Over 6,000 bribery cases recorded since 2015
KUALA LUMPUR: From 2015 to June 30 this year, a total of 6,585 cases involving the acceptance and giving of bribes were recorded, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Of that total, 4,896 cases involved receiving of bribes, while 1,689 involved the giving of bribes. She said the data was based on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which opens investigation papers based on information and complaints received, carrying out its duties under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. "Of the cases involving the acceptance of bribes, 2,965 involved public servants, followed by 1,101 private sector employees, 119 government-linked company (GLC) workers, 680 members of the public, and 31 politicians. "For cases involving the giving of bribes, 47 involved public servants, followed by 511 private sector employees, 64 GLC workers, 1,061 members of the public, and six politicians," she said in a parliamentary written reply. Azalina was responding to Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut), who inquired about statistics of bribe givers and recipients by race, age, and field of career over the past 10 years. By race, Malays accounted for 3,690 cases of receiving bribes, followed by Chinese (494), Indians (263), and other ethnic groups (449). For cases involving the giving of bribes, Malays accounted for 390 cases, followed by Chinese (630), Indians (151), and others (518). Regarding age categories for cases involving the acceptance of bribes, 2,603 were aged 40 years and below; 2,097 were aged 41 to 60; and 196 were aged 61 and above. For cases involving the giving of bribes, 981 were aged 40 years and below; 622 were aged 41 to 60; and 86 were aged 61 and above.

Petronas Ownership Remains Under Federal Govt, Steps Taken To Enhance Participation Of States -- Azalina KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- The ownership of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) remains with the federal government, although steps were taken to enhance the participation of states through strategic collaboration platforms, joint project implementation, and involvement in the value chain, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Azalina said the federal government's approach is aligned with an inclusive federal structure and ensures sustained benefits for all parties. The minister said that the federal government is currently the sole owner of Petronas, which is incorporated under the Companies Act 1965 as the national oil and gas company. 'The Petroleum Development Act 1974 (Act 144) entrusts Petronas with ownership of petroleum, along with the exclusive rights, powers, freedoms, and privileges to explore, manage, and develop the country's petroleum resources, whether onshore, offshore, or in Malaysian waters,' she said in a response posted on the Parliament's website today. Azalina was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), who asked whether the government could consider distributing 50 per cent shares in Petronas to oil- and gas-producing territories and states, namely Sarawak, Sabah, Terengganu, and Kelantan. According to Jeffrey, the distribution is a fundamental step to strengthen the Malaysian Federation moving forward, while easing politicisation and dissatisfaction over oil and gas rights. Azalina said that although the ownership of Petronas is under the federal government, the current approach allows producing states to receive direct benefits from the petroleum industry through cash payments and various forms of commercial cooperation. KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that a proposal to separate the roles of Attorney General and Public Prosecutor will be presented to the Cabinet by the end of August. This move is part of the MADANI Government's legal reform agenda, implemented within two and a half years in office. 'This separation has long been demanded, and the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) will table it to the Cabinet at the end of this month,' Anwar said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat. He was responding to a question from Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) regarding outdated laws under review and their implementation timeline. Anwar noted that the government has introduced 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments. Key reforms include amendments to the Evidence of Child Witness Act and the enactment of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023. Other significant changes include the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023 and the Ombudsman Bill 2025. 'I must emphasise that this record over two and a half years has yet to be matched by any previous administration,' Anwar said. The Prime Minister highlighted that five new acts were introduced and 34 amended in 2023. In 2024, another five new acts were enacted and 57 amended. This year, four new acts have been passed, with six amended and two new bills introduced. On anti-party-hopping laws, Anwar stated he supports strengthening the current legislation. He recalled proposing stricter anti-defection laws as Opposition Leader, which were not included in the Federal Constitution (Amendment) (No. 3) Act 2022.
