Stock in major Maha dams breaches halfway-mark as early as July first week, highest for the period in at least a decade
According to a senior official from the water resources department, the collective water storage in Maharashtra's major dams reached 51% of their total capacity on Thursday, highest July first week stock in at least a decade. The stock stood at just 20% on the same day last year.
"Several key reservoirs in western Maharashtra have reached or are nearing the halfway mark in terms of water storage. These include prominent dams like Ujani, Varasgaon, Panshet and Bhatghar in Pune district; Koyna and Radhanagari in Kolhapur; Gangapur and Bhandardara in Nashik; and Veer and Dhom in Satara district.
Besides, major dams in the Marathwada region, including Jayakwadi, Manjara, Sina Koregaon and Lower Terna, have also reached near half capacity," the official said, citing data available with the department.

The official said the dams recorded a steady rise in their levels over the past month because of heavy spells in their catchments, many of which received rainfall ranging between 500mm and 1,000mm during the period.

"Sudden increase in water levels also led to water release from some of the dams. Water has been released into various rivers from Khadakwasla, Veer, Chaskaman and Ujani dams over the last few days as a precautionary measure," the official said.
Officials from the department said teams were deployed at all the dam sites round-the-clock to monitor water levels and manage discharges.
According to the department, there are 138 major dams spread across six divisions across the state.
Dams from the Konkan region were at the top with collective live storage of 61% on Thursday against last year's stock of 28%, followed by the dams in the Pune division, which had 58% stock as compared to last year's reserve of 15%. The collective storage in the dams in the Nashik division was at 52% as against 17% in 2024. "Nagpur is the only division in the state where major dams collectively had lesser live water stock on Thursday (35%) when compared to last year's stock of 36.4%, primarily due to less rainfall in the Vidarbha region during the period," another official from the department said.
Officials from the Khadakwasla irrigation circle said water discharge from Khadakwasla dam was increased to the rate of 8,400 cusecs into the Mutha river on Thursday following a rise in rainfall activity in the catchments. The irrigation department has issued alert to PMC to increase vigilance along the river.

Meltdown: Swiss glaciers hit annual tipping point weeks early
The snow and ice accumulated last winter by Switzerland's glaciers has already melted away, a monitoring service said, with Friday marking the alarming second-earliest arrival on record of the tipping point known as glacier loss day . All further melting between now and October will see the size of glaciers in the Swiss Alps shrink, according to Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS). This century, the tipping point, on average, has been reached in mid-August -- itself already bad news for the nation's 1,400 glaciers, which are shrinking at a staggering rate. Its arrival several weeks earlier on July 4 is "another alarm call", GLAMOS chief Matthias Huss told AFP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo "It's like the glaciers are shouting out: 'We're disappearing. Help us.'" Glaciers in the Swiss Alps began to retreat about 170 years ago. The retreat was initially modest but in recent decades, melting has accelerated significantly as the climate warms. The volume of Swiss glaciers shrank by 38 percent between 2000 and 2024. Summer of destruction "If we have a glacier loss day, it means that the glacier is losing mass," said Huss. "For a glacier that is healthy, the day would occur at the end of September, or in October -- or not at all". With no glacier loss day, the summer would simply melt away only the snow that accumulated over the previous winter. This would be "the ideal case -- a glacier in equilibrium with the climate", said Huss. Its arrival on July 4 means that "critically, we have the whole summer left to destroy the ice". "Moving this day forward by five to six weeks before the normal date over the last 20 years means we're just prolonging this mass loss season dramatically," he said. The assessment is made using 12 reference glaciers. Last winter saw low levels of snowfall, and June was the second warmest on record, contributing to the day's early arrival this year. In data going back to 2000, the only time that the tipping point arrived even earlier was in 2022, when it came on June 26. "That was really a game-changer for us glaciologists because it was the first year when we saw absolutely extreme melting. "Everything that we knew before about glacier melting changed," said Huss. Experts thought 2022 was a complete outlier and although a warming climate meant other such years would be coming down the line, they did not expect to see the next very early glacier loss day coming so soon afterwards. Feedback effect Huss noted that extreme melting produces an accelerating feedback effect, worsening the situation even further. Once the reflective white snow coverage from winter is gone from the top of the glacier, the darker, more absorbent grey surface of the bare ice is exposed. "With the same amount of solar radiation, we can now melt more ice," Huss said. With the European heatwave over the past week and the possibility of further heatwaves in July and August, "it is very like that again it is a very bad year for Swiss glaciers", he said. Melting glaciers threatens the long-term water security for millions of people downstream who rely on them for fresh water. Much of the water that flows into the Rhine and the Rhone, two of Europe's major rivers, comes from the Alpine glaciers .

