Tharoor may succeed Dhankar as next V-P
Dubai: Shashi Tharoor as the next Vice-President of India? If so, does it mean a final parting for Tharoor and the party he currently represents, the Indian National Congress? If the buzz on Indian social media channels – and talk within the country's political circles – are anything to go by, Tharoor stands a good chance to be elevated to the role of 'second citizen'. The speculation comes as the incumbent VP of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar surprised all by announcing late last night (July 21) that he's stepping down from the role. A new candidate must be elected within the next 60 days, according to the rules, according to The Gulf News report. Tharoor's name is reportedly high on the list of possible names to replace Dhankhar, with a decision expected soon. Now, even before Dhankar made the surprise move – he's stepping down because of health issues – Tharoor had been mooted as a possible 'future' VP of the country. Now that future is likely to happen a lot sooner, if all the speculation is based on facts. Tharoor is currently a Member of Parliament from the Thiruvananthapuram constituency in Kerala, having won a narrow victory in the 2024 elections. But what he has been doing in recent weeks is what's fueling the fevered speculation about Tharoor as the next VP pick. Tharoor has been one of the more vocal proponents of India's stance on 'Operation Sindoor' in trips to the US and elsewhere. And that's brought him visibly closer to the BJP government - and sharing quite the rapport with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Three more names are doing the rounds. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The JDU leader's name is doing the rounds as reportedly, the BJP is looking to name one of its own as Bihar's chief ministerial candidate ahead of the state polls. Union Health Minister and BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda. A BJP veteran, he is known to be close to PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. JDU MP and Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh . As per the rules of the Constitution, Singh took over the duties of Rajya Sabha chairman (VP) starting today (July 22). He shares cordial relations with both Nitish Kumar and PM Modi, making him a prime contender.

Not Nitish Kumar, THIS leader is likely to be the next Vice President of India, he is Modi government's top choice too, his name is... After Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation was accepted, there has been a lot of buzz about who will be the next Vice President. Several names are being talked about among BJP leaders. At the moment, Arif Mohammad Khan, who is the Governor of Bihar, seems to be the top choice for the role. People believe that once Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his visits to the UK and Maldives, a final decision about the new Vice President may be made. In political circles, some other names are also being discussed for the position, one of them is Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Rajnath Singh not interested? Even when Jagdeep Dhankhar became Vice President last time, Rajnath Singh's name was being discussed. But Rajnath, who has already served twice as BJP's national president and has been handling important roles like Home Minister and now Defence Minister for the past 11 years in the Modi government, had clearly shown no interest in the post even then. JP Nadda unlikely to be chosen Some people are now also talking about BJP national president JP Nadda for the role. They are pointing out that his term as party president is ending soon. However, many senior leaders are strongly denying this possibility. They say that Nadda is already managing two big ministries in the government i.e. Health, and Chemicals & Fertilizers, along with being the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha. So, there is little chance that he will be removed from these key roles to be made Vice President. Low chances for Nitish Kumar Some voices are also asking for Bihar's Nitish Kumar to be made the next Vice President, but this seems highly unlikely. Arif Mohammad Khan seen as the top choice Arif Mohammad Khan is being seen as the most suitable candidate because of his long political experience and his ideological alignment with the BJP and the Sangh Parivar. Though he had been away from active politics for a long time, the Modi government appointed him as Governor of Kerala, and later, Governor of Bihar. Back in the 1980s, he had resigned from Rajiv Gandhi's Cabinet after strongly opposing the law that overturned the Supreme Court's verdict in the Shah Bano case. He has always stood firmly against religious extremism and appeasement politics. More recently, he has openly supported key decisions of the Modi government, like the triple talaq law and changes to the Waqf Act, defending them with strong arguments. Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned on Tuesday evening, citing health concerns. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar said he was stepping down to focus on his health and follow medical advice. While the decision may seem sudden, there have been several recent occasions where he appeared unwell during public events — even though he seemed active and energetic while presiding over Rajya Sabha sessions. "The people of Mahua only want me to contest from here. They are saying that if anyone else from the RJD is fielded here, they will not vote for him. If the party (RJD) gives me a ticket, I will contest for the RJD. If it doesn't, I will contest as an Independent candidate, but will fight from Mahua only. "It is a platform through which people can connect with me. People can get associated with Team Tej Pratap Yadav through social media and share their issues with me. So, I can help resolve them".Tej Pratap, Lalu Yadav's elder son, also claimed that Nitish Kumar will not be the Chief Minister after the polls and some young leader will rise to saw during the BPSC students protest when the protesters demanding justice were caned. This indicates that Nitish Kumar will lose his position and some young leader will rise to the throne," Tej Pratap this year, thousands of students seeking the cancellation of the 70th Integrated Combined Competitive (Preliminary) Examination (CCE), 2024, conducted by the BPSC over allegations of question paper leak, were caned, sparking widespread outrage against the Nitish Kumar government for its handling of the being asked whether he expected his younger brother, Tejashwi Yadav, who has been the state's deputy chief minister previously, to rise to the top post this time, Tej Pratap said that he would be happy to see that happen. However, he opined that it will be difficult as long as Tejashwi is surrounded by "traitors"."Tejashwi is surrounded by Jaichands (a historical figure infamous for his treachery). He will become the chief minister only if such people allow that to happen," he 243-member Legislative Assembly of Bihar will go to elections later this year, either in October or November. The key contest is between the NDA, comprising Nitish Kumar's JDU, the BJP and Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas) and others, and the Mahagathbandhan of the RJD, Congress and Left parties.- EndsWith inputs by AniketTrending Reel IN THIS STORY#Bihar#Tej Pratap Yadav#Rashtriya Janata Dal
