
World Oral Health Day 2025: Haleon, FDI Lead Effort to Improve Oral Health in Morocco
Rabat – Morocco's oral health challenges stood at the heart of a major event that marked World Oral Health Day 2025.
Haleon, a global leader in consumer healthcare, partnered with the FDI World Dental Federation and the Moroccan Association of Oro-Dental Prevention to bring together over 200 dental professionals, industry experts, and key stakeholders yesterday at the Hyatt Regency Casablanca.
The event's goal is to promote awareness, encourage prevention, and improve access to care under the slogan 'Happy Mouth, Happy Mind.'
Oral health demands serious attention, particularly in Morocco, where it remains a pressing concern.
Tooth sensitivity affects more than half of Moroccan adults, and nearly one in five people over 15 suffer from severe periodontal disease. Despite these statistics, many go without treatment, unaware of the risks that poor oral hygiene poses to overall well-being.
Nawab Rabi, a representative of both the Moroccan Association of Oro-Dental Prevention and the African Regional Organization of the FDI World Dental Federation, described the urgency of the problem.
'With 36% of Moroccans aged five and older experiencing untreated dental caries, our collaboration with Haleon is dedicated to enhancing preventive strategies, promoting oral health literacy, and increasing access to professional care, underscoring the essential connection between oral hygiene and overall well-being,' Rabi said.
For Yasser Abdelmoneim, Head of Expert, North Africa at Haleon, dental practitioners play an important part in addressing such oral health complications.
'As experts, our role goes beyond treatment. We must educate, empower, and endorse dentists. Too many patients delay care, unaware of the consequences of untreated oral health issues,' Abdelmoneim stated.
He added that Haleon is 'committed to providing dental professionals with the latest research, technology, and clinical insights through different touch points being face to face or digital interactions.'
Meanwhile, Asif Alavi, Haleon's Manager of North Africa, called for stronger efforts to prevent oral diseases before they take hold.
'Oral diseases are largely preventable, yet they continue to impose a heavy burden on individuals and healthcare systems,' he lamented.
Alavi reiterated Haleon's commitment to 'supporting dental professionals in
Morocco through initiatives like the Haleon Health Partner portal, which provides access to clinical research, webinars, and tools that enhance health literacy.'
'By working alongside partners like FDI and the Moroccan Association of Oro-Dental Prevention, we aim to strengthen preventive measures, improve accessibility, and drive oral health education across the country, he added.'
Haleon leads a variety of programs to help improve oral health in Morocco. Its most recommended product against tooth sensitivity, Sensodyne, is at the center of training programs and partnerships with industry leaders to deliver better care.
The company also plans to engage every Moroccan dentist by 2026 and disseminate their knowledge, expertise, and resources to facilitate greater care for their patients.
At the event, attendees had the chance to experience a VR simulation designed to enhance oral professional training. The interactive session provided valuable insights into effective oral care and demonstrated Haleon's commitment to innovation.
By working with FDI and Moroccan dental associations, Haleon seeks to raise awareness and improve access to care. Prevention and education are top priorities in the company's line of vision, as they look to make more Moroccans have healthier smiles and improved overall quality of life. Earlier this year, hospitals and medical centers across Morocco faced a critical shortage of blood supplies, raising serious concerns among health professionals. The shortage was attributed to a significant drop in the number of blood donors, as reported by various transfusion centers. These centers have since issued urgent appeals to citizens, urging them to step up and help address the crisis by donating blood to save lives. Under normal conditions, the regional blood reserve should be sufficient to meet demand for five to six days. However, the available stock had fallen to levels that could only cover three days of needs. In response, the Moroccan Agency for Blood and Its Derivatives renewed its call for public mobilization, encouraging citizens to visit the nearest blood transfusion center and contribute to safeguarding the national healthcare system. Controversy in Huelva : Moroccan seasonal workers face deportation and rights violations
Two recent cases in Huelva, Spain, have sparked strong criticism over the working conditions of seasonal Moroccan female workers, who form the backbone of the region's strawberry-picking industry. The first case involves the deportation of a 47-year-old worker diagnosed with cervical cancer, while others, including a woman five months pregnant, were left without contracts or legal documentation for weeks. One worker was diagnosed with advanced cancer while in Spain and, despite receiving treatment at Huelva Hospital, was not allowed to continue her care before being deported to Morocco, according to the Association of Migrant Women. Meanwhile, the Strawberry Producers Association claims the worker requested to return home after being informed that her treatment was futile, though human rights activists emphasize she had access to free medical care and medication. In the second case, a group of workers brought to an agricultural company in the Cartaya area in April were left without signed contracts, pay slips, or legal residency documents. They remained without actual work for over a month, violating the GECCO program's requirement that 85% of scheduled hours must be guaranteed. Among them was a woman five months pregnant, left without income, documentation, or medical coverage. Thanks to the intervention of the CCOO union, the company eventually signed contracts and issued pay and documents, enabling the workers to return to Morocco legally. The union also demanded that the workers be rehired by another company next season to prevent any retaliation. This year, around 17,000 Moroccan women are participating in Huelva's berry-picking season, out of approximately 40,000 seasonal workers brought in through the GECCO system, which is seen as a model for organized legal migration. However, the CCOO warns that cases like these risk tarnishing the reputation of the entire sector, stating, «These violations harm committed producers and threaten the image of the entire industry».

Addressing Morocco's medical brain drain : Driss El Yazami advocates global dialogue
Driss El Yazami, president of the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), called for «an active international policy» to strengthen dialogue with global organizations and attract medical expertise, both national and foreign, to address Morocco's healthcare worker shortage. Speaking at a study day organized by the Istiqlalian group on the migration of Moroccan medical professionals, he stressed the importance of a «territorial policy involving regions and communities». The event gathered Minister of Higher Education Azzedine El Midaoui, former Health Ministers Houcine El Ouardi and Abdelouahed El Fassi, medical faculty deans, doctors, and members of the second Chamber. El Yazami advocated for «openness to foreign talents» and promoting the «Moroccan dream» as a means to strengthen ties between Moroccans worldwide and their homeland. He highlighted that physician mobility is a global phenomenon, not unique to Morocco, urging avoidance of "alarmist approaches" in favor of proactive national and international strategies. Migration, he said, «is neither a crime nor a scourge but a fundamental right and a reflection of deep social changes in Moroccan society». El Yazami noted that migration reasons extend beyond economics to include personal fulfillment, emphasizing the crucial role of Moroccan talents abroad in shaping the debate. The CCME insists that citizens abroad should be «fully integrated into discussions about Morocco's future, especially regarding health, education, and public policy».