2 IAF personnel drown in Nainital lake as heavy rains pound Uttarakhand
Amid heavy rains in Uttarakhand, two Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel drowned in a swollen lake in Bhimtal, officials said on Friday. Prince Yadav (22) from Pathankot, Punjab and Sahil Kumar (23) from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, were part of a group of eight IAF personnel, including four women, vacationing in Nainital, Circle Officer Pramod Shah said. Locals joined the police in the rescue operation to pull Yadav and Kumar's bodies out of the lake after a struggle that lasted for almost an hour, he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More About Tungsten Carbide Tip Manufacturers in Europe Tungsten Carbide Tips | Search Ads Undo The rains which have been battering the state have affected daily life with the closure of more than a hundred roads across the state, disrupting the Chardham yatra and causing food grain shortages in some villages in the Geeth area of Uttarkashi district. The highway to Yamunotri has been blocked for the past five days ever since a massive landslide hit the shelters of construction workers at Silai bend, leaving nine people missing and washing out a 12-metre stretch of the road. Live Events The road to Kedarnath also remains blocked due to landslide debris between Sonprayag and Gaurikund, making movement between the two points impossible, officials said, adding that efforts are on to reopen them. Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday to assess the situation in the disaster-sensitive districts of the state, including Kedarnath Dham in the Rudraprayag district. Dhami shared this development in a post on X, stating that the Home Minister assured him that the Central Government's emergency relief agencies, including the NDRF and ITBP , are being deployed promptly. This is to ensure that the Chardham Yatra remains uninterrupted and that devotees do not experience any inconvenience while travelling. On Friday morning, boulders also blocked the Badrinath highway at several locations. A total of 109 roads across the hill state are closed due to rain-related blockages, the State Emergency Operation Centre said. Most rivers, including the Ganga in Haridwar, Alaknanda, Nandakini and Pindar in Chamoli, Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi and Kali, Gori and Saryu rivers in Pithoragarh district, are in spate, flowing just a couple of metres below the danger mark, officials said. The Alaknanda river is in spate from Badrinath up to Rudraprayag. The water level of Mandakini has also been on the rise for the last three days, with its banks submerged under water. The administration is making announcements through loudspeakers, alerting people living close to its banks. The waters of a lake formed by an overflowing Yamuna river at Syanachatti in the Barkot area of Uttarkashi have begun to inundate houses and hotels located close to its banks, officials state. Barkot SDM Brijesh Tiwari said that he visited the lake site to assess the situation, and an excavator was brought to remove the silt and unclog the lake's outlet. Efforts are also being made to reopen the Yamunotri highway, which has been breached at multiple locations, including Ojri and Banas. The prolonged disruption of this route has started to cause a shortage of food grains in the villages of the Geeth area, prompting locals to urge authorities to address the issue before it escalates further. "Necessary steps must be taken by the administration to provide food and other essential items to the affected villages without further delay," stated Mahavir Panwar Mahi, a local social worker. In Dehradun, the roads remain heavily waterlogged at Prince Chawk and the roundabout near Doon Hospital, where blocked drains and overflowing sewer chambers have added to the woes of officegoers and schoolchildren. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail in various districts of the state for the next few days, officials said.
