Manipur issue

As the special discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor entered its third day in Parliament, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar lead the government's reply in Parliament on the Operation Sindoor debate. Earlier in the day, Opposition parties protested in the Parliament House complex for the seventh consecutive day against the Election Commission's voter roll revision in Bihar, and demanded its rollback. On Day 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Pahalgam strike the 'height of cruelty' and declared that terrorism and its perpetrators 'won't be spared'. Modi's remarks came after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned why Operation Sindoor lasted only 22 minutes and challenged the PM to publicly call Donald Trump a liar over his repeated claims of mediating an India-Pakistan ceasefire. Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that the three terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev were behind the Pahalgam attack. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the ceasefire with Pakistan and PM's silence on Trump's truce claims. Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi slammed the government over intel lapse and lack of security at attack site.
