Enemy Media: Israelis Flee Iranian Bombings to Europe via Sinai
Occupied Quds - (Saba): Israeli media reported that hundreds of Israelis fled Iranian bombardment of the occupied Palestinian territories to Europe via the Sinai Peninsula, despite travel warnings to Egypt. The Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the Israeli National Security Command had warned Israelis against remaining in or traveling to Egypt following the outbreak of war with Tehran. Despite this, Israelis are passing overland through the Taba border crossing in Sinai and by air via Sharm el-Sheikh Airport. The newspaper added that Israelis are prepared to undertake a long, arduous, and even dangerous journey within Sinai and not remain in Israel during this period. It explained that there is a rapid development in the phenomenon of migration in the opposite direction, as Israelis wishing to leave the occupied Palestinian territories during these tense days are resorting to the indirect option of crossing overland to the Egyptian city of Taba, and from there by air from Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. The newspaper continued: "Despite the complex and dangerous route, which involves border crossings, long journeys, and delays, the high security risks, and explicit instructions to avoid Egypt and Sinai, dozens, even hundreds, of Israelis choose to take this route to escape the war." The newspaper said that on social media, Israelis say this route requires a degree of logistical flexibility. The trip takes approximately three hours by car between Taba and Sharm el-Sheikh. Some passengers reported being asked to show a departure ticket from Sharm el-Sheikh or a short-term hotel reservation. Waiting times at the border itself, according to testimonies, range from 10 to 30 minutes. The main and most convenient destination from Sharm el-Sheikh is Istanbul. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print

WhatsApp ‘concerned' services to be blocked after Iran calls to delete app
WhatsApp does not 'provide bulk information to any government', according to a spokesperson. PHOTO ILLUSTRATION: PIXABAY WhatsApp 'concerned' services to be blocked after Iran calls to delete app WASHINGTON - WhatsApp said it was 'concerned' that its services would be blocked in Iran after a state broadcaster urged the public to delete the messaging app, saying it was sharing data with arch-rival Israel. State television IRIB appealed to Iranians on June 17 to delete WhatsApp from their phones, alleging that the app collected users' personal data and 'last known locations and communications', and shared them with Israel. On June 18, Israel and Iran exchanged fire for the sixth straight day, with Israel saying it struck a nuclear site near Tehran. A WhatsApp spokesperson dismissed the IRIB claims, saying all messages sent on the app were 'end-to-end encrypted', with only the sender and recipient able to access them. 'We're concerned these false reports will be an excuse for our services to be blocked at a time when people need them the most,' the spokesperson told AFP. 'We do not track your precise location, we don't keep logs of who everyone is messaging and we do not track the personal messages people are sending one another.' WhatsApp also does not 'provide bulk information to any government'. Israel launched a massive bombing campaign against Iran on June 13 that has hit nuclear and military facilities, as well as residential areas. Iran has responded by launching missiles and drones, and early June 18 said it had fired hypersonic missiles at Israel. Tehran announced on June 13 that it was placing temporary restrictions on the internet for the duration of the conflict. Numerous sites and apps have since been at least partially inaccessible. The authorities appealed to the public on June 17 to 'minimise their use of equipment connected to the internet and to take appropriate precautions' online. For their own safety, civil servants and their security teams have been banned from using any connected devices, including smartphones, watches and laptops during the Israeli air offensive. In the wake of nationwide protests triggered by the 2022 death in custody of Ms Mahsa Amini, Iranian authorities had blocked several apps and online services, including WhatsApp. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Wall Street futures steady ahead of Fed's interest rate verdict
June 18 (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures edged higher on Wednesday ahead of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision, while the Israel-Iran conflict entered its sixth day, with new missile strikes launched from both sides. A Federal Reserve monetary policy decision is due at 02:00 p.m. ET where policymakers are widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged at the 4.25%-4.5% range. Investors will focus on Fed Chair Jerome Powell's comments to gauge how he plans to combat the risk of rising prices, which remain a dominant concern for the central bank. The central bank is expected to balance the risk of slowing growth and higher inflation. "A lot has happened since their last meeting in early May ... given that uncertainty and the potential for fresh inflationary spikes, they're widely expected to keep rates on hold again," Jim Reid, global head of macro and thematic research at Deutsche Bank, said in a note. Money market moves show traders are pricing in about 46 basis points of rate cuts by the end of 2025, with a 56% chance of a 25-bps rate cut in September, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool. With conflict escalating in the oil-rich Middle East, markets have been on edge over the possibility of a more direct U.S. military involvement in the Israel-Iran aerial war. A source familiar with internal discussions said U.S. President Donald Trump and his team were considering a number of options, which included joining Israel in strikes against Iranian nuclear sites.
