31 years after attack in which RSS worker — now Kerala BJP vice president — lost both legs, 8 CPM workers surrender
The RSS worker, who lost both his legs in the attack on January 25, 1994, is now BJP state vice-president Sadanadan Master, who was also made a Rajya Sabha member last month. Sadanandan, a retired school teacher, was serving as the RSS saha karyavah in Kannur district when he was attacked at his hometown of Mattannur.
The accused CPI(M) workers surrendered before the sessions court in Thalassery after their appeal against the conviction was rejected by the High Court early this year. They had been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and will be moved to the Kannur Central Prison.
After a trial court in Kannur convicted and sentenced them in 1997, the accused moved the High Court, which in January this year upheld the conviction. The High Court had said the accused do not deserve 'any sort of leniency in the light of the overt acts committed by them'.
'The incident did not happen in a fit of rage/anger or on a sudden provocation. The attack seems to have been premeditated,' the High Court had said in the order upholding their conviction. The court also enhanced the compensation amount, with each of them being asked to pay Rs 50,000 each.
Later, the accused moved the Supreme Court, which declined to admit the plea. Subsequently, the High Court cancelled their bail and told them to surrender before the trial court not later than August 4.
There were 12 accused in the case, but the trial court had convicted only eight, as the charge of conspiracy against the four others could not be proved. This was one of the few cases pertaining to political violence in Kannur in which police had slapped various sections of the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) 1987. Later, the charges under TADA were dropped.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) leaders arranged a farewell for the accused persons before they left for the court to surrender.

Derogatory remarks against Amit Shah: Rahul Gandhi to appear before Jharkhand court on August 6
RANCHI: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, will appear before the MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa on Wednesday, in a defamation case registered against him for an alleged objectionable remark against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2018. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Ranchi on Monday to attend the last rites of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren. After paying his respects in Soren's native village, Nemra, Gandhi returned to Ranchi and will proceed to Chaibasa on Tuesday to appear before the MP-MLA Court as directed by the Jharkhand High Court on June 10. The High Court had earlier dismissed Gandhi's plea challenging a non-bailable warrant issued by the Chaibasa court, which had ordered his personal appearance by June 26. Gandhi's counsel had sought an exemption under Section 205 of the CrPC, but the court rejected the request, insisting on his physical presence. Following this, Gandhi approached the High Court, where his lawyer argued that scheduling conflicts prevented an earlier appearance. After consultations, August 6 was agreed upon as a suitable date for the hearing. The legal trouble stems from a 2018 speech during an AICC plenary session in New Delhi, where Gandhi allegedly referred to BJP leaders as "murderers" and "liars." He had stated, 'The people of this country will never accept a lying BJP leadership drunk with power… They will accept a man accused of murder as BJP President, but the same won't be tolerated in Congress.' A BJP worker, Pratap Kumar, filed a complaint in Chaibasa's Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in July 2018, prompting the court to take cognizance in February 2022. Summons were issued to Gandhi, followed by a bailable warrant after he failed to appear. With his continued absence, a non-bailable warrant was eventually issued in May 2025. The case highlights the ongoing political tensions as Gandhi faces judicial proceedings over his remarks.

Rs 2,528 crore project: Cabinet approves 104-km freight corridor connecting Vadhavan Port with Mumbai-Nagpur E-way
The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval for the construction of a 104.8-kilometre high-speed freight corridor connecting the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar district with Bharvir in Nashik district, linking it to the Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway, officially named the Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. The corridor, proposed as a strategic infrastructure link under the state's rapid logistics expansion plan, is expected to save nearly 79 km in travel distance and reduce commute time between the port and the expressway from 4–5 hours to just 1–1.5 hours. The project will be developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The Cabinet has approved a total outlay of Rs 2,528.90 crore, including a Rs 1,500 crore loan from HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation). The corridor is to be completed within three years. Currently, cargo from Vadhavan must travel via the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway, covering around 183.48 km to reach the Samruddhi corridor via Bharvir–Amne. With the new expressway, the distance will be reduced to 104.898 km, saving 78.582 km, officials said. The proposed expressway will pass through Dahanu, Vikramgad, Jawhar and Mokhada in Palghar district, and Trimbakeshwar and Igatpuri in Nashik district, offering a direct, fast-moving logistics link between the state's western coast and central and eastern Maharashtra. The Vadhavan Transshipment Port, being developed under the Sagarmala initiative by Vadhavan Port Project Ltd, is expected to serve as a major international cargo hub. To complement this, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently constructing a 32-km highway from the port to Tawa on National Highway 48, which will integrate into the larger freight corridor. At present, heavy cargo vehicles must take a longer detour from Bharvir–Amne to reach the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway, resulting in additional travel of nearly 82 km. The new corridor is expected to eliminate this inefficiency, enhancing fuel savings and turnaround times for goods transport. Officials said the corridor is being planned with future traffic volumes in mind. With anticipated high-volume freight movement from Vadhavan Port, particularly toward Vidarbha, Marathwada, and North Maharashtra, the expressway will play a vital role in decongesting existing routes and facilitating regional economic development. 'The expressway will benefit a wide range of stakeholders — from large and medium-scale industries to agricultural processing units, educational institutions, and IT parks in Palghar and Nashik. It will also help improve market access and generate local employment,' an MSRDC official said. The Cabinet meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is overseeing major infrastructure and connectivity initiatives in the state. Officials noted that the new corridor will function as a key logistics backbone, enabling affordable, fast, and efficient cargo transport from India's western maritime gateway to its heartland.
